while Moyes is another straight talking jock who can motivate and get a team performing above their individual level. Get off on the right foot and he has the potential to be another long term appointment.

I think if Mourinho wanted to he would stay at United for 5-10 years easily. It's the kind of job you would take seriously, and the opportunity to take over from Fergie and establish a new legacy is something appealing. If he left United where else would he go? And what would be the point? Try his luck in Germany? Italy again? Madrid have always been a bit of a circus club so it's not really surprising Mourinho will leave, but if he goes to United I can see him staying a while.

Moyes hasn't got the experience working with a big budget, so how could the United board trust him with theirs? I'm sure Moyes is rated by Fergie and maybe after Mourinho, Moyes would be perfect.

How about this - Mourinho to United, Ancellotti to Madrid, Moyes to PSG (to prove he can work with the budget), Martinez to Everton, some bright young coach to Wigan.

Hmm thinking about it more, Fergie staying on as Director, providing advice and guidance to the board on Moyes' choices could mean it's likely to be Moyes and not Jose.

But then again, it kind of undermines Moyes' authority if the squad knows everything still gets run past Fergie. How can Moyes implement his own ideas or instill his own brand of discipline if the players know that he needs to be watched over for the first couple of years?

Jobs for the Jocks, especially if SAF is upstairs so Moyes can have a whisper in his shell as and when.

I understand what Brain of Levy says about Mourinho, but the man can just not operate without a sideshow, sh*t storm, clusterf*ck going on every 6 months......a kind of football tourettes if you like

Very sad to see him finally retire, it was always going to happen sooner rather than later but I certainly thought he was going to try and get to 30 years in charge which would have put him at 74/75. Probably the greatest manager in world football, not just British football. To have created probably 4/5 exceptionally strong sides that have managed to win honours both home and abroad is exceptional. To add into that the way he managed to completely overhaul United's youth system and bring all the players we have seen through is really just testament to his legacy.

I can see for longevity purposes why they would plump for Moyes but for me it has to be Mourinho this time. With his record and persona, he is really the only manager equipped to go in and have the same aura and authority with the players especially with Sir Alex still at the club albeit in a director/ambassador capacity. His friendship with Ferguson would also make the transition a smoother one to my mind. This appointment will be so difficult for the person taking it, having to follow on from Ferguson is a real thankless task and to me, Mourinho is the only candidate that can tick all the boxes at this point that Man Utd require in terms of presence and virtually being as close as you can to guaranteeing success.

I have to believe also on Mourinho that the fact that he was so 'un-Mourinho' like after Madrid won there this season that he was maybe showing the United decision makers that he could calm down and be respectful when it matters.

Maybe Fergie had told him he is in the running and just needs to show that he can comply with United's image.

The perfect gesture and at 90 mins all managers have to hold out their wrist and look like a bulldog chewing a wasp.

It will be great to see Utd fans have to go through the same managerial uncertainty and turmoil that all other clubs have had to go through these last 25 years. They have had the comfort zone all this time. Welcome to the circus !
