Coronavirus

So, my wife and son head up to our cottage - 300km north of Toronto - to see how the dear old cabin has survived the savage Canadian winter. (Quite well, thankfully)

We have a decent library of books in there (all the Flashman books, stacks of the sexy Photo magazines from France in the 80s-90s) and her ladyship says "Can I bring you back a book or two to read while we're in isolation mode?"

I reply: "An Elmore Leonard book (charming, humorous crime capers) or something science fiction". (thinking she'd bring back some of the brilliant, imaginative short story anthologies from Omni Magazine).

She brings back Leonard's Out of Sight which features the hero being locked up in the trunk of a car with an attractive police detective (played in the move by George Clooney and Jennifer Lopez). Don't really need to read about being locked up even if it is with a sexy-arsed babe.

And the hardly uplifting Day Of The Triffids.

I know. Hardly suffering. But it's all about expectation and delivery.

More gin, please.

So our new policy is test, track and trace. Isn’t that what South Korea, Germany and others did from the start, saving themselves 30,000 odd deaths in the process?

And for those who are particularly interested in the economy, South Korea’s stock market up 31% in the last week and quick recovery well underway. All achieved without a mandatory lockdown or the government pumping billions into the economy.

Amazing what foresight, quick action and good governance can achieve.

On the plus side, we’re all still washing our hands.

I’m sure that’s the Ryanair flight I took back from Belfast in January. If you look closely you can just see the top of my head in 33A.

To hear this yesterday was weird, good in a way, but you wished you were hearing a re-run of a briefing that happened a month ago. Better late than never.

You OK mate?
Yeah I’m fine just lost my sense of smell and have a slight cough ... it’s nothing compared to when I had pneumonia in Feb

It’s Because I’m covering a government critical project I’ve basically been told I have to have a test - I think it’s about setting the right example for the team so that people do get tested

also I may have to get on a military plane for a meeting so they want to be sure

I did find out yesterday that Deloitte have written the procedures for the test centre set up and it’s over 100 pages....
I guarantee it will be over complex... very pretty.... and be as much use as a wet fart

if people want to know what’s caused so many problems in these situations it’s the inability of the government being able to engage with experts across the issues

it’s all been laughed to consultancies who really really don’t m ow what their doing other than knowing how to present it in a manner that makes people think they do

It is always one of the big 4. There is nothing they will claim they cannot do, there isn't that much that they won't make up as they go along.

There are a lot more than 4 I can assure you

as I said previous I know the company working on the ventilator piece... very nice guys, very welcoming and accommodating. Lively offices too

Wouldn’t touch them with a barge pole for a real rapid procurement exercise

Anyone else feeling a bit sorry for Hanrooster? It seems like he is running the whole Covid operation. Testing, PPE, ventilators and hospital capacity. Wouldn't it have made sense to put a Minister in charge of each area? Give testing to one dedicated Minister. Likewise procurement of PPE and other essential supplies. To be fair to Hanrooster or maybe just the NHS, the one thing we seem to have done very well at is expanding hospital capacity and critical care.

And experience of previous epidemics.

Never make the guardian or the BBC that though will it.

I imagine the other ministers are running for the hills.

Those papers are the problem
They don’t allow the government to make brave but useful decisions for fear or ridicule or worse
So it’s the same people doing the same things quite averagely for a premium
If we had less people trying to dig up mud and let things happen it would be better overall
