No. We've just sold a player for almost a hundred million quid, and released a handful of very high earners (Gallas, Bentley, etc.)
Levy runs a tight ship, this summer is all about minimising the loss of Bale (both in a footballing and publicity standpoint) while simultaneously taking us to the next level on the field (regular top three contenders) whereupon the financing for the stadium becomes easier. He's speculating to accumulate. But he's doing it with cash the club has earned (via Bale) and not via a sugar daddy. I think it's bloody great.
EDIT: And just to make it clear... I'm not saying we should be selling our best player. I'm saying that with the sale increasingly seeming like a foregone conclusion, Levy (with Baldini and AVB) have made the best of the situation.

There must be more to it than purely selling Bale as that doesn't account for the increased wage bill. It seems to be a change in mentality comapred to previous windows from hoping to get into the CL to doing everything in our power to get there and possibly go further.

That covers the wages of at least 5 new signings. The extra TV income will cover the rest. We're still trying to shift the likes of Ade, BAE and probably one of Sig/Holtby on loan. Don't think there's going to be much increase and in terms of % of revenue it will be down.
Can we wait until the window closes please. So people are forgetting that our supreme leader likes a deadline day deal or two. I expect to see some players moved on that we could do with keeping.

Personally, I don't think it's just a question of the money, either; I think Baldini's involvement may have made a lot of difference as well, in terms of our ability to close deals. I've formed the impression people don't really like dealing directly with Levy, and Baldi has almost certainly oiled the wheels to some degree.Naughton16 said:

That is a good point. Didn't Noades (sp) refuse to sell CP's ground to that Simon bloke and so he got a third party to buy it and Simon bought it from them. Someone suggested a similar deal with Mata to RM and then to us

What increased wage bill? Seriously, if this season's wage bill is higher than last it won't be by much. By the end of this window we will have reduced our wages by:
- Gallas
- Bentley
- Huddlestone
- Parker
- Dempsey
(all of whom were on relatively high wages I would think)
We've also lost a whole bunch of other players who were on lower wages (you'd imagine), like:
- Caulker
- Bostock
- Livermore
PLUS, it wouldn't surprise me if Gomes and Adebayor also leave before September (one of which is on high wages, and the other on VERY high wages). And to top it all off, we're also losing our highest earner in Gareth Bale.
We have massively reduced our wage bill there. And we've added:
- Soldado
- Paulinho
- Chadli
- Capoue
Plus we're talking about adding:
- Lamela
- Chiriches
- Eriksen
I don't think Chiriches, Eriksen, Capoue or Chadli are likely to be on massive wages. No more than the likes of Dempsey, Huddlestone or Parker. Soldado is probably being paid a fortune, but more that Gallas? Unlikely. Lamela is unlikely to be earning more than Bentley.
We'll never know, now that Spurs no longer have to publish their accounts, but I'd say Levy has:
a) reluctantly sold his best player
b) used the money to improve the team as a whole
c) reduced the wage bill in the process.
I've criticised him in the past, but the man deserves a round of applause come September 3rd.

this case looks like it will pan out to be one of;
selling our best player to build our "best" squad (not a comparision to the '60s, just a figure of speach)
and securing our future development (ie young players and stadium)
even now, Bale out and no one in makes our squad stronger than when we ended last season.
if we get the final few pieces, we will have a VERY good and solid squad.
that is basis for which to cement a place in the top 4, and then you only need to buy one or two "top" players each summer (like Man U do) to improve.
we needed revolution to take us from mid table to regular 5th.
its taken this mini revolution to take the next step (hopefully), improving the quality of the squad by replacing squad players with better calibre players.

Yeah - the Lamela, Vlad, Eriksen and Bale transfers will bring us back to exactly £0 net spend.
Coentrao and any CF would also be offset by the sales of BAE, Defoe/Ade and Gomes.
In terms of wages - we've actually got rid of nearly all our highest earners (Bale, (Ade), Gallas, Parker and Bentley) this window. None of the incomings will be on as much by the sounds of it as they are largely all coming from smaller/less-well-paid leagues.
