great thread, when this does happen, nobody's going to ring a bell, i imagine it will be unadulterated panic and absolute bedlam.

Nah. It'll be what James Kunstler calls "the long emergency". I'd be tempted to argue it's already started. I've not read William Gibson's most recent novel (it's sitting there on my bookshelf but not got round to it yet) but I believe the basic premise is that "the apocalypse", whatever it turns out to be, takes place over a 40 or 50 year period.
So there's no single day when everyone wakes up and freaks out. Just a steady decline into decrepitude.
