AVB - I want him out now!

Why not? Its quarter of a season!

Surely we'd be able to muster at least one half-decent performance so far?

I mean we'd surely start to see signs of life from what is a very talented squad?
Quarter of a season is a very significant portion of a season !

because a 100m investment - is just that an INVESTMENT - you don't write something off because you don't see results right away - it's long term planning

maybe you're forgetting as well that 3/4s of that investment (Capoue/Lamela/Eriksen/Chadli) is far from being considered part of the regular first team - how about you wait until the money you seem to be happy to hang AVB out to dry on has at least had a chance to show what it can do?

And that could be where the problem lies. AVB can be the best manager in the world, if the player are not good enough then you cant do anything. And thats we turn to Baldini..

The new signings have proved to be below par so far.

Depends how you look at it.

Capoue -> Parker
Eriksen -> Creativity we supposedly missed last year
Lamela -> Record signing, bags of potential
Chadli -> Dempsey

They're more than likely new blood, probably started supporting during our year in the CL and ever since then think by some divine right deserve to be in the CL every year despite simply not being good enough.

Er, no, my first game was a game when Paul Stewart scored an amazing volley.

Actually one of the most boring but exciting games I went to was the league cup final 99. I was 17. So dull for all but the last minute. I never saw Iversen run that fast ever and Nielsen's header - wow!

Anyway I went through all the lean years.

I don't think we should be in the CL every season, but to me results are the only thing that can justify football so turgid.

When the results look like they're not even going to be that great then what's the point.

If we're going to finish 5th to 9th we may as well do it by having a go in every game.

You know what thie lean years taught me? Those Nicola Berti years, those Gary Doherty, Ginger pele years???

They taught me to appreciate the quality in our squad.

Steffen Iversen used to trap a ball further than he could kick it. Now I see Lamela, Eriksen and Siggy do amazing things with a football. Our squad is the best I've ever known and it makes me mad that AVB is in charge of it wasting it's potential, it's thrilling, attacking potential and producing dire performances . We should be enjoying this time as I know football goes in cycles and we will end up with a poor squad again, but I can't enjoy it because of AVB!

i disagree, the signings haven't been below par - what they've produced overall you could make an argument for but again, when do you start appraising a player after a handful for of games for a new team in a new country?

I haven't hung him out to dry on money. Even with last seasons squad or this season's without the new signings the quality is there that should make the performances a lot more watchable and more effective

Footballers have natural instincts to move though.

You can take time to get used to what your team mates do to a perfect level but we are 11 games in and many more including cups. These guys are training every day together - there are no signs of improvement.

It's a tactic. We squeeze so high up there's no space to move

I think that it is not the high line but that many teams come to WHL and put 10 men behind the ball. We played a deeper back line under Redknapp, these teams didn't come out and attack us and we still struggled to break them down.

We play a high line away from home too but have been a lot easier on the eye, although still not as fluid as I would hope.

If this set up clicks and we start to fulfill our potential then we have a chance to push on and take a step up. I'm not sure that I have seen another suggestion on this thread for doing this that hasn't been tried and failed before.

Yeah but in the meantime while we are waiting for the new players to adapt how can't this team play good football and how come Ade isn't used to take the pressure off Soldado? Why was BAE sacked off with no LB back-up?

Lloris
Walker
Daws
Verts
Rose
Sandro
Dembele
Sig
Lennon
Townsend
Defoe

I have seen Capoue for years in France, and he'll never be as good as Parker was a couple of years ago.

Chadli I havent seen, when he played he did ok.

Lamela has potential, but for that price you get Neymar, not a kid hiding away..

Eriksen, we'll see, seems to walk around at the moment, has qualities, but top clubs decided against going for him.

Because I think that we are trying to implement a squad system where we play the same way regardless of the players that we put out.

That is obviously going to take longer to implement and for the players to get used to but should mean that we can avoid burning out after 3/4 of a season like we have countless times before.

If I was trying to build a new team, really starting from scratch with a lot of new players coming in to a whole new philosophy of what every player does with and without the ball....I'd start by making that team solid and hard to score against.

AVB has done this.

We're still in the process of phase 2 of the master plan.

We also simply cannot forget that new players are still adapting to this country on and off the field. It's not cliche to say this. It's true.

Looking specifically at the last game. I refuse to blame AVB for the misses/oppo GK.

I do credit him with setting us up to create those chances. We had a hell of a lot of chances to score on Sunday. The players missed them, not AVB.

Before the game, if I knew we would create 31 shots with 14 on target and had to guess how many we would score. I'd say 3, maybe 4 goals.

I hope we have half that many chances against City because if we do, I think we'll score. Probably more than 1.

valid questions mate, totally - BAE going to QPR on loan despite us not getting in Contreo (which i suspect was close to being done before Baines to United fell through) was bad move, no question

as for Adebayor id defo be having him more involved provided his head/heart is in the right place - not sure if we'll see it though.

valid criticisms as far as im concerned.

that team you list there - is it really that good? strong in defense but weak going forward/lacking creativity is what i imagine 99% of non Spurs supporters would say.

I hope that you don't mind but i've emailed your details to the club. We'll be sorry to see you go but GG's loss will be THFC's gain and I am sure that Baldini will be excited about having you on hand to help him avoid making such glaring mistakes in future.

Two questions

Is AVB the right man for the job? Answer - jury still out

Has AVB been a good manager this season so far? Answer- self evidently no.

We have had easy matches and are 7th. We have an abysmal goal scoring record.

If he continues along the same path for the next 8 games, we will be out of touch and he will look like a dud.

I rarely agree with you Col, but think you have got this one about right.

I wasn't an advocate of AVB's appointment. I was worried about the Chelsea fiasco. However, I do think it is too early to judge him yet despite being totally frustrated by the turgid football we are playing. Myself ( and most of the supporters I know in the real world) want to be entertained when we watch Spurs. Yes, results are important, but we are getting most annoyed with the lack of entertainment being delivered.

A lot of you think AVB is a bright young manager who will deliver both results and entertainment. I only hope you are right. Time will tell - but that time is not now.

I've been mulling over starting a thread on this for a few weeks now but maybe this is a better place for it.

I know that these two propositions are not mutually exclusive but a hypothetical question for you and everyone else.

Would you be more content playing attractive football but being a little open and finishing mid-table?

Or should we try to implement a system that may help us to continue to compete for champions league places regularly and allows us to make best use of the meagre resources compared to the teams that we are competing against?

RE Lamela. We forced Roma to sell which meant we paid over the odds for him. The hope is that once he develops we will have a Neymar esque talent (heres hoping) who cost almost £50 million.
I'm willing to reserve judgement on Chadli until he has turned out regularly for us. A player jumping on and off the treatment table and not getting a run of competitive footbal matches under his belt cannot be judged at his full potential. Thought people were over critical of him in his first few games.
Chiriches looks like he will be fine
Eriksen despite "doing little" created a record number of chances vs Saudi Sportswashing Machine

My problem is as someone else said. Soldado was immense in Spain for Valencia, he obviously has quality and yet looks bad here. There is a dimension to our play missing and AVB is responsible for adjusting it. Then again Mourinho has struggled with Eto playing as a lone forward this season, so maybe it shows what others have said, that a lone small forward cannot be efficient in this league. I personally think if AVB loses some of his cautiousness and pushes players up to support Soldado we will be fine.

Imagine if things would have been different in AVB got in Villa and Bernard like planned.

or Oscar last year.

I agree with all of that other than that small loan strikers cannot succeed in the Premier League
