World Cup Final - Germany vs Argentina

I think the 7-1 was a bit of a freak result and I don't think anyone is saying it was just German brilliance. However, German also put four past Portugal and in the last world cup, with many of the same players, four past England and Argentina. The Brasilian panic after the second goal led to three extra quick goals, so perhaps we discount those, but that still leaves a fully deserved 4-1.

Not that I expect Germany to put four past Argentina, but we should give them their due.

No doubt that this Germany team is capable of scoring 4 in the final. A different question is if they're likely to.

Hope Argentina will get revenge for the 1990 WC Final loss. Argentina had a poor team then but Maradona took them almost single handedly to the Final. Unfortunately for them, their only decent striker Caniggia were suspended for the Final and had 2 players harshly red carded in the Final. Even worse, Germany were awarded a dubious penalty 5 mins from time. This time, Argentina have a much better team and are virtually at full strength. And unlike the old West Germany, Germany are still struggling to have a winning formula yet. Argentina and Messi will only have themselves to blame if they don't win it this time.

Argentina for me, the likes of shaqiri, Hazard and Robben couldnt score against them in 5 1/2 hours of KO play, thats some top class defending, you'll need a moment of magic to win this game, Argentina have that man messi of course and this is where die deutsche badly miss Reus

Missing the game tonight to go see Neil Young live. Going to switch my phone off and record it for when I get home

I think that the German defence is better and I think that the Germans are set up better as a team.

What is this view based on considering in this tournament and this year Argentina have kept more conceded less goals?

Almost cliché, but if Messi sucks in the Germans, creating space for others, or make the difference himself, the Argies can win! I would like them to win it, despite picking Germany out the hat in the office Sweepstake. If I was a betting man, I think I'd put my money on Germany though. They are an effective team unit, and I'm not sure Messi and Argentina can disrupt the machine.

On 8 July 1990 West Germany beat Argentina in the World Cup final. Earlier that day Olaf Ludwig won a stage in the TdF. As I'm writing this German rider Tony Martin wins today's stage. It is written in the stars.

The German defence looks better with Lahm at full back. He was in midfield when the defence was looking more dodgy.

I think that every team that Argentina have faced so far have changed their tactics to try and shackle Messi, which has meant that they have not had many teams get at them. Germany started the tournament with Khedira fighting for fitness and Schweinsteiger missed the first game with an injury. I think that Germany have grown as the tournament has progressed as a result of these two gaining fitness and because they have adjusted their tactics to get the best out of the players they have.

I'm looking forward to the final. I don't really mind which team wins, I just want a good game.

Agreed, a good game is what I want to see most. On balance, I'd prefer a German win, based on the previous performances and that they are primarily a team, but if Argentina play well and/or Messi has a iconic performance I'd be happy to watch that too.

A classic final for the ages would be the finish to make this a very memorable World Cup. A special performance from Messi is possibly the thing that could make it the best ever.

same here, I'd quite enjoy Messi having a blinder and shutting all the naysayers up though

I'd love to see him having a career defining game. He is right up there with the greats but for me, but I do not think that he can surpass Maradona or Pele until he completely dominates an important World Cup game. If he does that tonight then I will be the first to applaud.

Yeah but once these coincidences are revealed, they tend to backfire :) you've jinxed the Germans now hahaha

I hope I'm wrong but I can see an Argentina win here...

1) Argentina, even though it looks otherwise, have a good defence
2) They will be extra motivated to win it in their rivals backyard, plus may feel they are representing South America against a European juggernaught (if Germany win that will be a hat-trick of UEFA Countries winning the world cup)
3) Germans, despite all the good football they've played over the recent years, have recently been serial chokers (both internationally and, well see the champions league final of that season...)
4) When all is said and done, Germany do not have many recognised strikers. Argentina do. Often in cup finals, that can make all the difference.

Like I say, I hope I'm wrong, but I can see a 3-1 win to the Argies
