Mousa Dembele

Re: Official - Mousa Dembele

Thought he done okay. We definitely looked better once him and Lamela came on, although that's not difficult when you're replacing Paulihno and Townsend.

Re: Official - Mousa Dembele

Says a lot when i got to go back to August to find a thread about him............sorry to be a troll but how many times did he give the ball away yesterday when he came on for the second half.

The most frustrating player to play for Spurs i guarantee when he moves on he be scoring for fun.... for who ever!!!

Re: Official - Mousa Dembele

It's the role he's asked to play no doubt. He's strong but doesn't have an eye for a pass so he slows play down. Put him further up the pitch where he's not expected to be the architect and he probably would do alright, though he has admitted to not like shooting

Re: Official - Mousa Dembele

Shocking revelations in every way... but very enlightening on the conundrum that is Moussa Dembele.

If this is the type of motivation that he needs to play, then his head is in the wrong place. Plus the same things we see on the pitch, he repeats on the training ground.

... the sooner we get rid of Dembele, the better.

Former Tottenham forward Les Ferdinand has made the stunning revelation that coaches at the club used to motivate Mousa Dembele by telling him he could earn a move away if he played well.
The Belgian midfielder played 90 minutes as Mauricio Pochettino's side lost 1-0 to Besiktas in Istanbul.
But Ferdinand felt the 27-year-old could have offered more, admitting he struggled to motivate the Belgian midfielder while working as a coach in north London.

Speaking on ITV, he said: 'We used to watch him in (Tottenham's) training - every time he gets the ball he wants someone to challenge him and he gets past them but just passes it sideways.
'He's got great ability you just don't see enough of it. He leaves you frustrated because you know he's got more and you want to see it.
'We used to say to him: "You're the next person to go to Real Madrid, you're the next guy to go to Real Madrid from this club".
'He can get forward. He's got a great shot on him you just never see it.'

Former Celtic boss Gordon Strachan also agreed that although Dembele possessed talent, he was often a frustrating figure to watch.
He said: 'The game looks like it's so easy for him. He's big and strong, he's got everything.
'He should be a guy who you're saying is man of the match maybe 20 per cent of the time he plays, but he doesn't even get a game every week
.'

Re: Official - Mousa Dembele

...Except that obviously didn't motivate him either.

I don't think motivation is his problem. His work rate has always been solid.

It's just a lack of footballing intelligence. He's actually quite Jenas-like in that he has all the technique in the world, but is incapable of applying it to any useful purpose.

Exactly this. Has mastered the complex stuff but can't comprehend the basic fundamentals (I.e when should I pass this ball and where should I pass it to)

Re: Official - Mousa Dembele

I actually think its a confidence thing with this guy, seems a bit withdrawn. Maybe he doesn't believe how good he could be?
Would like to think Poch could find a way/postion to get the best out of him, hes certainly a better option than Lamela in that right hand side position!
But yesterday he seemed to be too keen to impress at times as if he felt on trial.

i think he's not enjoying his football under poch, who system is much more intense. he looked in control and had his head up with sandro alongside him, i think he needs just that, an old fashion dm working with him as a unit so that he can take chances going forwards.

That's a strange comment I think. Jenas was very good at applying his technique to a useful purpose. I think people have too easily forgotten how good our Carrick, Jenas central midfield partnership was under Jol and it wasn't all about Carrick.

Re: Official - Mousa Dembele

How did he perform there? Was he scoring more etc.. or just more involved etc. Was he doing stuff that he no longer does?

The key difference I see in his time now and his earlier career is his decisiveness. Whereas before Dembele would be more willing to try a shot or a difficult pass now he more content with retaining possession. I think some of this has to do with his time under AVB whose mantra was to keep the ball no matter what. If he wants to progress any further he needs to snap out of that mindset and trust his own ability more. If Poch and his cohorts can't help players like Dembele, Lamela and Townsend on their decision making I will be more than a little disappointed.

On a side note, Ferdinand is a dingdong for making training ground stufff like that public IMO. I wish these ex-coach types would just **** off and play golf and keep their mouths shut.

I think it's more that he suited AVB, whose system was more about control. And therefore if you have a player that can retain the ball really well in deeper positions and establish a platform for the team to move up as a unit, he would suit it really well. Under Poch, needing to move the ball forward a bit more quickly, he's not suited to the deeper position but can play quite well further forward.

Only then he lacks the killer instict to contribute enough goals from that position. Hence he isn't starting material at the moment.

Re: Official - Mousa Dembele

I thought he looked good in periods in the more advanced role last night. I remember away at Saudi Sportswashing Machine last season in that 4-0 he looked good in the wide right position, maybe there is something in playing him further forward....
