***OMT Tottenham Hotspur v Emirates Marketing Project***

Something I haven't seen mentioned (apologies if missed) is Skipps contribution to that third goal. Received the ball in a tight spot under pressure and not only wriggled out of it but went FORWARD and without that we would not have scored. Just like Bryan Gil doing similar for Sons goal and Ben Davies getting ahead of the attacker to head the ball to Son for GLCs goal. These are crucial contributions that don't get the headlines, but all part of positive front foot football. The future is bright....

This one, right? Laughable. He couldn’t stop himself even as it was happening before his eyes.

To be fair to Neville and Carragher, how we played first half was suicidal. We coughed up several chances through trying that. It’s mad stuff, especially at City.

However, all factors considered, I thought the second half was our best half of football this season. Ange made the correct tweak and for us to go there without a centre back and with a bunch of other absentees, be the better side and come back twice to get a result was very impressive.

That’s on the manager for me. His post match interview showed a man who knew what had happened, Deki’s interview told us Ange is an incredible leader. People on here said that Conte and Jose instilled fear in players. That it was about not making a mistake. Ange is the absolute opposite of that.

Neither approach is right or wrong but you have to say that Ange’s makes for a much better watch.

It has been mentioned a couple of times.
It's what they are being told to do, gil, Udogie, Bissouma, kulu, glc, Porro all going forward whenever they can.
Sometimes it is going work, sometimes it isn't.
It's the managers way and it's good to see the players buy into it.

But what’s the alternative? Emirates Marketing Project are going to cause you problems, create chances and score goals in most matches, no matter how the opposition plays. You can sit back and try to nullify it but that’s not guaranteed to get you anymore than we did, and as you say Ange’s approach is better to watch.

PEH make a big contribution but Kulusevski said Ange went off at them because they weren’t playing enough. He wanted them to be braver. We also didn’t change our approach. As far as I can remember, we took just as many chances with our play in the second half, leading to the third goal of course.

I just don’t see this run away, all out attack at all costs train that others see. And I don’t see how reverting to Conte’s tactics is the answer. I know you’re not suggesting that but it seems like a lot of the narrative is that. How “naive” Spurs are to dare try and play out from the back! The pundits just can’t get out away from that narrative. It’s what led to Ange’s now-famous “I’m just copying Pep mate” because Gary Neville was talking like a macaron throughout the Man Utd game.

It means we wget smashed doesn’t it 🤬😃
I mean we play this way against everyone and they all get to smash us to pieces… that’s the view some people have
In reality, playing a consistent focussed way means we are keeping the opponent worried about us and they know they can get pegged back at any time. That’s much better than sitting on the edge of the area waiting for a mistake or a bit of magic

It's not necessarily about sitting back or attacking. There are common sense things to do in my opinion. Emerson isn’t capable of playing out from the back. He’s just not good enough on the ball and yesterday, he coughed up possession multiple times and two of them almost led to goals. He can get away with it more at right back because it’s a less dangerous area to give the ball away. Don’t ask him to do things he isn’t capable of.

If we’re playing out, that’s fine but against a side like City, you need some sort of insurance policy. That’s what PEH provided when he came on. First half, Gio wasn’t doing enough defensively. You look at the one Doku hits the bar with. About 5-10 seconds before, we are up the pitch and lose it. Gio strolls back and the City player is busting a nut to get into the box. Now, some of that’s on Gio but he’s never going to give you enough protection. PEH will give you a lot more in that respect. We were way too open first half in the middle of the park especially when we coughed up possession.

Credit to Ange, the tweaks he made at half time and the message he gave to the players worked. Listening to him, he’s got a brilliant outlook on things – I just think at times, he needs to be a bit more practical and less idealistic. But, while I respect Conte and Mourinho 110%, I’m enjoying Ange a hell of a lot more than either of them.

Fair enough, those are reasonable things. I don’t necessarily think PEH helped in the sense that it stopped us playing risky football, but he’s a very solid option in what was a very physical battle.

On Royal, I guess the idea from Ange is that a) Royal isn’t going to get better at it by avoiding the football b) Romero is back next match and there’s no real adjustments needed. The way we play is the way we play. Yes, that is definitely a riskier strategy but I love it. I believe it will absolutely reap long term rewards.

You can also very easily substitute Royal’s name for any other player. Bissouma yesterday. Porro last week v Villa. Maddison v Arsenal etc

One thing I think no-one has mentioned, and that people never seem to mention, is how Emirates Marketing Project couldn’t keep up their initial level of pressing for the whole 90 mins. I think that’s a big part of why we were better second half - because they physically couldn’t keep pressing us the way they did in the first half, when they were rabid at times!

