Coronavirus

Really? You think there should be a national lockdown even when some of the country doesn't have the rates to justify it?

I think most if not all of London, South East and east of England should go into a tier 5 (as I laid out) and then see where we are in 10-12 days.

What do you think will happen to stop a contagious virus continuing to spread across the country while people continue to mix and schools return?

It’s the same mistake as in the Spring - wait until it’s deeply embedded everywhere before taking the necessary action, meaning the eventual lockdown has to be longer and many more lives are lost.

the numbers are crazy again, I think another national lockdown is inevitable to help the NHS get back on top of things

I'm sure the government will play politics for another fortnight though before suddenly declaring it necessary

we need to do something to scare people straight, I'm in a tier 4 area and people just aren't taking it seriously
We already have a 75% lockdown - I'm not there is much benefit to adding the other 25% unless based on local numbers?

The next review (wed?) will be schools staying closed and announcing the London nightingale open as a publicity stunt and as a lever to back up Tier 5.
It was clear from Marr this morning that Tier 5 will happen.
I wonder what it will look like. Harder enforcement on mass gatherings maybe?

I'm in tier 4, fat face is closed and some people are wearing masks, other than that, and the school being shut, it's no different to last January

There are only about three fat Face stores still around aren't there?!

I'm in tier 4 too in one of the highest transmission areas (Greenwich).
What are you seeing in your area that needs to change with a tier5 system?
Do we move to the system Italy had where you have to show why you are out?

Short of harder penalties for things like too large gatherings and not wearing masks, I'm not sure what we can do pre vaccine.
As much as I hate to agree with Scara, I don't think the kind of restrictions Australia and NZ had are feasible. :/

I don't know, but something needs to change, social distancing has been forgotten, a lot of people have given up on masks, there were 4/5 large parties going on in ear shot of my garden on Dec 31st. Cases here have been steadily rising for a while now.

Sounds like the, inevitable, compliance fatigue.
I do think the next few weeks will be messaging to get that back on track - tier5 and nightingales.

Personally I'd like to see more graphic news coverage - show people what is actually at stake.
Sadly the 70% transmission rate has probably led to complacency as there is now an such a high chance of getting it.

About 5 of the kids who work at my store all had parties and were out mixing. In Brighton this morning the were hundreds walking around.

I chatted with one lady from a distance and she said she had driven down from Crawley because she wanted a walk along the front.

The shops are only open for click and collect and pubs and restaurants shut but apart from that it is life as normal.

Reread my post and then come back to me.

the pubs/restaurants near me are doing take away food, which is obviously fine, good on them for making it work, there is definitely some pint pulling going on for regulars/mates though

Sorry mate but the UK isn't even 50% on a scale of lockdowns. From what I saw in Madrid, London and Melbourne I'd say if Madrid was 90%, Melbourne was 80% and London (back in March) was 50%. I won't bore you with the differences but as an example, in Spain you had one person per vehicle allowed for trips to supermarket and emergencies, in Melbourne we had to stay in a 5km distance from home, except for essential trips. The UK screwed this up a long time ago by going half arsed in its measures to counter the spread.

75% being 75% of the population in tier 4.
As far as the contents and enforcement of the measures yes we are pathetic - please do go in to detail, that's what I'm interested in!
Enforcement seems to be the gapping hole for me.
Madrid had one person per car and supermarket - how was that enforced?
I know the supermarkets near me are saying only one person and I'd say it's a 70/30 split of solo/couples shopping.

Madrid enforcement seemed to be the shared responsibility of the police and army. We got pulled over near the airport and it was a roadblock with armed police. Large fines apparently of several thousand euros for failure to comply. We only got off because of the UK plates and my clear non understanding of the situation which my partner was able to explain in Spanish. The Spanish population seemed very willing to accept these harsh regulations. No doubt some on here will mouth off about being an overly obedient population isn't British etc but you've only got to look at how things are now in countries where the science has been followed.

Melbourne's rules were strong enough but I think most importantly, they were clear. Mandatory mask wearing in public, household visitor limits etc were consistently updated through daily briefings at the same time every day which most people found easy to follow. There was annoyance but as we saw it working I think people accepted it, up until the very end when the numbers were so low you could sense the good will elastic band was about to break. Then suddenly one morning in October, pubs were opened, households could up to ten visitors, 5km rule became 20km rule etc etc.

As Boris said though, "we're a freedom loving country". Not quite sure what that means compared to other countries maybe the Aussies hate freedom.

As I said before have a lot of friends in Aus and it boils my tinkle watching them out and about having fun whilst we're onnverge of another lockdown and can't do anything. All so avoidable and our economy is taking a battering BECAUSE of the actions of the government, not despite it.

I have 2 siblings in academia. One happens to be clinically vulnerable and is relieved at the closure as it means she doesn't catch a potentially deadly disease. The other is leadership and I can assure you setting up remote learning and keeping open for key worker and vulnerable kids is a lot more work than opening as normal. This is driven by concerns of safety for the majority. The unions are doing their job I guess but the teachers do not deserve criticism here.
Those who downloaded the "I'm too bone idle to do my fudging job or even come up with my own excuse" template letter do.

You all hate that dirty feeling but you get there in the end ;)

530,000 AZ doses to be administered this week - and 22 million vulnerable people need to be vaccinated according to Hanrooster on Radio 4 this morning.

A return to normality by Easter looks unlikely, even if delivery is eventually ramped up to 2 million per week.

the virus cannot be eradicated, it can be managed far better however. And we're failing the very basics at doing that. Hence why we're probably entering another period of national school closures and effectively full scale lockdown. Terrible, terrible management. But when you have clowns in charge, what do you expect? Still, at least we got Brexit done eh.

As mentioned few pages previously, the Govt now needs to throw EVERYTHING it has, including the military, in running 24/7 vaccinations. It's their last play now, every day we waste is 1000s of potential vaccinations lost and another wasted effort and moving towards normality.
