OMT - SPURS vs Vitesse

No one in front to pass to and having to keep an on winks behind him.
That midfield was neither fish nor fowl, really can't see what we hoped to achieve tonight.

I suspect we just wanted a solid showing and also to give a chance to some of our fringe to step-up...achieved solidity at least imo

Tonight helped confirm, if anyone was in any doubt, that we are a SQUAD in transition. However the defence was reasonably ok (esp Tanganga) and if you:

- replace Winks with Sarr
- bring in a CF
- replace Dele with someone who cares (or buy another CM and move GLC into the no 10 role)

...then the team would have looked a lot, lot better tonight. So thats just 2 signings this summer.

There's still a big gap between Lloris and Gollini (solution: Sam Johnstone on a free) and we could do either another decent CB, but we should be able to have 90%+ of the transition done by the start of next season

Really? We've been getting done by West Ham when they've used those tactics for years, even when we were REALLY good...
Yep
We’re not as good as we were but we’re defending much better now than we have for about 4 years
And the for once the expectation is on them
And they haven’t been successful in the league with their set pieces much this season. Europe just shows up poor defences

Like I said, we have a better win record with Son up front than Kane. So when Son plays up front, something is working right.

How often do you recall neither Kane or Son playing up front? It’s a handful of games, mainly low priority cup games. Yes I’m an ideal world we would have this magical third striker for such occassions, but management have obviously decided budget is better off spent elsewhere…..
Could you show those stats? The only stats I've seen is comparing with and without Kane since 2014 - 2020 and there's a 13-14% drop off in the games won.

Hopefully Scarlett starts to fill out his frame quickly as that will dictate how soon he is ready to play more and have an impact.

At least this 11 got a game together under their belt as they will need to all start again at burnley in the league cup next week.

The burnley game comes with just two days rest after wham and the utd game comes again with just two days rest after burnley. At least burnley will also make wholesale changes and not treat the game like a CL final.

Expected us to be disjointed and we definitely were.

Launching long balls towards Scarlett (who I thought did OK under the circumstances) and even worse towards Markanday is just laughable.

Hopefully this gamble from Nuno pays off. Credit to him for his bravery. But we also looked clueless at times, that's not a good look even though somewhat understandable.

For a 17 year old that as you say hasn't filled out his frame yet I think he looks good physically. Put himself about and caused issues with what was at times abysmal service. Hopefully these games give him some basis for development even though he's not getting much joy on the pitch. Still happy to see him get these starts and minutes.

A lot of work to be done for this 11 to start looking like a cohesive unit. If Burnley stand off us it might be easier for them in that game, but still. Both when defending and attacking (or trying to) there were so many things missing.

Agreed, it was a good sign that he tangled with their centre backs many times but never once went down hurt.
When he was fouled in the box for the "penalty shout" the defender came away with a twisted knee... then 5 minutes later the centre back twisted his knee fighting with Scarlett. So it seems he is very sturdy for a child.

As someone said last night, having a limited footballer like Chris Wood or some similar physical unit would have improved our performance no end. Nothing against Scarlett, but he doesnt look close to being ready for PL or European football yet. We should sign a more senior CF in Jan (20-23 year old with at least 1-2 seasons of top flight football would be fine) and then Scarlett on loan to get some experience
