Andros Townsend

Re: Official - Townsend

Am I allowed to say " I'm off to spank the monkey " ?.

Maybe my **** will take offense and report me to the Scum for being racist. Oh and obviously a ****er to boot.

Re: Official - Townsend

The joke, as far as I can remember, goes something like this.

NASA send a monkey and an astronaut into space.

Each is given a list of tasks to do.

MONKEY
Check booster separation.
Fire retro rockets a T+ 22.05 into the mission.
Check correct orbit is achieved and adjust if needed.
Perform scientific tests.
Relay telemetry data to mission control.
Prepare for re-entry.

ASTRONAUT
Feed the monkey.

If this is indeed the joke Hodgson told, I defy anyone to find anything remotely racist about it.

Can somebody clarify if my interpretation of the joke is correct?

That the Monkey was given all maner of complicated tasks, most of which you'd expect to have been given to the astronaut, whilst the astronaut is only gievn the taks to feed said monkey. Thereby making the astronaut nothing more than a glorified waiter on the trip?

have I got that right?

Re: Official - Townsend

because the player is obviously an idiot or just wasn't listening properly, the sun must get all manner of cranks calling them every day saying they find this or that objectionable, should they report each case?

Cranks calling the Sun and they being contacted by a likely well-known football professional is not the same thing; I think the crux of this thing is what was the joke: that everybody in the team needed to do nothing more complicated than giving the ball to Townsend?

Re: Official - Townsend

Yep , specifically aimed at Smalling to keep passing the ball to Townsend . It was granted a round about the houses way of getting the point over but that is all he meant by it.

Mountains and mole hills and all that jazz.

Re: Official - Townsend

its not even a mole hill, its a perfectly flat piece of terrain with absolutely no resources to form any kind of vertical protrusion

Re: Official - Townsend

It does indeed seem not much of an issue, though a bit round the houses as fingers say. However, unless the Sun are making it up SOMEBODY was offended by it.
I wonder who reported it to the Sun?

Re: Official - Townsend

The Sun have achieved exactly what they wanted to with this story. They have no reputation to speak of so this was just about publicity

Re: Official - Townsend

most likely culprit for me would be Wheelchair, simply because he is one of them and therefore the biggest cnut in the dressing room, he also has a team mate with the most to gain from a rift forming between Hodgson and Townsend

Your right fella.

Unfortunately the player decided to mole hill up that lovely piece of flat terrain by getting his agent to blab to the press and thus has caused a mountain to take shape.

Re: Official - Townsend

Typical.

Just when an England manager achieves a degree of success, along come the gutter press to try an destroy his accomplishments.

The way they hounded Sven was one of the reasons I stopped buying newspapers, and still havent done so since

Re: Official - Townsend

Interesting question AS; As a black person myself I feel i would reserve the right to feel offended.

However, I have sort of given Hodgson the benefit of the doubt here as he doesn't come across as that kind of person to be so silly as to know that might be offensive but then still go ahead with the joke anyhow.
I also don't think this would have come out if say, Harry, had made the joke, so the political motive of the news being released has also perhaps clouded my reaction (which has been a little bit 'meh' it's the Sun...)

I do wonder if it had been the Guardian, Independent, Telegraph or other 'more serious' paper had reported it whether I would have had a more negative reaction to the news...perhaps I'm a snob deep down8-[

It'd be interesting to hear what KD, Naija and others think on this...

its not really about whether or not roy is racist in saying that. i dont think he is , though in his generation 'casual racist slurs' were probably in abundance...

no the issue i have is that people here have issue with someone finding it offensive. i'm wondering if anyone having a go at the dude for finding it offensive is afro carribean or of black ethnicity. because even though i doubt i would be offended i fully would expect someone out there to be offended or left feeling uneasy about the thing

you are allowed to call your parts whatever you want. but the second you say you are off to spank the monkey and you point to a black dude then you are in landmine territory and some people will take offense and some wont , its just the way the pulse is these days...and its mainly a socia demographic thing IMO more than the whole 500 years of slavery line people like to throw out

its a sensitive issue for sure

As far as I'm concerned people can be offended by whatever they want to be offended by. But people don't have a right to use the fact that they got offended as an automatic reason why others should behave differently.

I know with racism it's a very touchy subject, but at some point the problem is not with the person that said something and rather with the person that took offense. Not saying that this is necessarily the case here, just to be clear.

Re: Official - Townsend

Personally I do not find the joke racist but as much as I do not like the Sun I do not blame them for this furore the story has caused. If a player was offended by his manager and told the Sun then it is a good story for them. My issue is with the player who was offended and leaked it to the Sun. While the player has the right to say he was offended he should have the balls to call out with his manager before going to the press. I bet if he had Roy would have apologised profusely and explained that was not his intent. To go straight to the Sun seems wrong to me. Heck what do I know, I am a Yid and I sing what I want

I think the more interesting thing is who provided the leak? Was HE offended? At the very least, he must have known it would stir up a **** storm? Why would someone do this? Beats me.

I'm pretty sure it's someone who doesn't get much football under this manager - it's political. Nobody is that stupid/sensitive to take actual offence.
