There's been some articles about the kind of statistics used by football managers and scouts, I can't remember where to find any of them now, but I'm almost certain the stats that are being used go beyond basic whoscored.com stats and that they're used to inform decisions. I don't think it's right that "Stewart Downing was signed for the fact he had the most crosses in the league the previous season"

Personally I think Stuart Downing was signed as part of a Dalglish gameplan including Andy Carroll and quite possibly Henderson crossing from the right. A gameplan built around a big traditional centre forward. I don't think it was a particularly bad signing from that perspective although it obviously didn't work out.

I'm not sure how much of that was Comolli to be honest. Seems rather out of character compared to the player types he signed for us and of course the Arsenal system he was a scout in.

I can recommend this

there is fair amount in there about the analysis clubs use to identify and target players. Downing is used as a case study and it goes a lot further than just the number of crosses.

fdb is used to working on a budget isn't he. thats why levy's interested.

I'm pretty sure Ajax has the biggest budget of any club in the Eresdivisie....

The majority of the Arsenal board will still be delighted with Wenger as long as he keeps delivering CL without maxing out his transfer budget. Might even get that bloody trophy this season.

Quite possibly. I wouldn't rule them out of a move to secure de Boer, though, with Wenger moving upstairs at the same time, if the alternative is his coming to us. The thing that might give them pause is the thought of him decamping to Barcelona in the not-too-distant future, but they may feel the politics of the situation forces their hand. The need to keep Spurs down the pecking order will be a factor in people's minds, I'm sure, up the road there as well as at OT.

Wenger is tried and tested top four, and they'll probably spend big on players again now that their stadium debt is out the way. I can't see them gambling on a manager who's only done it in Holland to improve on that.

I think Wenger feels he can win the league still. Their defensive record was quite poor last year but ever since they have started playing Koscielny and Mertesacker in the middle they have tightened up at the back.

If it is any consolation, when Walcott (justifiably, in my view) was giving the old two-nil symbol to the fans who were abusing him, that was the point at which Arsenal's title challenge ended.

You could say they're smart enough to know that they can't compete financially with 3 other teams,so why spend any more than necessary?

It's risk/reward, they are happy with current reward, anything further would require an order of magnitude more spend/risk that they don't see the corresponding value in.

I don't know which of Poch, FdB or Benitez I'd prefer, I kind of feel like it's a very small game of minesweeper and only one of them may actually work. I think de Boer is 3rd on my list as he's the one I'm least familiar with.

Excellent! :) I really liked that one...

(Not only because your opinion on those 3 choices is exactly the same as mine)

I'd take anyone of them, with preference to who could give us a yes answer the quickest, we could get in and start preseason work with (and transfer activities)

i just hope that fdb isn't just using us like hazard did.

It's a bit of a diversion but I don't think Hazard really used us.
We were likely to have got him if we'd qualified for the CL ahead of Chelsea. He said as much not long after signing for them and didn't exactly endear himself to some of their fans with that.
Of course, some of his performances have served to allow forgiveness and forgetfulness since then

Wouldn't count on it.

A) Because as someone pointed out, he hardly worked on a limited budget in relative terms, they're the biggest club in the Netherlands and there's only really three big clubs there.
B) Because he and his brother have mentioned on at least two occasions that we have ambition and a big budget, so he's clearly been told if he gets the gig there will be a wad of cash to spend on players.

I don't believe that for a second, when was the last time we had a high net spend on transfers?

What we can offer though is higher wages than Ajax and relatively high value assets in the squad that can be sold to fund signings.

I would love FDB and have a good feeling regarding him. Young, fairly successful and think he could do well at our club. First time I would feel excited about a Manager coming in.

I follow Ajax in Holland and AC Milan in Italy, anyway Ajax as good as they are going forward have put in some shocking performances defensively, I would be happy for him to come but I hope people give him more time then they have Sherwood because we will have to put up with some poor defensive displays.

Have they punched above their weight?

Always suprised to hear about the Ajax defence being so leaky given that FDB and Stam were both defenders. I hope that it's because the team have young defenders that are prone to mistakes.

The Ajax philosophy is to play out from the back which does expose the defenders somewhat when they fook up. Add their age into the mix then I guess that is not a good ****tail, but something that disappears with experience you would think (hope!).
