OMT *** Tottenham Hotspur vs Liverpool ***

We're we really lucky? 4 attempts on target to their 3, offside and minimal contact outside box for their penalty, a ref who blew for them but ignored blatant fouls on us, both keepers making good saves. I could go on but you get the picture!

We looked sluggish, our passing isn't quite there yet and we lacked pace and power. It's clear we have work to do to reach the standard set last season but I'm not having this 'lucky" bs. Vorm was outstanding but so was mignolet!
You clearly weren't at the game - our shape was appalling, we were dominated and we were so lucky not to be 2-0 down at half time. We look slow and really disorganised - I am worried

I've never looked forward to an international break and I won't now because I don't waste my time watching friendlies but this couldn't have happened at a better time for us. The players aren't short of fitness, thats pretty hard to do in this day and age with such a short close season but they're lacking sharpness and cohesion, thats fixed by extra time on the training field. Our ridiculous pre season schedule didn't help anyone except the PLC's bank balance.
A word on probably the worst refereeing performance since Foy against stoke, there were too many mistakes to mention.
I've never seen Vorm put in a performance like that for us or Swansea, I'd go as far as to say when he came off his line to make some of those stops, he was quicker than Lloris and was unquestionably our man of the match. Its not just a case of getting Dembele back, We're extremely lucky to have 5 points if you look at the 3 games, we always start slowly and I love grinding out points from poor performances but this was a very unPochettino team performance, maybe we'll get a lift from some unexpected signings in the xfer window, we definitely need more competition for places.

Grass seemed to be too long to me. Its the same for both teams but consistently our passes seemed to be undercut. We actually got into great positions on 3-4 occasions in the 2nd half and pass seemed good but slowed up along the floor.
It would seem an odd excuse but I'm sticking with it!

I noticed similar very early on....the ball seemed to stick and not move freely.

Media (Sky) narrative:

Liverpool cheated by officials and Lucky Spurs

Liverpool were denied a clear penalty when referee Bobby Madley didn't give point to the spot even though the incident involving Jan Vertonghen and Sep Matic occuerd before the ball was in play. The laws of the game should be irrelevant when Liverpool are involved so we are going to bang on about the injustices against Jurgen Klopp's team totally ignoring what the laws of the game state.

Liverpool thoroughly dominated the game and should have been 2 goals ahead when Mane (who lets not even the mention the 4 cautionable offences that were ignored) converted after Adam Lallana was only marginally offside.

Former Liverpool captains Graeme Souness, Jamie Carragher and Jamie Redknapp all thought the reds deserved to win and that decisions went against them.

(liverpool were playing away to tottenham hotspur who scored a fortuitous late equaliser).

I thought this would be the case with Vertonghen: the ball not being in play.

Did they show it on MOTD?

They did. Shearer was at considerable pains to point out he understood there would be no penalty awarded if the ball wasn't in play at the time of any infringement, and they then rolled the VT, in which it was absolutely clear that Vertonghen's grappling offence was committed before Henderson had taken the corner. Shearer's conclusion? That it should have been a penalty and the referees have been told to crack down on it and there's got to be consistency.

Apart from Coutinho's big chance in the first, Matip's header against the crossbar and Wijnaldum's deflected shot at the end (and the goal, obviously), Liverpool didn't really have anything. Sure, they pressed us well in the first half, forcing us to do mistakes, but thanks to a bright Michel Vorm, they didn't manage to create any chances out of it. So even though we've conceded that we were poor, and Liverpool are being hailed as superb (for their impressive spell for 30 mins in the first half - in which they didn't really create much), the reality is probably a bit more nuanced. Looking back at the match now without the emotions involved, I'd say a draw was the right result. I think people get the idea that Liverpool were so great because of their very dominant spell in the first half (but that's basically what they had) and because it was against Spurs. Had it been against Bournemouth, for instance, it wouldn't have been noticed as much.

I thought Luverpoo just packed the midfield and played mid/ling ball footy which is why countinho had little influence

I really think there gonna be all over the place again This season and will struggle against teams that sit deep and play lines of 4

Out issue was as a the home side and the better side we expect to play the football and were missing the glue that puts it all together in Dembele

I agree that we looked better when Alli dropped into that role

I thought Wanyama had a great game again and he is showing his value all the time

We really need the attacking players to find their rhythm quickly as they look disjointed and off the pace

I'm at a loss for words.

So they know the laws but want to ignore them?

It's incredible.

What upset me yesterday was Eriksen being caught on the ball for the umpteenth time in the last matches.

I like Christian very much, but his start to this season has been poor.

Spot on, we have not played well as a team so far this season but there is nothing to get hysterical about ( which some seem to love doing). We started slow but Vorm pulled off a great save to keep us in it and went on to show what a good keeper he is. Liverpool huffed and puffed but never really created that many chances but neither did we, at the moment we have several players who are not playing to their best ( Eriksen, Kane, Alli ) but as you say we had more shots on target then they did and Mignolet also pulled off a couple of saves.

As the game progressed we looked better in defense and Toby had a free header which he should have put away, all in all i think the result was fair ( despite what the scouse media and some of our hysterical fans) have said. We do need to strengthen our bench though as seeing the options when we were under the cosh was worrying.

This shows how undercooked we are compared to Liverpool

Tottenham Pre season minutes
Vorm 210
Walker 45
Alderweireld 90
Vertonghen 0
Rose 45
Dier 85
Wanyama 135
Lamela 171
Alli 76
Eriksen 90
Kane 62

Liverpool Pre season minutes
Mignolet 225
Clyne 180
Lovren 498
Matip 270
Milner 176
Henderson 266
Lallana 225
Wijnaldum 214
Coutinho 288
Mane 406
Firmino 406

This is Poch trying not to burn out our players that have played all summer.

Yes, Shearer went to pains to say that 'he knows it was before the ball was in play.....but why does the referee give the defender the benefit of doubt by not just waiting for the ball to go into play and then take action'.....which is a nonsense argument.....if the ref could see that an infringement might be about to take place surely he should intervene at that point which is a bit of a nonsense argument if you ask me.

Surely if the pundits knew the rules and also wanted consistency they would have also highlighted the refs lack of consistency with Manes cards or lack of.... There were 4 yellows that should have gone his way and he got 1. Suprise surprise, an inconsistent ref for the big decisions

What was worrying to see today was that we resorted to the long ball over and over. Poch needs to find a way out of the back when we are being pressed that isn't a 40-50 yard pass.
Ehhh. You are wrong. The best way of dealing with a high press, is to play the ball past the pressing players. We have 2 strong guys playing up front. Play it up to them to lay it off is extremely effective as you get rid of 6 Liverpool players with 1 low risk pass.
