Ratings Vs Notlob

re Bale on the left - maybe my memory is a little hazy here but im sure in the beginning half of the season we had Bale/Lennon/Adebayor and VdV all freely interchanging and swapping about during attacking play (maybe not as freely as im painting it but they certainly weren't rigid by any means)

i think this whole Bale sticking to the left thing has become a bit of spacegoat these past feww weeks

Thought Rose was shocking today to be honest.

The thing with Rose is that he has been little game time and now is expected to perform straight away in a team struggling for form. He should be given a little slack given the fact we wouldnt let him go out on loan to improve and without a reserve team have left him with nothing to prepare him.

In all honesty it's not his natural position and it really shows. His reading of the game was all over the place, his touch shoddy. I'm not convinced with him as a reserve LB. I'll give him a chance but he looks like the weak link in our side. Really missed Ekotto today I thought.

Friedel 7 - Some solid saves, but also a keystone cop moment.

Walker 7 - Thought the first 20 minutes were the best I'd seen him play for Spurs. Petrov is a tricky customer but he let him get blind side twice which knocked his score down.

Gallas 7 - Lucky not to give away a penalty in the first half

Kaboul 7 - Best game for some time

Rose 5 - Out of his depth I thought

Lennon 8 - Good to have him back playing like that. Very involved and direct.

Sandro 7 - Another fine display. Only negative is that he does get a little carried away and give away needless fouls in dangerous areas.

Modric 9 - Absolutely brilliant performance, capped with a great goal.

Bale 7 - Worked hard and kept trying things when it wasn't coming off. Also quite involved.

VDV 8 - Played further forward and what a difference it made. His little first time flicks passes as midfielders ran BEYOND him (rather than him dropping deeper than them) really helped us vary the tempo in our play. Hopefully he'll continue to play further forward for the remaining games.

Ade 7 - To be honest, he gets +1 for each goal otherwise I'd have given him a 5! He was dreadful today, but fudge it he scored two goals and if a striker does that and we win you can't be too harsh right?!

I'm no Ekotto fan but one thing Ekotto is, is a bloody good footballer. It's Ekotto as a defender I don't rate. Ekotto's first touch, close control etc is superb and for me where Rose really looked poor was that he struggled to bring the ball down, or he'd over run it etc. Makes me realise just how good our team is technically. The amount of poor balls that are played to Modric, VDV, Bale etc and yet they make something of them or we retain possession. Ekotto does that too, but Rose simply doesn't have the ability to be able to do that. And that doesn't make Rose a bad player, it just shows how far we've come!

I think that's a fair analysis. Disco certainly has tendencies to switch off for sure. He is a fantastic footballer on the ball. I often think he'd actually make a decent left winger.

The Pleatster said the other day that BAE has the best pass of any LB in the premiership. Again, that doesn't necessarily add up to a good defender.

I couldn't agree more there. It's a shame we started messing around with the formation as much as we did. Perhaps Lennon being out for a while gave us a problem on the right side, but that doesn't mean we need to fudge the rest of the team up as well.

Ade's second goal came from Bale who drifted infield. I know why Bale drifts infield and Lennon also drifts infield. Its just how it is.

I dont disagree overall, but given that we have no natural left back cover at all and that Rose had to "do a job" there, I think we should allow him a bit of slack (which is a bit easier in a game we won though). I am not sure where he fits in overall, he seems to be unhappy with a bit part role but hasnt really got a position to call his own.

Fixed.. Well in my opinion. Bale needs to realise when to cut inside and when not to. Some of the time he is cutting inside there are a large number of bodies in the middle and he becomes ineffective as a result.

If there is enough space in the middle, then by all means feel free to come inside and run at the centre backs.

I certainly support the lad in the ground, but in a forum I can express my honest opinions on him as a footballer. I do understand where your coming from though

The difference between madness and genius is measured by sucess.

Thats the learning curve though isnt it? When you learn you will have to balance when to come in and when not to (like you say). He has perfected that but he will in time - its just trial and error.

So true  To be honest, a formation is dictated by when you DON'T have the ball. When a team has the ball I would expect the team to be fluid with players roaming out of position.

What I'd really love to see us do more when we are dominating possession is have one of the centre halves run the ball out of defence and give it and continue their run. A late arriving centre half causes havoc in almost any attack.

Yeah it is. In my view he should stick to the left a bit more, so that when he does cut inside it is more of a surprise.

Though i am fine as long as he is learning at it.

I do not see why we do not just set out as a 4-3-3 seeing as Rafa drops in most of the game and Lennon and Bale play beside Ade on the break,

We always seem to set out as a 4-4-1-1 when really its just an un-official 4-3-3.

He made a few bad passes and mistakes, but TBH, he worked tirelessly and supported the attack well. I also think he defended better than benny at times.
Interesting because I thought he was shocking defensively. Left his man on numerous occasions and got beaten on the outside several times. I like Rose's commitment and willingness to get on the overlap but he isn't a patch on Ekotto as a full back.
