If English players aren't good enough do you want us to play them anyway? I don't quite understand the 'only one is a Londoner', you can be a Londoner without being English. You can also be Spurs through and through without being English.



On the more realistic side, we have quite a large English contingent and i can't see that changing during the summer. Dawson, Walker, Rose, Townsend, Defoe, Carroll, Lennon, Caulker, Parker. We might sell one or two, maybe loan one, but our English contingent is going strongly.

In terms of work ethic and the absence of off-field antics, foreign players seem to be head and shoulders above their British counterparts. Until that changes: until young lads aren't pictured stumbling out of Faces or a casino or something every week, until older English professionals don't post pictures of themselves lying face-down in a pile full of cash on twitter, and until our English youngsters are able to compete technically with the foreign players the league brings in...I'm not sure we should be playing English or British players on the basis of their nationality.

I have high hopes for Carroll, Pritchard, Coulthirst and a few other young 'uns. They seem a decent, level-headed bunch and possess good technical skills to boot. Hopefully they're part of the younger generation that reverses this trend, and finally utterly and comprehensively eliminates this stench around English football caused by the previous generation of Rio, Lampard, Stevie Me et al. The Golden Generation, hah.

To be fair, I think its a bit harsh to include Lampard in that to an extent - I think he's an example of someone who made the most of what he had, realised his limitations and worked hard to maximise and improve his game. The fact that he's probably had a superior career to Gerrard, when I happen to think that Gerrard has twice the natural talent of him just kind of emphasises your point.

England players just can't keep possession of the ball. Watching the national team and the U21s at the moment is embarrassing. It's like the 70s or early 90s all over again.

Carroll, Pritchard and Coulthirst are a different bred, and I'm very excited about them.

But there's very little in the homegrown market that should be of any interest to us. Will Hughes at Derby is perhaps the only exception.

Tottenham are set to appoint former England assistant manager Franco Baldini as technical director.

The Italian, 52, left his post at Roma on Wednesday and will take charge of Spurs' scouting and transfer policy.

Manager Andre Villas-Boas is understood to be keen on a continental management structure at White Hart Lane.

Baldini knows the Premier League well having spent four years as Fabio Capello's right-hand man during his time with the England national team.

He has spent the past two seasons with Roma, but is now clear to join Spurs having negotiated an amicable departure from the Serie A club on Wednesday.

Baldini, who had originally been linked with a move to Spurs late last year, said: "I want to thank AS Roma's ownership for the opportunity to work together. I have enjoyed my time in Rome and wish the best to the club, the players and fans."

Speaking last month about the role of technical director, Villas-Boas said: "It's something that I am used to working with.

"Since the first day I told the club that it's somebody who is extremely important in my view to the structure of the club."

Who cares if he can or not, AVB will be his translator. And as long as he brings over sexy signings... I'm sure he is at least conversational.

Just a concern cos generally football people without a good grasp of English don't do well here.

Pochettino is doing ok at Southampton so far. Baldini isn't managing the team anyway. The coach AVB has perfect English, better than most of us! That's more important and I'm sure Baldini will need to speak with Levy and AVB regularly, I'm sure he'll be fine.

Football clubs are nothing without their local community and it's a symptom of modern football that players don't care so much about the clubs they play in. Football has lost that sense of community and even the fans are out of touch with what football clubs are REALLY about. Or maybe it's just a sign of the times and that younger generations will never understand as they never grew up with it. Sad for them really.

Oh and you can't be a Londoner without being English. You can't be a Londoner if you're born and raised in Buckinghamshire, let alone from another country! What an absurd thing to say. A Londoner isn't a state of mind, it's a birth right. I could move to Liverpool tomorrow with my kids and they'd never be Scousers if they lived there the rest of their lives.
