A slight tragic irony is that as soon as we get started with vaccination program the virus has tried to stay one step ahead with a much greater transmissible variant.

Is tier 5 (ie schools shut) much different to first lockdown, rule wise? Peoples behaviour attitude might be different to back in March though?

i think schools will be closed, and yes will be much similar to March of last year.
The question of restaurants open for takeout and things is up in the air. For example, independent's were still running back in April but i know that McDonalds and chains etc were closed, will be interesting to see if Govt mandates that.
Would recommend the Tweet i posted above, as the evidence after 2 weeks of Tier 4 is numbers are not reducing yet. So inevitable we're moving to stronger lockdown.

Well home schooling this morning has been a joy so far
Our eldest literally cannot be bothered to do anything so is being as awkward as possible with everything she can

Just found out Zoo's are open under Tier 4. Brilliant. We can't even lockdown properly.

If Hanrooster is 'extremely worried' about the new South African variant why aren't we closing the borders?
If there are two new highly contagious strains in circulation then why are schools reopening?
If we are definitely going to need to take stronger longer measures (as both Hanrooster and Johnson have said this morning) then why are we hesitating?
It's a replay of what happened first time around. They haven't learnt a thing.

A point on this btw, as a lot has been made about "stopping flights from SA" which is pointless because you can just fly via Dubai easily. We've done that route over to SA and back a couple of times. There's just no direct flights at the moment is all. Couple that with the fact people are flying to Heathrow with very little checks or tracking, just another brick show.

France launched its vaccination programme last Monday using the Pfizer jab. But after the first few days of the campaign, only several hundred had received the first dose.
President Macron is reportedly furious, criticising the pace as like a "family stroll".
So far the strategy has focused on administering vaccines in care homes, which face logistical problems in storing the Pfizer jab, and time-consuming processes of consent.
Vaccine scepticism runs high in France, with one poll suggesting only 40% of people planned to get a coronavirus jab.

It would be laughable if not so serious.
Yesterday he was saying he was reconciled to introducing stricter measures. Repeated the same today but said they first are waiting to see the impact of Tier 4 restrictions on infection rates. But if he is already reconciled to stricter measures, he must already know enough about the infection rates/trajectories to have come to that conclusion, so why delay the implementation?
I think we will now see an announcement later this week, rather than in the next few weeks he spoke about yesterday.
BBC News earlier highlighted a twitter thread from Jeremy Hunt, where he calls for stricter measures immediately - closing schools, closing borders, banning all household mixing.
I couldn't bear him when it was SoS for Health, but in his role of Chair of the Health Select Committee he seems (imo) to speak a lot of sense.

Agree as Health Sec didn't like him at all, then again don't think many did. But as Health Chair he speaks absolute sense and is tinkling off members of his own party in the process because he's pointing out their flaws. Absolutely speaking sense, especially ban on air travel.
The fudging cheek of the unions still astounds me (although I'm not sure why it still does).
