The youth players/on-loan thread 2014-2015

The most hyped player is Josh Onomah in our youth set up. Still only 17 he regularly stands out at under 21 level and if he can continue his development, he will be the one to watch out of them all. Azzoui is very up and down.

But yeah inside the youth set up onomah is the main man and he could even be in the first team squad next year - he has that much talent

Tottenham v Chelsea FA Youth Cup semi-final will showcase Spurs' golden generation

Tottenham manager Maurico Pochettino believes young stars at White Hart Lane point to exciting future for the club

Mauricio Pochettino plans to be at White Hart Lane on Thursday night to watch Tottenham Hotspur take on Chelsea in the cup again.

The head coach will not be locked away in an office studying a re-run of the Capital One Cup final, however. He will be in the stands to watch the first leg of an FA Youth Cup semi-final as Spurs attempt to knock out holders Chelsea and reach the final for the first time since 1995.

The competition, in which Spurs have already eliminated Manchester United, is not the only reason why Pochettino remained upbeat in the aftermath of losing at Wembley.

As well as plotting how the first-team will immediately recover from the Chelsea clash against Swansea City on Wednesday night, Pochettino spent his 43rd birthday in a meeting with head of academy John McDermott after the club’s Under-21 team had beaten Everton 4-0 on Monday afternoon with all four goals scored in the opening 33 minutes.

The result meant Tottenham’s Under-21 team moved level on points with Manchester United, who had started the day at the top of the table, and underlined why those inside White Hart Lane are convinced the Wembley defeat to Chelsea was the beginning, rather than the end, of a journey.

Tottenham started with four home-grown players, Harry Kane, Nabil Bentaleb, Ryan Mason and Andros Townsend, in a side with an average age of just 23 against Jose Mourinho’s men.

It says a lot that having come from the talent factory of Southampton, Pochettino has claimed that Tottenham have the best academy in England and possibly Europe.

The next four the club hope will eventually make their mark on the first team are Harry Winks, Joshua Onomah, Cameron Carter-Vickers and Kyle Walker-Peters.

Midfielder Winks (19) played in the Under-21s’ thrashing of Everton on Monday at Tottenham’s Enfield training base, while 17-year-old pair Carter-Vickers and Onomah were part of the team that booked an FA Youth Cup semi-final place by beating Nottingham Forest in the quarter-finals.

Winks was named as a substitute for Tottenham’s senior team against Liverpool in March last year and made his first-team debut this season as an 87th-minute substitute against Partizan Belgrade in the Europa League.

Onomah was handed his first-team bow by Pochettino in January this year for the final 15 minutes of the FA Cup third-round replay victory over Burnley at White Hart Lane.

Walker-Peters, who does not turn 18 until next month, is no relation of first-team right-back Kyle Walker, but is also a full-back and is an England Under-18 international.

Winks, Onomah, Carter-Vickers and Walker-Peters can be confident of being given more opportunities by Pochettino, who turned down the offer of new signings at Southampton in favour of promoting from within on more than one occasion.

For a club that had not produced a proper home-grown player since Ledley King up until a couple of seasons ago, Tottenham now look well set to benefit from a healthy production line.

Striker Kane and midfielder Mason have both signed new Tottenham contracts that run to 2020 and Bentaleb is expected to follow their lead by finalising a new deal worth more than double his current £10,000-a-week wages.

For a 20-year-old who did not make his first senior start for Spurs until January last year, Bentaleb is quickly banking himself valuable experience. He played in the World Cup and Africa Cup of Nations for Algeria, and has made 23 appearances for Tottenham this season.

“We (Algeria) were kicked out of the World Cup against Germany,” said Bentaleb. “That was a big disappointment, but this was my first final. I can only learn from it and I hope there will be more to come.”

Kane, who has scored 24 goals in all competitions for Tottenham, added: “A lot of us were playing in our first final and it’s an experience, and we’ve got to learn from it.

“When you see Chelsea lifting that trophy it makes the fire in your belly burn that you want to be back and you want to be lifting that trophy, and that’s what we’ve got to do with the squad we have.”

England manager Roy Hodgson has already assured Kane a place in his next squad and the 21-year-old is comfortable with all the extra attention he has been receiving.

“I’m enjoying it, it shows I’m doing well and that’s what any footballer wants – to have the backing from your fans and everyone around you,” said Kane. “I’ve always said if I’m picked (for England) it will be a very proud moment. I’ll be delighted.”

Townsend knows all about coping with national hype, having burst on to the scene for club and country in 2013 with a spectacular debut goal for England against Montenegro.

“We’ll only get better,” said 23-year-old Townsend. “We’re on the beginning of our journey and, hopefully, we can lift a trophy in a few years’ time.”

Tottenham’s youngsters may yet finish the season with a trophy, which could be just a significant for the future as a Wembley final was.

Wow. Dare we start to believe?

Always... But perhaps more justifiably so at this point.

Our development squad has produced Bentaleb, Mason, Townsend and Kane for the current first team. And several of those came through the academy, none of those were high profile youth signings. In addition Caulker and Carroll have looked PL quality on loan. Pritchard likely to prove himself in the PL at some point, at worst. Veljkovic and Fredricks not far behind.

That's a tremendous amount of PL quality to produce in a short amount of time, and I've probably forgotten someone. Several of "the next bunch" are highly rated and with a head coach willing to use youngsters, and seemingly talented at further developing them... Sky is the limit I would say ;)

Some have argued that Rose also qualifies as a product of our development squad. Livermore came through a bit earlier of course but despite the groans he used to engender amongst Spurs fans he hasn't turned out too badly at Hull, has he.

Rose could. He at least spent time with our development squad. I knew I had forgotten someone, Livermore is definitely worth mentioning alongside those I listed! Thanks.

Excited for Thursday, especially with it being on TV

Yeah. Could be exciting. Perhaps post-Swansea we should have an OMT so everyone is aware and could be some interesting discussion...

Excellent idea. I know it runs the risk of angering the OMT gods but why not start a thread after the Swansea match BE and see if it meets their approval?

if any of you regulars in here want to start a match thread for the Youth Cup game i don't think we need to wait for the Swansea OMT to be un stickied, what with only 24 hours between the fixtures - may help drum up a bit of interest in the game ;)

Is he worth keeping?

Striker Shaq Coulthirst has returned to parent club Tottenham Hotspur.

Signing on a loan deal in the summer from the Premier League outfit, Shaq found himself in and out of the Southend side and scored four times for Blues – against Portsmouth, Shrewsbury Town, Northampton Town and York City.

And Phil Brown was quick to thank Coulthirst for his efforts at the Club, and wishing the young forward the best for his future.

“It was something which was in the pipeline.,” Brown said.

“Spurs were going to recall him in a bid to get a contract at Tottenham or somewhere else.

“I just couldn’t guarantee that he’d get plenty of first team football here.

“He’s been outstanding in the way he has conducted himself during his time at Southend United and I’d like to wish him the very best in his future career."

Sounds pretty unlikely based in those comments. Then again we did keep Dawkins and Obika til they were about 30
