I hate that argument as well, always gets thrown at England also.
I deliberately avoided looking at this thread after the match last night as I just could not face the anger and vitriol that I felt myself being replicated many times over. I have read through all 33 pages this morning before making what I hope is a more considered post.
Looking back to the end of last season we all knew that the team needed strengthening for a Champions League campaign and hoped that money would be made available this time. Some of you have mentioned the £70M spend on players in the Summer but in net terms due to the sales of Mason, Chadli, Fazio, Pritchard, Yedlin + Bentaleb and N'Jie on loan, in reality it is far less than that. And have we really strengthened?
Yes, Wanyama is a useful addition to the squad but this has lead to Dier being moved out of his favoured position. Janssen is showing some promise but doesn't really look like the back up to Kane we really needed, while N'Koudou just doesn't look ready yet and is no better than N'Jie. Is Sissoko really an upgrade on Mason, and who has replaced the goals scored by Chadli. In my view, with the exception of Wanyama, the summer signings are at best back ups to the squad and by selling the existing back ups have weakened the squad in both numbers and quality..
Another factor this year is that the back-ups that have remained at the club, such as Trippier, Davies and Wimmer have not played as well as last year and now look poor replacements for Walker, Rose and Vertonghen. This plus the drop in form of Eriksen, Alli and Dier have all effected the pressing style of play used last year. When we add in injuries to the A* star players of last year; Alderweireld, Kane, Lamela, Dembele and Alli this has lead to constant rotation throughout the season, changes in formation and consequently disjointed performances.
So what have we learned for the future:
1. We still have a good 14-15 players for a good starting 11 and bench if all are fit.
2. The back up players are not as good as we thought they were (i.e. Trippier, Davies, Wimmer, Onomah(?)
3. The scouting of new players and negotiations needs some improvement to avoid another Sissoko type purchase
4. Wembley seems to be an issue for the players. Do we really have to play all our league games there next year?
5. There is a feeling that some of the players ( I would suggest Dier, Alli, Eriksen, maybe Dembele) seem to think they have made it and are not playing with the same intensity as last year.
6. Harry Winks definitely looks like one for the future, but the performances of the U21 and youth teams so far this year suggest that with exception of Edwards, there are not many others likely to come through. Should we be going back to more loaning out of players to gain experience, as Walker, Rose were previously?
However, if any or all of the above were changed, there is still no excuse for resting your main players for a 'must win' Champions League game, which suggests that Poch also needs to take a hard look at his rotation policy. If Verts really was left out last night so that he can play left back against the Chavs then the rotation policy just can't be right!

We have spunked 47 million on the likes of Janssen and Sissoko. Says it all really. Neither player are anywhere near good enough. The signing of the latter looks partiularly dodgy to me. Any brown paper bags involved?

I believe so to, Wanyana aside, it was beyond bad. Especially for a team who finnish 3rd in the PL.

Nah, loss of form, but above all injuries and tired bodies. *But above all that the lack of quality backups. Dele is still a sprog and need down time.
I personally think there are more injuries and niggles being carried than we are aware of. Then * above.

Hopefully as others have suggested it was a misreading of what he was saying, in that we have to SHOW more quality.
I guess until somebody posts the actual interview being referred to it's hard to know for sure...i for one hope it was him saying the players needed to show more quality..

Poch must be regretting that buy now,the lateness of it all, the number of games he's played plus his three match suspension,Poch would have 30 mill burning in his back pocket now for January,he could have gone out and bought two quality proven seasonal internationals with that money. Levy thought the nightmares of crap buying and the thoughts of tinkling the Bale money up the wall was over.

The decision does contain some valid logic though. If Toby is not going to be fit Dier/Wimmer will get some game time together and it also protects Verts from getting injured as be honest if Rose Davies and Verts were not available who would you play left back?
I know its the 1 game at a time mantra BUT Poch definately doesn't work that way when it comes to selection.
(Verts got a bit rinsed in the 1st leg at Wembley anyway, so no guarantees he would have have made that much difference)
We haven't been at all good enough over the 5 games and that is just how it goes sometimes. We didn't deserve to qualify in any aspect whatsoever and to a degree, last seasons work has been undone. It is upto the players to now go and repair that damage and earn the support we have given them over the last couple of seasons since the 2013-14 debacle.

So with the logic of Poch, why am i paying the full admission for a Spurs game. Surely if he is only going to field 8/11ths of the best team then punters should only pay 8/11ths of the ticket price. Spurs cant have it both ways, last night, for me, was robbing the fans; plain and simple. I wonder whether we should enter the cup competitions from now on as we dont take any of them seriously. We should have a 'cup' team and a 'league' team. At least everyone would know where they stood.

1. Poch's mandate from Levy is to prioritise re-qualification for the champs league rather perform when actually in it.
2. Wembley is going to be tough in the league next year (top 10 will be a good effort) and I fear some players simply wont fancy playing there and might even fancy champs league football elsewhere if we don't qualify. The players will already be feeling like a cog in the profitibility wheel, and some might actually want to succeed and progress in the CL.

Nope.
We still need to avoid defeat at Wembley yet. Not been easy that one.
Then we need to progress in a comp where even at peak with all our main players fit we've only made the quarters and nothing I see now suggests to me that Poch will be putting out the best players this time around.
Just reminiscing about that quarter final v Dortmund. They've kicked on haven't they!
