I think that all industry and mining would be tickety boo if Thatcher hadn't come along. We would still be the industrial powerhouse that built the world's largest empire and I'd probably be think typing this very message from a hover keyboard whilst sipping from bone china, right this very instant if Thatcher hadn't come along.

She was never afraid to make unpopular decisions that needed to be made, and she had that arrogant determination and self belief to carry on doing the right thing even when those around her were starting to lose their resolve. But she never seemed to grasp that you only had to be that way when unpopular decisions needed to be made. Her and Churchill were similar in the fact that she made a good "war" time leader (not literally in this case, but more when all hell is breaking loose) but not such a good peace time leader. There was a time for listening to your advisors and she didn't.

That said, I'd have Thatcher over anything since. Major, Blair, Brown, Cameron/Clegg have all been simply awful.

Strip their assets = world financial crisis over IMO

I think to succeed when she did, she was never going to be. Bit like why most top sportsman actually aren't that nice as people either. Neither was Churchill apparently. Wish we had her (or someone like her) now though. This country is seriously fudged and no one has the balls to do anything about it. Thatcher didn't care about being unpopular, or the reputation of the party. She wanted to do what she felt was right for Britain above all else, including herself. Got to admire that even if you didn't agree with her methods or policies. Now we're left with a bunch of drippy PR cardboard cut outs trying not to offend anyone for fear of losing the next election.

Can you imagine Thatcher bending over and taking it from the EU like Blair and Brown did?!

And therein lies the problem with modern politics... The best person for the job will probably never actually get the job ever again, what with celebrity politics. Imagine Maggie trying to get in now. Brown could only get elected by backing the popular candidate and then stabbing him in the back whilst bullying the rest of his party. I honestly wonder whether we'll ever see a truly exceptional Prime Minister in Britain again.

Don't agree, if Thatcher could do what she did massively against the odds thirty odd years ago then it's doable again for a good politician.

Is it just me getting old or do modern politicians lack gravitas?

A lot of it's the media's fault. They walk on eggshells now because some know nothing journalist with an ego will give their opinion in a rag and the masses will follow. Perception is more powerful than the truth it seems.

The left wing media have a lot to answer for, they really do. I've lost count of the amount of people in their 20's and below that I've heard slagging off Thatcher. I ask them why they don't like her and they'll say a lot without saying much. I then ask what policies of hers were so terrible? They'll almost always mention the miners or the poll tax. I'll then ask them to explain in more details about what exactly she did that was wrong and their response is usually "duh......". And these are the sort of thick pricks voting in the elections.....

No mate, it's not just you, this is actually the point I'm trying to make. The politicians we are faced with are fluffy charicatures of politicians as they are groomed to be acceptable to the widest demographic possible.

That's why I don't think you'll ever see a proper politician again. The best person for the job will be over looked as they are not the best person for the public eye.
 
The most important thing for a politician is making sure you get re-elected. Politics these days seems to be mostly about pointing out what everyone else is doing wrong, but very little about what you would do differently to make things better.

There's thick pricks on both sides, people who adore Thatcher without living through her politics of spite, people who were predicting a return to miner's strikes and power cut rotas if Labour ever got in without even realising it was Heath who presided over that.

Even a broken clock is right twice a day (granted not LED ones :eek:).

I don't think I've ever met anyone who is "pro" Thatcher who is in their 20's to be honest. She's almost universally hated!
 
Anyone who dislikes Thatcher should read her memoirs. They're especially enlightening with regard to the 'poll tax'.

From what i can gather often the best person for a job does not always get it it is often the person whose face fits most.
 
Im in my 40's:eek: i lived through thatcher but i have been thinking recently maybe i got lucky, my mum worked at the council my dad on the building sites and i started out with him on them as well. It was slow but we were lucky we always managed to get work. I lived in a council flat with them till i moved to my own digs.

I sometimes wonder if i had been born in the north if my politics would be different. Really now the only thing i have to say on politics is that i think the EU is the single biggest fudging mistake this country has made and i hope to GHod one day i will see us out of it. Other then that i really see no different from any of the parties we have in this country.

Obviously im never going to be a liberal voter but the worst thing about the expenses scandal is how politicans who were meant to be honest were as corrupt as the tories who i always assumed skimmed a little off the top.

And I don't mean something obscure like inventing fags or whatever

I mean your maniac power crazed leader - your Hitler, Stalin, Pol Pot, Saddam Hussein, Gadaffi, Idi Amin types. Kim Jong Il is gone. Who else is still out there? No-one is springing to mind.

And don't just say Obama or something. Who are the proper comic book freak despot leaders nowadays? Is Mugabe still struggling along?
