Coronavirus

I would ask yourself the question, if your wifes self isolating due to potential Covid you should too

Don't disagree. Seems a bit nonsenical your wife could be asymptomatic as could you, but you could still have and spread coronavirus. But the rules are (again, not 100% sure as it's not obvious from what my friends sent over), his wife has to self-isolate, he does not, unless she starts displaying symptoms, then the whole household does.

Work that one out.

What is irritating is we ar 9 months along the road of the virus so far. You think the science/medical/data community would have got a handle on 1. the percentage of asymptomatic cases 2. the contagiousness of asymptomatic cases in comparison to someone with full on symptoms. Hence being able to develop a strategy that make sense. (and communicate the why's and reasons)

The madness of the system means the husband wouldn’t have to isolate as he is the contact of a contact.

And so the spread goes on...

I thought the rule of thumb has always been, if someone is being asked to isolate you all isolate unless they are children and you dont have to?

I'm not blind to the problem there is with covid and care homes, but I hope this has been well thought through.
Not only are people likely to be on low pay now potentially having their working hours cut, so where is the support for them, but it could have a huge impact on the ability of care homes to operate, or to operate at existing occupancy levels. Meaning the sick elderly having to stay in hospital longer as there are fewer care home beds available, thereby fewer beds available in hospitals for others, covid and non-covid alike.
The devil is in the detail of course.
Luckily we have a government good at focusing on detail. Oh, wait...

I agree mate totally.

There needs to be a plan, I would love to see them supported financially with a hardship allowance.

There needs to be a plan is 23pc of all cases are in carehomes which is equal first but high with deaths. Regardless of my belief of letting the rest of society crack on the first step starts with working out how you protect the vulnerable better. By rights that plan should have been solidified in the first lockdown.

Nope. The wife is the contact, so the husband is the contact of a contact - therefore no need to isolate. If the wife starts to display symptoms then he should isolate (having spent a few days sharing the virus around first).

It’s an issue we have come up against a few times in school over the first half of term. One example: we have a staff member whose son attends our school. He was in close contact with someone in his year who tested positive. He was sent home. We contacted PHE who said she could continue to teach. Her husband is a dentist - he continued to practise.

Our system is set up to encourage the virus to spread, hence the reason a vaccine is the only possible way out.

Per my understanding this is 100% the rules. Had other people (funnily enough also in the teaching profession) confirmed the same.

Under the rules, my friend doesn't need to self isolate whilst his wife does. And he's back in work in London 4 days a week.

Alas just looked and you are right, it says dont come into contact with those you live with where possible, thats nuts.

Surely if asked to isolate you isolate the house?

The whole essence of track and trace is to get ahead of the virus.

In the first instance when person A catches it you are behind the virus. The speed at which you test and obtain a result for person A, trace and contact person B,C,D,E.....for example, and test and obtain a result for B,C,D,E....all vital to get from backward looking to ahead of the game.

I dont think it would be that difficult to analyse each of those elements and model it out as to predict that if certain timeframes arent being met we are quite simply 'wasting our time'

Oh another thing i heard on a podcast on COVID (maybe it's what they're addressing now with Tier 2 funding), but basically as you get nothing for Tier 2, but funding comes in at Tier 3, Councils are relunctant to go to Tier 2. They either would rather stick in Tier 1, keep things open, or go to Tier 3 and get funding.

Like i said i think Rishi is resolving Tier 2 funding today or maybe just did, but means the last few weeks also explain why some councils finding Tier 2 a bit of no mans land.

Edit: When i say councils get nothing for Tier 2, don't take that literally as the value of £0.00. I don't have the specific value, what i'm saying here is it's very different to Tier 3 compensations.

So, has anyone actually been asked to test or isolate? Thought i'd share a chat with some friends on what they've faced as we discussed on whatsapp yday:

1) Friends daughter was unwell, so they got a test. Had to pull their other daughter out of school too. Test results due back within 2 days. After 5 days of not hearing anything (he's continually following up daily) he's told the test is inconclusive. So, come back for another test. For the interest of everyone he's kept both daughters at home for the last week (still 1 week to go but that's half term) but obviously, not even sure they have COVID.

2) Other friends wife got a ping last night via the COIVD app that she needs to isolate, so this means she has checked in somewhere and there's probably been a COVID alert for the location. However, and we may be wrong here as we were disucssing last night and it's not clear, i think my friends wife has to isolate for 14 days, but my friend doesn't? Again it's not clear cut which is causing some confusion, but think he only needs to also isolate (as does the household) if she shows symptoms.

Anyway, would be interested to see if anyone else actually been impacted via test and trace thus far or testing?
We've been self-isolating for the last week. My wife was tagged as being in close contact with a case in her school and she got tested as a priority near the end of last week. She came back negative but my 15 year old son was diagnosed positive just a couple of days back. We got him checked as a precaution as he had been showing symptoms over the weekend, so it was not a total surprise I guess. My heart dropped when I heard it though as you can imagine. He's a bit sick, coughs, fatigue and headaches but mostly toughing through it. I think he's over the worst of it. Obviously, we had been living in close quarters with him so when his positive result came back we organised a test for us all again. We should see the results today or tomorrow. I have a feeling I may have it as I have some of the symptoms my son had. I don't feel too bad though I'm sure I have something, either covid or the flu.

The test and trace had been working fairly well (in Ireland) by all accounts until last weekend when it got overloaded with cases. The new lockdown is partly in response to this I assume. So it was left up to us do our own track and trace which is far from ideal. The state-run track and trace was anonymous, whereas this is not.

Sorry to hear and wish you and the family a quick recovery. Any idea where your son got it from? Assume school?

Thanks for that.

Yes, I would guess his school is the most likely place but it could have come from anywhere - one of my other kids, in the shop - who can tell really. We've been erring on the side of caution all along so it is just a matter of luck.

We are heading back towards full furlough I think.

I wouldn’t be shocked if this was announced soon

Its tax relief rather than then giving you the cash right?
Correct.

Its the standard 'using your home (or part of) as an office' rate. £6 a week allowance that doesn't get questioned or argued by HMRC....you can work it out as percentages of everything (and probably claiming more) but with the possibility of getting into a dispute.
