Europa League - Round of 32: Fiorentina (ITA)

Re: The Race for Europa League

I like the idea, but realistically we shouldn't have a priority competition until after Christmas. That's when we'll know how our top four challenge is going and we should easily qualify for the Europa knockouts without too much hassle.

The Christmas period of games is brutal, and is usually when you know how your season is going to end up looking.

Spot on, it's all about squad management early season. Got to be fresh at the business end of the season. Not suffer burnout just as things get interesting like we did under AVB.
EL is going to be even harder to win this year with the added prize of CL place. More likely that the CL dropouts will take the comp more seriously.

Re: The Race for Europa League - Playoff Draw Friday at 12

Does winning plenty of group games every year against some half-decent but not great sides still push up our coefficient much or can we only really improve it by beating better ranked teams like Lyon etc. in the later stages?

I'm just thinking about the day when we get back in the CL ;)

It's not a question of increasing our coefficient so much as maintaining it. That's the important thing. But it makes no difference whether we play Barcelona or Bournemouth. We would get the same number of points for a win against either and the same number of point for each stage of the competition that we progress to.

Re: The Race for Europa League - Playoff Draw Friday at 12

My hope is for Molde or Rosenborg from Norway. Will be pretty easy opponents and not to long trip.

Are Rosenborg no good these days?

Used to be a dangerous, Champions League seasoned opponent.

Re: The Race for Europa League - Playoff Draw Friday at 12

St Johnstone, HJK, Molde, Rosenborg, Rio Ave or Lokeren with the away leg first would be my picks if they all get through of course

The quality of the opposition is not a factor in accumulating coefficient points. Last year we got a decent haul of points, despite not progressing past the last 16, mainly due to winning all our group matches. There are however bonus points allocated for reaching the later rounds.

For the current season we are 19th in UEFA's rankings. Next season we should move ahead of Inter Milan (who lose the points from their CL winning season) and AC Milan (who aren't in European competition this season). However, several teams just below us are competing in this season's CL and therefore likely to get more coefficient points than us (Basel, Zenit, Emirates Marketing Project, Bayer Leverkusen). I think we are probably competing with Lyon for 20th spot. The following season we will lose the points we earned during our CL season so, for the sake of our ranking, we could do with amassing plenty of points this season and next.

No they are a bit **** now really.
After legendary Nils Arne Eggen, theyve had about 12 managers in 12 years.

Their success was based on continuity and a strong club spirit, but now its mostly chaos. Molde is quite a bit stronger nowadays.

Re: The Race for Europa League - Playoff Draw Friday at 12

Hoping for St. Johnstone but more than likely we will get Dynamo Moscow or someone of the like tricky tie and long travel it is Spurs so.........

Re: The Race for Europa League - Playoff Draw Friday at 12

Re: The Race for Europa League - Playoff Draw Friday at 12

Can we not have a new thread for Europa league this season? kinda hard to determine where I need to commence reading from.

We'll see when/if we make it there. First there's a playoff ;)

For this thread you can start here.

Both Molde and Rosenborg have lost on aggregate today, so no Norwegian teams in Europe this season.

Re: The Race for Europa League - Playoff Draw Friday at 12

Glad to see Hudd and Livermore through. Good times for Hull City Tigers.

Quite a few decent teams managed to scrape into the seeded group, thankfully.

They usually divide the teams into smaller groups before the draw is made, we'll see tomorrow.

Two additional conditions this season:

Ukrainian and Russian teams can't be drawn against each other.
Israeli teams must play their home games in a neutral venue (outside Israel).

Re: The Race for Europa League - Playoff Draw Friday at 12

Mainz really bottled it. German media likes to talk about how their league is the most competitive and balanced league, hence the best in the world, but their 7th best team can't even beat no name Greek team I've never heard of.

Re: The Race for Europa League - Playoff Draw Friday at 12

Not the best and not the worst group of possible opponents. Hopefully we'll play 2nd leg at home. I hold my fists for it [-o<

Tottenham received just under €6m from UEFA's financial distribution for last season's Europa League. That was €0.5 more than the previous season despite being knocked out one round earlier. The main reasons for the increase were our 100% record in last season's group stages and there being fewer English association teams to share the market pool with in the knockout rounds.

Full list for 2013/14 is here: http://www.uefa.com/MultimediaFiles/Download/OfficialDocument/uefaorg/Finance/02/11/95/44/2119544_DOWNLOAD.pdf

Spurs will probably be the last English team in the foreseeable future to start the EL at the play-off round. UEFA have already announced that from next season more teams will receive automatic entry to the group stages. In future it's likely that 2 English teams will get direct entry to the group stages and the other team will start, as currently, in the 3rd qualifying round.
