Cycling thread

Exactly the reason he dropped out early, he was carrying a knock but him and fabian cancellara decided to leave early to prepare for the Olympics road time trial. I am partly in love with Tony Martin and would love to see him get the win, i like to think we have a similar riding style.

I imagine it will be Wiggins, Martin and Cancellara but i could not guess in which order, very exciting and i only hope i can watch it somehow as i won't be in the country at the time.

Im sure Latvia will have a team in the Olympics mate

Is the road race at the Olympics mainly for the sprinters due to the lack of climbs around London?

Well that is the thought behind it but it could go to a strong man who can ride at high speed in a brake away. Often riders from different nations will get together in a breakaway and work to keep away from the main field then when they get close to the finish they ride for themselves. Team GB will try to ride at such a pace that no one can launch an attack.

It's always interesting with World championships and Olympics as you're riding for your country, but friendships and team alliances often take over.

Anyone know Tony Martins status? Thinking of having a flutter on him for the Olympic Time Trial at 9/2 on SkyBet.

Did he drop out of the Tour because of injury or just because he had a couple unlucky punctures in the time trials and wanted to prepare for the Olympics?

"Chatted to Tony Martin's coach today. He's still quietly confident about Olympic TT but says that hand injury was big mental blow."

The difference is there's a maximum of 5 in each team so Cav's team wont be able to control the race. I'd love to see Cav win but I think it will someone from a breakaway who happens to have good legs that day.

Boonen was unstoppable in the Spring classics. He'll be in the mix for sure if he's back in form again.

I guess this is the appropriate thread.

My number 1 Olympics event will be the Womens 200m, hoping for Anna Meares to get up over Victoria Pendleton. No love lost between the two, and both give as good as they get.

Meares is a machine though. Sometimes see her cycling around here, she's a freak. Broke her neck a few years back, now will be amongst the medal favourites.

Great documentary over here recently about Pendleton. She's mental. Did Mears at the world champs this year in Melbourne.

Yeah no doubt Pendleton overall is the better racer, but it's one of those events where anyone can win on the day. Like I said, it's probably the contest I'm looking forward to the most, alongside the men's 100m sprint (running).

Yep, Mears has had her number recently so it was a surprise when she reversed the trend.

Loads of very tight contests at the Olympics

I have a question for you cycling buffs. It's about the Tour de France. I don't really understand how it works, I mean I know the guy with the quickest aggregate time wins the overall race, and along the way there are several stages and time trails which allow different people to get their moment in the sun. What I don't get is how the teams work. I keep hearing how Chris Froome helped Bradley Wiggins by slowing down the rest of the pack to help Wiggins take his lead, and that Froome himself could have won if he hadn't sacrificed himself for the team. What's that all about? Surely it's a race and everyone should cycle as fast as they can to see who is the quickest? I'd be grateful to have a quick summary as to how it works as I would like to have a better understanding.

The guy who gets to Paris in the least amount of time wins the tour. Some cyclists do not do very well on mountains and are slower at cycling which is why they can not win the tour, some are specialists at mountain climbing but can not time trial. Depending on what you are best on you will race better on certain days.

To win the tour you have to be good all round, this year we were lucky there were not so many hard mountain top finishes and more time trialing then usual this allowed wiggins to have a great shot at winning it.

In teams you will have people signed up to do a specific job, much like in football we will sign a midfielder who can maybe score a few goals, but does that mean he should be a striker because he can score more then some of our strikers.

Froome surprised me with his time trials he did better there then i expected but also so did richie porte so sky have a couple of options going forward over the next few years.

Wiggins is a strong cyclist but in the high mountains he struggles to contain the better climbers. I think next year he will pace set for Froome and end up himself getting a top 10-15 finish.

The problem is that in a fairly easy tour such as this years one sky were unable or unwilling to chase down the attacks on the earlier stages and bring the pelton in as a bunch for cav to have his sprints. Now after what Froome said yesterday that sky want to compete for the yellow every year it means cav is in brick street. But reading this link i would assume he is off to be honest with you.

Sky have a decent young cyclist in Ben Swift who can sprint a bit but i wonder what the make up of their team will be next year especially if the team time trial returns.

Yeah I guess for Cav the Olympics is priority no.1 due to the large British contingent in the Sky team. That said, he's signed a three year deal so will only see the benefits of the Sky team for this season only.

What's the deal in cycling, do teams have to pay compensation to get someone else who's under contract or can they not move teams during that time unless they get it terminated?

Great summary!

Chich, What are your predictions for next year?

Is it a definate that the course won't be one that Wiggins could win on?

If so, is Froome good enough to potentially win? Will Schleck and Contador be back and would they be favourites ahead of him?

Also if Cav has to leave, where could he potentially go? Are there many potential teams that would love to build a team around him like he had at HTC?
