Set Pieces

harry has said he favours fresh and happy players. not sure if its the players who don't think these drills are necessary.

I do wonder if we expect too much of our set pieces and that we over estimate the number scored by other teams from set pieces

Corners - I would expect us, with the quality we have, to get the ball past the first man. It is criminal when we dont. I also expect us to atleast make it a contest - make their defence work a bit harder.

Free kicks - Direct Free Kicks - theyre kinda pathetic. I dont expect us to hit the target 9 times out of 10 but just once out of 10 would suffice for me.

What I don't understand is why VDV continually takes them when he is so terrible at it.

Its in his contract I bet.

You know at school there was always a kid who wanted to take every set piece every corner every free kick? VDV is that kid.

I prefer Modric's corners to everyone else's and should take them over VDV

IIRC I think Bale has scored 2 headers from Modric corners (Wigan away,Bolton home) plus the same move set up the 3rd goal V Bolton for Defoe

This! Our corners very really beat the first man. I can not remember the last goal that came directly from a corner which wasn't a Bale near post header. It looks likes teams are aware of this now and a defending this threat as well

To be fair plenty of teams dont clear the first man and lots of other teams dont score from them that often either. Theres only a handful of players who are deadly from set pieces in the league (Larsson, Van Persie, Cabeye) are probably the main ones really. Maybe Ryan Taylor as well but how many others actually score more than 1 or 2 season from them.

The thing is, as it is something that can definitely be worked on - its an advantage we have passed up for ourselves.

Its the sort of attribute that can separate wins from draws...

to be honest, I think we would be better off taking a scrum than a free kick, and a line out, rather than a corner.

Failing that, instead of giving it to our celoebrated free kick specialists (who are so feckin pants its beyond reason) - why dont we get either Kaboul/Dawson or Friedel to simply leather the ball as hard as they can at the goal

all this clever brick, up and over the wall is a waste of time and effort
How many direct free-kicks are scored from shots powered towards goal rather than caressed over the wall or bent round? Not that many. But, in saying that, we are awful at both! It has to be a matter of the 'work' done in training. Van der Vaart and Bale were rather good at free-kicks before they came to Spurs (or they were meant to be), yet their abilities since coming here have quite obviously diminished. It's quite shameful to be honest - we don't seem to have any sort of strategy with regards to corners either. More a case of 'get it in the box and see who's near the ball' which doesn't really work at the top level. Most good teams from set-pieces have a few players running across the ball with some desire to meet it with their head - we don't really apart from Kaboul or Bale.

It all boils down to work done in training, IMO. If you put the effort in then you'll reap the rewards just like any other walk of life.

poor delivery. on top of that no one attacks the ball. no more free kicks for Kaboul.

Baffled we didnt show any interest in Beckham this last month, unlike last year. If nothing else he could have at least shown our muppets how to take a friggin free kick and how to stick a corner on someones head. Its shameful our tinkle poor attempts this season.

Our set pieces today were a joke. We tried the short corners and didnt work. We actually didnt have that many forward, I guess thats partly Man brickys tactics - keeping two or three upfront.

I think the last two games showed that set pieces are fairly crucial in deciding tight games.

Anyways
