Tom Carroll

What the actual bleep? We let Mason go for this??

Edit - To be fair, he may well be more effective in the squad now Wanyama is here...just wish Mason would have had the have to play in a team with Wanyama too:(

Wow. I thought we'd move him on this summer. Didn't see a new contract in the pipeline, although, having said that, it *is* only a three-year deal, unusual for us - he's only going to have two years left on it by the end of this season, so it could just be that (as @billyiddo suggested) we're angling for more money when we try to move him on next July/August.

I think he's decent to have as a squad filler - I also think he could be quite good in a more advanced role, if he was given that chance. And he's an academy boy, so I think some of the stick he's getting is unwarranted, even given his limitations as a footballer. But I can't see him being here long-term, tbh. In my mind, that backup CM role is already a bit full with Sissoko and Wanyama spotting for Dier and Dembele, and that's without considering Alli dropping back at times. Beyond those players, we have Winks and Carroll (not including Onomah as he seems to have been used mainly in the CAM position so far) - it's telling in this regard that Winks got a longer contract than Carroll did, and they seem like very similar players. On the whole, then, Tom's looking like the 4th or 5th option for Dembele's spot in midfield (behind Dembele himself, then Sissoko, then possibly either Wanyama or Alli, and then probably Winks). Not promising, from that perspective.

i like and rate Carroll but i didn't see this coming, thought he would at the very best get the season to try and earn a new contract but ultimately not get enough minutes to make the grade and walk away on a free next summer.

could just be a move by the the club to ensure they get a transfer fee, but hopefully that's nothing more than a bit cynicism and he steps up and gets the chance to show what he can do

I don't see how he will get any game time at all with our squad now.

Must be to get some money next summer as perhaps in the last window suitors knew he had one year left on his contract.

I can't see how he can play at all, even in the gillingham game so I'd expect him to leave on loan soon.

Really not a big deal, previous form tells us we give contract extensions to players sold not long after aswell as crucial members of the squad.

Giving an extension is an indicator of nothing, except that his transfer value has now increased....

chances of the club getting much money for him if he has a year out of the side would be pretty low id have thought, factoring in the wages they'd be paying out as well im not sure if it'd be worth the new contract if the sole intention is just to move him on - ive always heard the club rate him very highly but his physicality has held him back from adapting to Premier League football, could just be a last roll of the dice from the club in the hope he can adapt

The game against Gillingham might give us an idea of where he is placed in the squad and what chances he might get this season

Guinness and Steak a\with potato's should build this young man up nicely. Sometimes the old methods are the best.

I like Tom Carroll and approve of this signing. Great to see Spurs pushing their academy products forward and will only serve to encourage those coming up through the ranks.

He plays the ball well and he's got a centre of gravity somewhere near his ankles, letting him pivot, pass or stay nicely in control when under pressure. If he could add the dimension of taking set pieces well, he'd be a pocket Eriksen.

When you look at the big, rangy midfield beasts we've added in Wanyama and Sissoko, he offers a different element to the game. There'll be days when that's what's needed.

Good news for me, he offers us something different and i hope we get the chance to see him more often.

Have a sneaking suspicion he might play a part this season. A lot of players ahead of him. But his passing is crisp, and with Bentaleb gone, only Winks and Carol are sharp passing players.

I think one of our weaknesses is our passing. Compared to elite sides, our passing can be a little wanting.

Really pleased he's signed a contract, another youth graduate who's good enough for the PL.

English premium + homegrown status + Levy

It's all good

The Carroll's situation at Spurs is really puzzling. He has never been convincing in most of the matches he has played for us and is error-prone. Yet we extend his contract and let go players like Mason and Chadli who have done much better for us. Just can't see the logic in this.

Maybe Mason and Charlie weren't happy to be back up players and Carroll is.

The way Carroll played yesterday is the way I would love to see him play in the league.

Could not agree more, he is a lovely player and he gives us something we lack and along side Winks last night we saw him control the CM and he was always moving and looking for the next pass.
