***TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR v Chelski OMT***

It's not been forgotten how Blackburn bought a title twenty years ago.

Once they slip back to mediocrity people unfamiliar with the circumstances will look at this period and wonder why. Some research will reveal everything.

We are mediocre now compared to what we were in the 60's. Do people realize how much we spent on the Double-winning side, and preface our own accomplishments with 'yeah, but they spent a lot to get there'?

It isn't realistic to think that football fans will remember Chelsea's spending as opposed to their success. And it isn't realistic to think that people will give us a 'star of virtuous living' for living 'within our means' and foregoing success for the past decade.

By all means, support our lack of spending or investment with Leeds-related quips or acceptance of the fact that our owners just aren't the investing type. Just don't paint it as 'virtuous': there will ultimately be nothing virtuous attached to our history of the 1990's/2000's: just a note detailing our decline into mediocrity relative to the likes of Chelsea and Arsenal.

Oh well, overall as expected, but with quite a few positives: Kane, Bentaleb, Mason, Fazio, Davies, several spells of good, quick passing and movement, and overall a good work ethic. Like Everton, I like the signs I'm seeing - I hope we might have turned the corner here.

This. Bentaleb had great footwork and closed down relentlessly from what I could see: Ditto Kane. The rest, not sure given that I only picked up the game from the 50th minute onward, but I'll take your word for it.

Vertongen looking like a schoolgirl vs Remy, not picking up Drogba on the 2nd goal which, in his position, is his one and only job! We really need some proper no-nonsense DEFENDERS, that puts their bodies on the line and fuc*ing blasts the ball out of the stadium if necessary! We really don't have any of that kind!

Well we were beaten by a top team who in my opinion are going to run away with the league so thats one thing. Just a shame we gave away a couple of soft goals which gave us no chance. There were good periods in the game with some quick passing but aside from the start of the game we didn't look like we were really going to cause them to many problems. It seemed like a "nearly" performance. We got into decent positions but picked the wrong pass at the wrong time or the ball didn't quite run for us when we needed to.

A heavy loss again but overall i though it was certainly a step up from the other losses we have seen this season and there is certainly positive signs there.

Happy we started with a wonky 4411, Lennon on the right. Rather than that turgid 4231 sideways passing rubbish.

Not happy Lennon was switched to the left to look after Ivanovic, that killed our only bit of width and we just kept ploughing into their middle head first.

Good passing at times, impressed with Cheatski's clinical finishing prowess.

Not happy that Lennon didn't track Hazard for the first.
Not happy that Lloris gifted them the ball for the second.
Not happy that Vertonghen allowed Remy to teabag him for the third.

But happy we are progressing now the tumours have been excised from the first team.

Lamela was fairly rubbish, someone else could have been more effective... shame Chadli didn't really step up much when he came onto the pitch, thought he was a bit meh.

Fair enough. Just think we need pace and energy on the flanks given our preference for inside forwards, and that is best achieved by a Walker - Rose combo.

given how bad our defence has been id take a steady ben davies. especially when walker is back. i thought davies looked reasonable going forwards today to be fair too. its never easy to find space against chelsea.

I personally think our defence would be better served by signing a world-class DM who can sit in front of the two CBs and dictate the play from deep, but again, it's just an opinion, same as yours. Eminently fair.

Vertoghen, Chirches, and Lloris all had pretty poor performances. When 3 of your back 5 play badly it will usually only end one way.

I though Chelsea pressed us relentlessly in the first half and turned over possession close to our goal repeatedly. They just sat back in the 2nd half and let us have it, content to pick us off on the break. Saved their energy really. Gah.

They done to us what we did to Everton I suppose.

No offence Steff, but I hope you're not a gambling man, you'd be skint

I hate gambling mate. You're right. I would be skinny. There again, if I was a gambling man, I'd do it with a different mind-set mate. I watch us as a supporter first and realist at the final whistle.

On top of all that we've now got to contend with Clevelands ****ing avatar.

And this West Ham Cnut on TalkSport can **** right off too.

If we could defend like they did, learn from them, and pass and move the ball as we did today, we'd be a very decent team. As it is we are work in progress.

Well done to the lads. Shame we couldn't take one of our early chances and shame we made the mistakes that gave them the quick second goal.

Onwards and upwards after a disappointing result and decent performance.

Agree with all.
Inverted wingers will cause Poch's demise.
Look at the chances we created with Lennon on the right, especially Kane's header from Lennon's cross.
Mind you I would like Lennon and our other wingers, especially Lamela, to get on the training pitch and work on their weaker feet, whilst going around the defender on either side. I remember Waddle doing this and turning into an outstanding player from a poor start at the Club.
Also, Poch needs to stick with players who are doing well instead of making formulaic subs I.e Lennon after 60 mins even though Lamela is a waste of space.

To be fair, they didn't need to play football in the second half, so parking the bus and hitting on the counter is a valid tactic, especially when you have the defensive ability they do.

As for the team shape, I don't quite see the wonky 442/4411 thing. All game we went into a 2431 with the four being incredibly flat. Eriksen and Lamela both played quite freely at times and combined through the centre on more than one occasion. We definately looked a way more fluid team.

I was really impressed with how we camped out in their half for a large period before their third. We made sure that they couldn't break out and although we couldn't score, it was encouraging to see us do it to a quality side. How many times have we been at 2-0 and still being hemmed in our own half?
