The Academy, NextGen, U18 & U21 Premier League and On-Loan Thread

Liverpool Football Club is delighted to announce the appointment of Rodolfo Borrell as head of academy coaching, with Tottenham's Alex Inglethorpe replacing him as reserve team coach.
molde, rodolfo borrell

Borrell arrived at the club in July 2009 and has overseen the development of several players now in the first team, initially as U18s coach and latterly as boss of the reserves.

His promotion has created an opportunity for Inglethorpe, a former midfielder with Watford, Leyton Orient and Exeter who has worked with the U18s at Spurs with distinction for several years.

Frank McParland continues with his role as Academy director, with first-team manager Brendan Rodgers praising his contribution to the club's continued commitment to developing exciting young talent.

Rodgers commented: "I'm delighted that Alex has decided to join us in our journey to create a philosophy that runs directly through the club. He has many years of experience in youth football and also managed at senior level. His unswerving belief and commitment to our way of working will bring continued success in this role.

"I've been extremely impressed with Rodolfo in my short period at the club. His thinking is very similar to mine in the best way to educate and develop players. His role will make richer the philosophy we are creating at the club from U9s through to the first team.

"I'm also delighted with the great work done by Frank McParland in leading the Academy and I look forward to working closely with him to continually develop our talents to play for the first team."

The appointments have been welcomed by McParland.

"I'm delighted for Rodolfo," he said. "He's been heavily involved with the club for three and a half years as U18s manager and then reserve team coach.

"He brings invaluable experience to this new role and I'm sure it's going to be a smooth transition.

"Alex also has great experience from working with the U18s at Spurs for many years, where he has helped to produce some fantastic players.

"I'm sure he is going to help us push on at academy level. It's a fantastic appointment and I'm looking forward to working with him over the coming years."

Another 90 minutes for Smith as Millwall recorded a 1-0 away win over Wolves and moved into the playoff spots.

Haven't seen him play there but he's obviously done really well to work his way in to a team on such good form. Seems like he's really taken the opportunity =D>

Smith has done well at most of his loan clubs and at u21 level. Don't think he'd let anybody down if he played in our team

NextGen Series Group 1 Result: Wolfsburg 2-3 Anderlecht.

This puts Anderlecht on 6 points with Spurs on 8 points.

We play the Belgians at Enfield on 13th December and a draw would be enough to see Spurs progress with Barcelona to the knock-out stages.

Shame.

Any result other than a win for Anderlecht would have meant that we were already qualified for the knockout stage.

Hopefully we'll have enough anyway to get at least a draw against them at home.

NextGen Series Round-Up:

Liverpool produced a stellar performance against Borussia Dortmund this evening to win 3-0 at Langtree Park. A brace from captain Connor Coady and a second-half goal from Adam Morgan kept Liverpool's qualification hopes alive, and sends Dortmund out of the NextGen Series as they finish bottom of the group. The Reds need to beat holders Internazionale in their next game to progress to the last sixteen.

Sporting CP crashed to a 1-5 defeat at the hands of Aston Villa this evening who subsequently secured their place in the next round of the tournament. The Villains played some exceptional football, and outclassed the Portuguese side throughout. Two goals a piece for Graham Burke and Mikey Drennan and a fine strike from Donacien gave Villa a famous win against the Group 4 leaders.

PSV Eindhoven clinched a 1-0 victory over Celtic FC tonight to send the Scots out of the tournament. In front of 5,000 fans at the Phillips Arena, Phillip Cocu's side edged a nervy game, with both teams desperate to get the three points. A late goal from Joshua Brenet gave the home side a dramatic win, but Aston Villa's away win in Portugal means they will now have to wait to see whether they are one of the four best 3rd place finishers.

Athletic club thrashed Marseille 5-0 this evening to boost their chances of qualification from Group 5. The Spanish side looked comfortable throughout the tie and the three points means they now lie second in Group six with two games left to
play, one point off Marseille. The French side will have to wait for the result between Arsenal and Athletic next week before they know whether they have qualified for the last 16.

Paris St. Germain extended their lead at the top of Group 2 with a 2-1 win against Emirates Marketing Project which also sees the English side knocked out at the Group stage. The French side took a 2 goal lead after sixty minutes with goals coming from Pierre Bourdin and Romain Habran but a late rally from City saw them score from the penalty spot and have several late chances to draw level. Unfortunately for the Blues it wasn't their night and the Parisiens finished deserved winners.

Just read on the Beeb that Bostock would be happy to sign permanently for Swindon..

Any news on "our" boy Fryers who went to Liege?

Also, what happened to Ravel Morrison, has he featured much for West Ham?

Do they want him though? Thought he was struggling to get a game for them

Hmm...am I right to think we are already through as with 8 points, we should have guaranteed at least finishing as one of the four best 3rd placed teams?

We're not quite there yet, as there are several teams who could finish their groups in third place on eight or more points, including Chelsea, PSV, Liverpool, Olympiakos & Arsenal.

1. PSV is confirmed at 9 points, and one of the four best 3rd place teams.
2. The third place team in bricky's group can only finish at 5 points and eliminated.

So we only need to find out whether 8 would be better than just one other group.

I think the key is Arsenal's group, as thier third place team can finish no better than 8, as Marseille is -6GD at eight points. Arseanl (5 pts) and Olympiacos (6) will each play Athletic (7) before wrapping up their group. Worst case scenario would be Olympiacos 9 pts, Scum 8, Marseille 8 (whatever the combination of the two remaining games, Marseille will finish no worse than 3rd) and Athletic 7. If GD is used as tie-breaker, 8 points should still be enough for us, unless we lose by 9 goals to finish at -7GD.

Adam Smith came close to a late winner for Millwall in Saturday's goalless draw against Charlton.

The full-back played 90 minutes as the two in-form teams in the Championship met in a South London derby at the New Den on Saturday.

Millwall had the better of it and Adam drilled just wide from 25 yards in the last action of note in the game.

Danny Rose played 90 minutes as Sunderland suffered a 2-1 defeat at Norwich City in the Premier League.

Jordan Archer made a crucial save to deny Bristol Rovers' Michael Smith with the score at 1-0 as Wycombe continued their fine form in League Two with a 2-0 at Adams Park.

In the FA Cup, Nathan Byrne was an unused substitute as Crawley Town toppled Chelmsford 3-0 to book a home tie against Premier League side Reading in the third round.

Young goalkeeper Jonathan Miles made a promising debut for Brentwood against Needham Market in Ryman League Division One North last weekend, including a fine save in the second half in a 1-1 draw.

Away from the UK, Bongani Khumalo played 90 minutes as PAOK drew 0-0 at Veria in the Greek Super League. That meant PAOK remain second but are now 10 points adrift of Olympiacos.
