New Striker or New Stadium?

None of Bale, King or Modric were world class when we signed them. You can argue that VdV was world class if you want, I don't think so and I don't much care to debate it.

We've rarely been able to sign outright world class players anyway. We must keep signing players with the potential to develop into that world class player and hope that we occasionally can pick up someone like Berba, VdV or Lloris who some will argue were world class when we signed them because we were smarter than other clubs. Both Berba and Lloris signed for us when we weren't qualified for the CL though. The point still remains the same as it is.

agreed we need to develop top players into world class players, but that doesnt change the fact that we desperately need a top striker now.

with Ade at the ANC and Defoe injured - our options are just ridiculously thin for a side sitting fourth in the PL.

Get a striker in, qualify for CL, get better players in, build a stadium, re-qualify for CL. It can be a self perpetuating upward spiral. Arse have been doing it for years(and even cope with losing a virtual team of top class players). Without a financial windfall from a sheik, tycoon etc it is the only way to progress.

To fail to make CL three years running could well see the beginning of a downward spiral it will be difficult to reverse. No CL money, no sponsorship, no stadium, players leaving, midtable mediocrity.

It seems to me that to invest now in a quality striker is a minimal risk given the above risk/reward scenario.

if you were to look at our financial reports from the season we was in the CL (well more the season after) you'd see that most of the extra money was eaten up by increased player wages/bonuses and what not - unless you have the match day revenue/extra sponsorship that comes with a stadium (like Arsenal) you cannot use the CL as a springboard from which to grow - especially when you have Manchester United/City and Chelsea with much bigger resources, we can't aim to compete financially with these teams we have to aim for Arsenal and the battle for 4th - risking our financial security at this moment is not viable - the scenario you propose above is not in anyway based in reality

King - Vertonghen. Check (mostly because Verts is fit more often then King was)

Modric - Dembele. Check (our system has changed and Dembele is as good for this system as Modric was for our previous)

DVD (LoL) - Dempsey + Sig. Check. (Have contributed to more goals/assists than VDV last season already)

You can't replace quality with lower quality, luckily that's not what we're doing for the most part.

NSIS.

AVB says he's not injured and he'll play tomorrow.

Granted he could be lying, but it would be a pretty stupid lie if it is.

what are you proposing exactly? we go out and sign a 20 mil (ball park figure) striker, in January, in the hope that he secures us CL football which will allow us to cover the cost of bringing him in?

Ade will be back sooner rather than later. Defoe is fine by the reports and Dempsey is a striker by AVB's words at least. We can also play Sig or Holtby in the hole with a lone striker up front.

We're not really short on options, as AVB has said so many times his throat is sore. If we can get a top class striker of course that would be good, but those aren't easy to come by and we're not desperate.

Exactly that. It is called building for the future. If we had bid 25m for Moutinho then where was that money coming from?

and remind me what Ade and Defoe's combined scoring rate was in the last 7 games.

it isn't called building for the future it's called gambling money you haven't yet got in the hope that everything works out well. something Im glad we're not going to be doing anytime soon, it's very much the same kind of attitude Leeds Utd had a decade or so a go - now look at where they are

(beating us in the cup lolz)

By your reasoning we shouldnt sign anyone ever again

That's not at all what he said. We shouldn't spend money we haven't got in the hope that it might pay off. Signing a player is always a gamble, but at the very least do it with money you can afford to lose. Building a stadium gives you an asset that will still be there 20 years from now (if not we hopefully have insurance), a player could get injured or turn to brick tomorrow.

So now we're going to just change the subject... again...

If you just want to have a moan and you're not interested in a discussion you should just go on twitter or something.
