LIVERPOOL have made a shock move for Celtic striker Georgios Samaras.

And the Greece star, 27, is keen on a £5million switch.

Kop boss Brendan Rodgers is desperate for a forward when the January transfer window opens and is also keen on Chelsea hitman Daniel Sturridge.

But the Reds board have made enquiries about Samaras despite his unsuccessful spell at Emirates Marketing Project between 2006-2008.

Samaras emerged as an option after shining during Celtic’s run to the Champions League knockout stages. He scored in all of their away games as they made it out of a group with Barcelona, Benfica and Spartak Moscow.

Samaras is also eager to prove himself after just 12 goals in 65 games during his stint at City.

But Scottish giants Celtic are reluctant to lose Samaras, who has a contract with them until 2014.

Shakhtar Donetsk’s Fernandinho has told Italy’s Calciomercato that he will be playing football in the Premier League for a Manchester club this January.

Martin O'Neill is preparing a £5m January pursuit of Tottenham defender Michael Dawson as part of a spending spree to revive Sunderland's flagging season.

The Black Cats boss will be given significant funds by club owner Ellis Short in a bid to correct a poor start to the season.

And 29-year-old Dawson is top of the list, according to the Sunday People.

Sunderland find themselves in the relegation zone, with just two wins and 13 points to their name so far.

Their defensive record hasn't been too catastrophic - with 21 goals conceded - but O'Neill believes Dawson's leadership qualities could add extra steel to the side.

When Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas arrived in the summer, he was willing to offload Dawson and a £5.5m fee was agreed with Queens Park Rangers before the player turned it down.

However, Dawson, who has four England caps, has worked hard to win back his starting place in the last few weeks - making a January move less likely.

Sunderland may face competition from QPR, with Harry Redknapp reportedly keen on signing a player with whom he enjoyed a good relationship at Spurs.

Dawson has been at White Hart Lane since January 2005, when he joined for £8m from Nottingham Forest.

Not really, whats an insult is the ridiculous prices for English players. 5m - 7m tops should really be the going rate, its only the silly money and costs for English players that have driven them up. On the continent a player of that level would be far cheaper.

The only way Everton can afford this is if Fellani moves in January otherwise Kenwright will empty his pockets out in front of Moyes in January and the contents will consist of a 50 pence piece and a single Werther's Orignal.
 
Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is prepared to make Radamel Falcao the club's top earner by offering the striker a staggering £10million-a-year contract.

The Colombia forward is the club's No 1 transfer target and the Russian billionaire is determined to ensure the prolific South American becomes the next global superstar to make his way to Stamford Bridge.

And Sportsmail has learned the West London club will offer the 26-year-old a deal worth in the region of £200,000-per-week, to lure Falcao.

The pay package would eclipse the club's current top earner Fernando Torres, who is understood to earn £175,000-per-week.

The staggering salary underlines how serious the current Champions League holders are about signing Falcao, who is viewed as the hottest property in world football.

Meanwhile, Blues starlet Connor Hunte, 16, is close to signing a new long-term contract with the Blues.

Chelsea have joined a host of Premier League clubs seeking to capitalise on Theo Walcott's contract stand-off with Arsenal, although the England international may wait until the summer before making a decision on his future.

The 23-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season and his refusal to commit to a new deal at Arsenal is adding to Arsène Wenger's problems at The Emirates Stadium. Wenger admitted this week to being "frustrated" at the lack of progress on Walcott's contract, with Arsenal believed to have offered the forward £75,000 a week to extend his six-year stay in north London, but is adamant the club will not cash in on the player during January.

Chelsea are prepared to test Arsenal's resolve with an offer for Walcott. They are likely to be rivalled by Liverpool while both Manchester clubs are also monitoring the situation. Walcott, however, is expected to delay any decision until, as a free agent, he could have his pick of the Premier League's leading clubs and command a lucrative salary.

The forward has repeatedly said money is not the reason for his stand-off with Arsenal but he does want assurances from Wenger about being played as a striker rather than a winger. But Walcott is aware that other clubs will better Arsenal's offer and, as he has settled in the area, Chelsea offer the added attraction of being relatively local.

Champions League football will also be a factor in Walcott's final decision. Arsenal are seventh in the Premier League, albeit only two points off the final qualification place, and have participated in the Champions League for 15 consecutive seasons, while Manchester United, City and Chelsea are on course to qualify for next season.

Liverpool's absence from the European elite counts against them but the manager, Brendan Rodgers, who shares an agent with Walcott, will persist with attempts to lure the former Southampton player to the club he supported as a boy. Rodgers is prepared for Arsenal to reject their last chance to secure a fee for Walcott in January, however, and has lined up deals for Chelsea's £12m-rated Daniel Sturridge and Blackpool's Thomas Ince next month. The Liverpool manager hopes signs of progress at Anfield this season, with a top-four finish still a target, will improve his prospects of signing Walcott in the summer. Liverpool have also secured the second-choice goalkeeper Brad Jones on a new long-term contract.

Walcott's options are not limited to the Premier League. Several Italian clubs, including the champions, Juventus, have inquired about the England international's availability and are willing to offer superior terms than Arsenal to entice the player to Serie A. Juventus are believed to be prepared to pay Walcott – who is the latest in a long line of assets that Arsenal have allowed to approach the end of their contracts – £90,000-a-week should he move to Turin.

I do agree with your general point on English players being way overpriced. Lescott, Henderson, Barry, Downing, etc.., the list goes on but to value Dawson as only 5 mil really is too far the other direction IMO.

Dawson has not featured a whole lot lately through injury but he was a pivotal player for us in the CL qualifying run. Even his recent performances (before his new injury) were a timely reminder of what you get when he plays. We shoudn't be entertaining an offer less than €12mil for him. In fact we probably shouldn't be entertaining an offer at all.
