Set Pieces

Once again today our free-kick option was awful, I was amazed after having 2 touches first, we actually got a shot away.

And the short corner routine is appalling. Thankfully we are still scoring goals in other ways. Just imagine how many goals we could score though with better fk/corner routines

After watching a few great free kick scored from on MotD I am wondering why it is we never seem to score any direct free kicks. Bale used to be a specialist but doesn't seem to take them any more leaving it to Kaboul to hit the wall or VdV to blast over. For all his faults at least Bentley used to deliver some good set-pieces.

Ever since Bale' scored a couple of headers from corners he has become a marked man and we don't seem to have any other effective routines.

OptaJoe: 13% - The percentage of goals in the Premier League scored from corners. Planned.

Fairly sure our % is below average, perhaps signing Samba might help:

OptaJoe: 25% - Blackburn Rovers have scored the highest percentage of goals from corners in the Premier League this season. Asset.

Kaboul needs to be banned from taking free kicks for life. Once again, we send the big bodies forward i.e. Kaboul and King and every corner is a short corner. Were not as bad at defending set pieces as we used to be, doesn't say much though.

aim for kaboul! he should be able to score a few (did it against city at whl). our corners have been tinkle poor all season

Goals from corners

I know this is an old chestnut, but heard on the City game that they have now scored 12 goals from corners this season. This compares to our 3 or maybe 4. Could this be the difference at the end of the season from us winning the league? United also opened the scoring yesterday from a corner. in a tight game this factor becomes even more important. We really need to sort this out. With Ade, Saha, Bale, Dawson, King, Kaboul etc our heading ability should not be in question. Why is it we are sooooo poor at corners? Thoughts please#-o

For starters i think our deliveries from set pieces is very poor. Strange when we have the quality players we do. Ade has'nt scored or even threatened with a header iirc altough he has done so in his other clubs. Saha has very good jumping and heading ability so maybe he will.

Bae has actually been quite good at taking corners.. but for some reason it's usually Modric/Vdv and it just hits the first man...

This makes me sad...

i don't understand how a professional footballer cannot deliver a decent cross from a dead ball situation

Whenever we get a corner at the lane, I turn to my mates and shake my head

Could be such a weapon too, with Bale and Lennon capable of forcing a dozen per game

Ade threatened once yesterday - modric corner.

I think Modric is our best corner taker - it aint sayin much tho.

I created a thread ont he old board about this - they are truly horrible are our set pieces and just scoring six or seven a season is crucial it wins you points in tight games.

Man bricky beat both Wigan and Villa with set pieces.

Has anyone realised that we always take outswinging corners. VDV takes them from the left whilst modric takes them from the right. They are far slower and much easier to deal with than inswinging corners.

Our opponents are much more likely to score from our corners, through a counter attack, than we are to score from them! I was saying to a mate yesterday that, when an opponent has the ball in their defensive third and is under pressure from our players, they may as well just hoof the ball right out for a corner. They must know that we won't score from them, we know that we won't score too.

I think its simply down to us not practicing set pieces. A classic sign that we dont practice set pieces was yesterday when we had that free kick on the edge of their box in the middle. We had about 5 or 6 guys standing around it for 30 seconds looking clueless at each other before Benny had a smash. If we actually practiced set pieces, we would know what options A, B and C were for each position

It similar for corners, we never seem to look as if we have a plan so it usually ends up with Modders or VdV crossing and the CBs trying to make something of it

I think at times for corners we may have a plan but if the taker cannot get it past the first man then the plan is foiled. All I ask for is for the taker to put in a good ball. Thats all I am asking for. Miss the first fudgein man and give us a chance to score.

I undertand about the 'missing the first man' thing and I do agree. The one reason I have to explain why people often hit the first man is simply that with defences being pretty well drilled nowadays, you need a top class ball in to the box...and therefore it might be that corner takers go for broke by looking to really whip it in at pace and with a lot of pace. Therefore by going for the perfect ball, they take a lot more risk and hence it doesnt come off a lot

I like Rafa but he makes sure he takes every corner and free kick. They are generally brick.
Bale should be taking corners. The problem with Modric's corners is he doesn't get enough pace on them. Imagine how Bale can whip them in perfectly.

The thing is Bale is a threat so by letting him take the corners it would mean we have one less threat in the box

I would agree as by whipping them in you have less control of the ball but we even float them in and theyre still brick. I think we should ask the FA to give us throw ins instead of corners.
