As someone who's lost an elderly relative through this most unusual time, am I entitled to say "go fudge yourself"?

I guess it depends on why you feel like you're being held hostage. If you've got a business to run that's been severely affected and there's not the support in place I can understand why compassion might go out the window if you have a family that are dependent on that income supply.

However if you're just missing the golf course in addition to your fav restaurant and the elderly (they're almost dead anyway right?!?!) are preventing you from enjoying your youthful years, kindly sit on it and swivel.
So sorry to hear that. Terrible blow.

For the more and more vocal group who say that this is mostly old people who would have died in the next couple of years anyway, your lack of compassion being on display is what it is but there is a huge unknown of the impact on society from a behavioral perspective of such a large loss to so many people in such a short time. You have no idea what you are wishing for. Nobody does.

As it stands I will be losing my job shortly unless we get an end date - the aviation industry is going to be decimated

Like it or not - when more and more people start to lose jobs the tide of goodwill will change.

Supermarkets have stopped recruiting - because they are full of desperate people needing to put money before health -

Not sure how you expect others to empathise when you omit to offer a single word of condolence to Spurspinter.

There are the long term effects of people staying at home all the time, many not working, to consider as well.

It is a terrible dilemma. There are huge risks in even going partially back to normal. There is little doubt that many more thousands would die from all generations as a result, not just the elderly.

I'm really sorry to hear this mate. Hope you and your family are doing ok.

That's sad news. Hope you and your family can find some solace. It is difficult enough at the best of times.

@ everyone, thanks for kind words. As GL mentions there's never a good time but it's hard for the family to not be able to properly get to together properly.

Hmm so I think we are at the point when I can kindly tell you to sit on it and swivel haha.

What you do have to take in mind is that I work in a very idealistic dreamland equivalent of society, I'm pretty sure that once life resumes there's going to be an aviation industry and it will get back up and running again. Like everything it'll just take time and the lives of our elders and those with pre-existing health conditions are worth waiting this out a little longer before banging on about being held hostage bud. I know you'll probably say you're using the term metaphorically but to me it seems like you're making it out to be very difficult and that human lives are not worth the difficulty.

There aren't many industries out there (if any?) that aren't taking a hit directly or as a knock on effect. It's a cliche but food over your head and a roof in your belly (that's right isn't it? ;) ) is the main thing and people consider the huge pretend numbers on some computer screen are more important than human life then it's a big worry.

And re supermarkets - You might have missed the huge recruitment drive for them?

It is a very difficult situation. Some will face losing homes for example. I don’t think we can pass judgment for one person expressing their reality. All positions are valid really.

I think there is a way to gradually return with fit people getting things moving, while they keep away from those who are older. It’s not a perfect solution, but what else can be done?
