'Smart cards' plan to stop benefits being spent on drink

The conservative party, the party of choice, unless your poor then we will tell you what to do and how to spend your pittance.
You mean how to spend our pittance.

Seriously though - I'm not a rich person from anyone's perspective but a family could live comfortably on the income tax I pay. That kind of tax was meant for the super rich, but years of this weird politics where everyone has to promise to waste more money than the other party means that people like you and I spend more on tax than I earned when I started out.

lol, I'd rather that to be honest than someone to borrow loads of money and hand it out with absolutely no plan or thought to pay it back. To me that is fraud and a criminal offence. ;)

We all pay tax,get over it. I would rather not fund the police but I do. It is the deal you make when you take part in society.

It's not a deal of any kind. It's taking one's money at the threat of being locked in a metal box with criminals and rapists.

That's not a deal, that's extortion.

By that logic so is sales. I have not agreed to the capitalist system.

If you choose not to buy the goods you don't have to pay. I don't get the option to not pay for a school or hospital I will never use, nor housing I will never need or a safety net I will never rely on.

I have to buy certain goods to survive. You use roads and transport, you went to school. All these you could only afford as part of a tax system unless you are richer than you let on in a previous post.

My parents paid taxes when I went to school. I don't use public transport except on very rare occasions, it smells really bad. I use roads, but as priority is not weighted to tax spend they are stealing from me there too.

All his tax increases (including the stealth ones), and plenty of spending.

Lol, how much spare time do you think I have? For the record, I don't read books about Arsenal or grooming kids either.

So what you are saying is that you feel free to comment on something you have no understanding about ? It is the intellectually honest thing to do to read an try and understand rival positions from your own. Never take pride in ignorance.

As for your examples of Browns supposed socialist policies neither were even close.

Well everyone's parents paid when they went to school, that is not an argument against the necessity of it being paid.

However I do agree that with services being cut right left and centre why we still are being taxed. We get taxed to pay for services we as individuals could not afford. If we are no longer receiving services then why pay at all ?

Economics was my second at uni - and I take an interest in politics/economics. I know more than enough about socialism without reading a one-sided piece of propaganda (socialism's main tool) about it.

If you want me to list the books I've read that contain elements of socialism then it's a very long list indeed.

My education was paid for. My son will never go to a state school, therefore I have no need to pay (other than extortion).

We're still being taxed because of the debts run up by your side of the centre. Once the deficit is clear, I'd expect to see tax cuts. I don't believe they will ever get back to where they should be though (somewhere around a flat rate of 20%).

As for what taxes should pay for, I think we differ a little. I think taxes are for the things that cannot be split individually, although there is scope for variation.

So street lighting has to be paid for by tax - you can't opt out of using it. Same with defence. Roads need to be kept up centrally, but they could prioritise lanes and usage based on the amount of tax spent.

Schools are the perfect example of something I can opt out of and should therefore get a discount on my taxes.

Just 3 from a socialist perspective would be great. I have read Friedman and Hayek. I also regularly read conservative historians.

Socialism's main tool is capitalism. Its contradictions are evident.

I've never read a book dedicated to computing, yet I know more about that than many people will learn in a lifetime - the same goes for accountancy.

I don't need to read a book dedicated to a single subject to have an understanding of it.
