Mauricio Pochettino - Sacked

Squad is very good and like Poch's direction, but I'd kill for a VDV in that team ...

Very interesting point that you raise there! VdV was one of my real favourite players because of the passion that he showed and the fact that he always seemed to score when we needed a goal. I always used to joke that he would come off after 60 minutes!

Would I kill for a VdV type player in our team. Bloody hell yes, but that is because I have a soft spot for those types of players. Flawed Geniuses. That player that could play for any club in the world were it not for the fact that they had one fatal flaw, no matter what that may be. VdV was one of those, Ginola another.

Maybe, just maybe that's not the right road to take just yet and that's where we were going wrong, so I'm inclined to agree with @SpursNorway 's way of thinking. But GHod would I love to see a VdV or Ginola type at our club. Someone where when they get the ball, you just know he could do something amazing.

Personality

Erisken says little and format get over exuberant on or off the pitch. He lacks glamour but is a better player IMO

Agree with this. Van der Vaart was an excellent player for us, but his exuberance and passion contributed as much to his popularity as the goals and assists did.

Eriksen is a quieter player but scores key goals, is the best free kick taker since Bale and at present, is our best attacking midfielder. Plus, his stamina is greater and so he gets more minutes and miles in for us than VDV did.

Eriksen not only gets more minutes from his stamina. His stamina, and discipline, also means that he can play in a wide role. VdV never mastered a wide role for us and if he was here now there would be exactly one place for him in the team (#10 role). Eriksen is more versatile and allows us more tactical freedom and also allows us another creative player on the pitch.

Poch accommodated Lallana at Soton, who was an overweight/60 minute-only flair player.

One thing about VDV was he scored the important goals e.g. First goal or last goal in a one goal win!!! Erisken does that the same and that's so vital to teams where fine margins are in place

Winning mentality. vdV had that in oodles, whereas Eriksen still goes missing in the big games (and lots of others too).

Rafa was on a completely different stratosphere as a player.

Let's see when Eriksen's career is wrapped up...

Seems strange to me to talk about a winning mentality with VdV. He won a couple of of league titles and a cup with Ajax - most Ajax players do that it seems. Outside Holland he won the Intertoto cup with HSV twice and a Spanish super cup with Real Madrid. That's not a particularly "winning" record for a player with a winning mentality in a different stratosphere to Eriksen. Nor is it a particularly winning record for someone with his obvious talent.

To me VdV had a lot more personality than mentality. Was a great character and a very good footballer. But Eriksen to me seems a much better professional.

VdV was a bigger name who brought excitement to the club and was much more talismatic (is that even a word?) on the pitch - in terms of ability and quantifiable contributions though it's probably close between the two

If we do really well this season, wonder if any big clubs will come in for Pochettino. Looking at Argentina's current problems, won't be surprised if Pochettino is linked with becoming the next Argentina manager.

VDV was a great piece of the jigsaw when we played our most exciting football but was only on piece and was a bit part player really due to injuries and fitness over 90 minutes

Eriksen impacts the games to a similar scale but over 90 minutes and was significantly younger and higher rate when signed (like for like age wise)

He has also won similar trophies with 3 league trophies at Ajax and a few cups

As I said earlier VDV played the sexy football but Eriksen is the creator in what is probably our most efficient football

VDV displayed his personality on the pitch whereas Eriksen is ice cold and displays little to no emotion at any time

Not sure that a lot of 'big' clubs would suit Poch's way of working. I think plenty of chairmen would be interested in employing him, but you'd have to think he might be tempted to see it through; particularly with the new stadium on the horizon and the amount of work and effort he has invested into the squad. I understand that people will point to him jumping ship at Soton, but we are a far more competitive club than them with a load more potential.

There are surely only a handful of clubs that would raise his interest?
