Yeah, I know. I just don't see the point of it. If you punch someone inside the box you should be sent off, of course, but why a penalty? Doesn't make sense to me. Likewise with a ball going out of play, it's not like you're denied a clear goal scoring opportunity.

Because it's a foul, and with a foul follows a free kick, and free kicks are taken from where the foul happens, not where the ball was at the time of the foul. Inside the penalty area, you get a penalty. It's really quite easy and understandable.
