Cycling thread

I just found out that Bradley Wiggins was born in Belgium and Chris Froome from Kenya so should we really be celebrating OTT especially on the
news of 'our success'. Like the Cricket team - without the South Africans in the team we would be no where near a top team.

Wiggins (absent) father was an Aussie. No doubt he is a product of British culture and cycling.

fudge off. Wiggins moved to London when he was 2!! Strauss and Prior were both children. Pietersen and Trott I'll grant you but they moved here when they were teenagers and have English parentage. Regardless in the globalised world we live in and with 2 million immigrants moving here in the past 10 years this is the way it is. If someone wants to call themselves English and pay taxes here and embrace our culture that that's good enough for me. You're a racist.

I know full well cav will not win the tour as he is a sprinter but if sky decide to have froome as team leader and ride for him then that will leave cav up brick street because they will not chase down attacks for him to get stage victories and a sprinter as good as him should finish his career with more then 1 green jersey.

He has to leave sky because it is becoming clear that froome will be leader next season and they are never going to race for the GC and for cav, i would have thought that was obvious.
 
They came in to that final curve at such a high pace that they nearly didn't make it through.Sagan looked immense as well once he got going.
 
I watched the last three or four laps - dont get the tactics side of things. Why do they all huddle ie ride in a line? How do the team help the others out etc?

I appreciate the achievement just unsure of the tactics and how you actually win the TDF.

As for leading out a sprint, the first rider sets the pace and takes most of the air resistance, letting the others "slipstream" behind him. It's virtually impossible to advance in the field at the speeds they're going. As they get closer to the finish the leaders drop out one by one until final stretch. The last leadout man is usually a pretty good sprinter himself.

During all stages you have the lesser riders riding in front, taking most of the head wind, and carrying water bottles so the top riders can remain fresh until the finish.

Wow - thats interesting - really did not know that much thought went into it.

I was kinda thinking - are they just trying to fool the other cyclists into think cavendish was in front but in fact he wasnt etc.

That would also explain why they all cycle in tight huddles Never understood that bit - all in a line I was like well you can overtake the bastard by just going round the outside.

Leading into a sprint it's not about fooling anyone, they just want to go so fast that nobody is able to break away. Last few hundred meters the top sprinters are in a league of their own, but there are other riders that can go on their own the last kilometres. Riding in a line like that enables them to go faster than they can on their own and it's less energy consuming.
 
Anyone know Tony Martins status? Thinking of having a flutter on him for the Olympic Time Trial at 9/2 on SkyBet.

Did he drop out of the Tour because of injury or just because he had a couple unlucky punctures in the time trials and wanted to prepare for the Olympics?

Exactly the reason he dropped out early, he was carrying a knock but him and fabian cancellara decided to leave early to prepare for the Olympics road time trial. I am partly in love with Tony Martin and would love to see him get the win, i like to think we have a similar riding style.

I imagine it will be Wiggins, Martin and Cancellara but i could not guess in which order, very exciting and i only hope i can watch it somehow as i won't be in the country at the time.
