Very true, but with what limited ability they have, I'd rather see them do something that actually means something.

Messing around with the Lords isn't going to change anything. I'm still not sure what problem there is that needs fixing. It essentially has no power other than to delay anyway.

Nobody wants to win this election.

Sunak spunked the next 4 generations' tax receipts up the wall during COVID and has enough sense to realise that it can't be clawed back without drastic cuts to public spending. Nobody should want to be in charge for the next decade trying to fix that.

And this French one is tipped up by profitable businesses. In short, your instinct to say the state can not run or oversee private investment is nor borne out by reality. And when run at arms length from government it can be sustainable and highly effective.

Hereditary peers, 2nd largest 2nd chamber in the world, stuffed with cronies, appointed for life terms, no representation of smaller parties. There should be at least some specialists in there to scrutinize legislation in their field.

It's about time we relocated parliament, I believe they're still planning to spend 15-20bn refurbishing it. If anyone thought things through they could have done HS2 properly and built a new government campus around old oak common or elsewhere on the line.

I do think he has called the election as a get out clause. He doesn't want to do it anymore and doesn't want to quit or be kicked out by the party.
He's suddenly found himself in a position where doing what he's always done isn't working.

It's a pretty cowardly route to take.

HS2 is pointless, or at least, not a priority given what we need and where we are.

Yes connectivity is important, it's called the internet.
No-one really needs to get around like they used to.
We still have a rail network, that can just be run better.
Do I need to get to Birmingham or Manchester 20-40mins quicker. No. As long as the train has a solid internet connection...I can count all the time as productive minutes. Or time to switch off.

They need to look at people and workplace behaviours as it's not trending towards city centers connected by trains.
(and this will be more stark by the time the effing thing gets finished)

Now I can get behind more freight on the train network to get wagons off the roads.

It should have been built in the 80s, like France and Japan. But with autonomous vehicles, the age of hub transport is now ending. Everything in the future will be door-to-door.