No, PEH didn’t stop us playing risky football at all. But he gave us a bit of solidity in the middle of the pitch when it was needed that Gio didn’t while Johnson played much better than Gil out wide.

Emerson is much poorer on the ball than any of those lads. Bissouma made a stupid and terrible mistake as did Maddison against Arsenal. That’ll happen but it’ll be the exception rather than the rule with those players. Emerson will do it far more often and at CB, it can be fatal. I don’t want to go in too hard on Emerson, he’s a good full back and he’s been asked to play a position he’s not familiar with against top players.

But, let’s be fair, if anyone said we’d get a point yesterday, I’d have laughed my head off at them. That we deserved it, showed bottle and played some great, if nerve shredding, football to do it has me in a very good mood this morning and looking forward to West Ham on Thursday.

And that's on Pep

- I said it at the start of the game, if I was Pep I would have pressed us for 60 odd minutes then brought on 5 subs (knowing we couldn't match), so if nothing else they would win on legs. He actually did the opposite, he brought on a mix of players, at least 2 who were simply going to sit back)
- Ange adjusted for the physicality of the game (City did what they always do with us, little fouls constantly), and he pushed Gio up and Kulu wide, all three contributed to winning.
- Similar to when we played a few of the better teams this year, their goals were luck/mistakes, ours were well crafted

This feels like a pivot moment

- Lose and it's 4 on the bounce (been a long time), the naive conversation gains strength, the players maybe start to doubt
- This feels like a win, approach justified, United, City, Arsenal, Pool played with points in each game (Chelsea down to 9 isn't really an example), shows we can mix it up with anyone.

Romero back for next game, maybe Sarr as well, Richi able to get a few minutes, still not out of trouble but looking better

Emerson has probably never played in that position in his life more than 2-3 times, and yet he followed orders, and yet the manager prefers him to Dier in that position. Hopefully Romero there Thursday and we wouldn't have to call on him in that role again.

Your last point is the relevant one, we hung in there, we made mistakes, we gave up opportunities but we stayed in game and looked to hurt City anytime we could, cut out 2-3 mistakes and if Dias hadn't made a great block, we could have won that game easily on merit (yes, could have gone the other way as well).

This side is proving to me, we are a good team, we won't roll over and we can mix it up with pretty much anyone. Can we do it consistently? think we need the squad back to answer that.

Your forgetting the fear factor
City are scared brickless of us
They also know we can play ball as good as anyone so to keep on pressing you need the energy but you need it to be 100% all the time
We passed through them several times and that leaves a mark on how they approach their press

Actually looks like he's given the free kick, they took it with a moving ball and he's called it back
I have been reffing recently in my son's under 10s league. The abuse from parents and other managers really makes you realize how awful it is being a ref. It makes me see them in a different light. Well except for Mike Dean.

Edit thought the ref had a decent game yesterday tbf plus City are assuming Grealish definitely scored from there. It's not like the ref disallowed a perfectly legit goal.

Klopp & Arteta have started this brick ..

Yes, the ref made a mistake, it happens, it has happened for years, so what ... City didn't drop points because of a play on call at midfield, they dropped points because they conceded 3 goals at home to a Spurs b team.

Kudos to Pep for his comment on not making an "Arteta" statement

Ref made a mess of that call, let’s be fair. But he’s making a split second decision and he got this one spectacularly wrong. We’ve all done it.

However, Haaland can rage all he wants. Firstly, there’s no guarantee that Grealish scores. Secondly, that pr!ck missed two absolute sitters that I reckon the ref could have scored. City’s failure to win was more down to him than the referee.

I did it for a few when I was around 15/16 for pocket money as the local club paid for a few of us to do the course.

Must have been around the same age groups as you, it's awful, it seemed every week you had some parent scream at you as if you are stopping little Timmy from Hassocks under 10s becoming the next Beckham.

I gave it up after a year, wasn't worth the hassle.

I had no intention of progressing beyond a Saturday morning job, but how many refs have been put off from doing it up and down the country?

The Level of refs we have here is 100 percent down to the FA not protecting grass roots refs

I think Sky had audio that suggested he didn't blow when he first raises his whistle to his mouth, I wonder if the ref thought / assumed Grealish was offside so decided to blow for the freekick instead to hurry it along.
