Europa League - Round of 32: Fiorentina (ITA)

Re: The Race for Europe/6th Place

Looks like all the Welsh sides went out in the first round.

Bangor City lost 8-0 on aggregate to a somewhat average Icelandic team and Glenavon from N. Ireland are probably amongst the worst teams I've ever seen play against my team over here. Didn't they used to be half decent?

Re: The Race for Europe/6th Place

Aaaand Motherwell just crashed out against said Icelandic side, Stjarnan F.C. :ross:

This is the winning goal in overtime, worth a watch!

Re: The Race for Europe/6th Place

Hey, Icelander, bit of an off topic question for you.

Are there any young up and coming potential new top class Icelandic players around? (Eidur class)

With Sig gone I would like to see Spurs sign another Icelandic player (if he's good enough of course).

Good question. We kind of hit our "golden generation" with players around Gylfi's age group. Guys like Kolbeinn Sigþórsson, who is leaving Ajax, most likely going to QPR - Aron Jóhannsson, who plays for AZ and decided to play for the U.S. in the World Cup - and Alfreð Finnbogason, who joined Real Sociedad this summer, amongst others.

I think the three most popular names would be Hörður Björgvin Magnússon at Juventus, Hjörtur Hermannsson at PSV and Albert Guðmundsson at Heerenveen.

Magnusson (21) is a centre back, but can also play as a left back. After playing for their youth team, he was loaned out to Spezia last year, but recently signed a new contract with Juventus and was then loaned out to Cesena, who are playing in Serie A next season. Look for him to break into our national team this year. Oh, and he also did this: http://vimeo.com/67509576

Hermannson (19) is also a centre back who plays for the PSV youth team. He's captained our youth national teams and played his first games in our top division at the age of 16, before joining PSV in 2012. He'd already been on trial with many clubs, including A.C. Milan, who reportedly would've signed him, if he'd been from Italy. Allegedly. He's tall, nearly 190 cm, so hopefully he'll turn out the be a good one, especially since our national team desperately lacks good centre halves.

Gudmundsson (17) is probably the best known of the bunch, since he shares a name with his great-grandfather who was a known footballer back in the day with Arsenal, Nancy and A.C. Milan. He was also Iceland's first professional football player. Gudmundsson is a no. 10 or a striker and plays for Heerenveen, hopefully he'll get some chances this season with their top team, not just the youth side, although he's still only 17 so there's no rush yet! Arsenal courted him pretty heavily, he was regularly on trial there and had a contract offer on the table before choosing Heerenveen. Before you get your hopes up though, he's a lifelong Gooner, along with his entire family, and has stated many times in local interviews that he's determined to play for them someday!

Anyways, that about sums it up. I don't think we have anybody in Eidur's class coming up anytime soon, or even Gylfi's for that matter. Eidur's talents were there for the world to see at a very early age, but these lads still have time to grow and go on to make a name for themselves.

Glentoran were a decent side in N. Ireland and regularly qualify for European completion, Glenavon were at their best in the 1990's and do not have a good record in Europe, not even in the European Song Contest.

Re: The Race for Europe/6th Place

Real Sociedad de Fútbol (ESP) - Aberdeen FC (SCO)

Griezmann will be cup tied :-"

FC Krasnodar could be the dark horse this year. The club was formed in 2008 by a russian billionaire (he's got no less than $8.2 billion in his pocket) and now they have 10 internationals in the squad.
A long trip to a terrible place against a relatively tough team, it would be an awful draw if we'd get them.

Re: The Race for Europe/6th Place

Zenit usually plays weaker away and it was their first match of the season. Also they suffered some unluck and doubtful red card.
I don't think anything was decided. I reckon Zenit will win 2nd leg with two goals advantage.

Personally i think they lost on purpose in an attempt to deceive the opposition into thinking they're a weak team. AVB is a genius i tell you.
