Hold on mate - I said look back, not pass back.
Saw some stats today that shows that his passing is predominantly of two types: played quickly out wide with long distribution passed out to the flanks for the wide forwards and then much longer, more vertical passes through the inside channels towards the penalty area which Soldado would love.
By looking back I meant a player who does not get a rush of adrenalin when the team is in attack mode but actually understands his role and drops back into the space to allow his teammates to do their stuff with solidity and security.

would be a welcome change from Parker thinking he's an all action box to box midfielder the last season and a half - although granted that may have been how he was asked to play tbf

I was a great fan of Parker before his injury (ask Scara 
) and he was magnificent for 7 months in a totally different system under Redknapp.
AVB requires more tactical discipline and Parker is no longer adept for the new way we play.
One last point - there is no such thing as having too many good midfielders. Games are won and lost in midfield and that is where you cannot afford to get caught out by injuries - as we found out to our detriment last year. It was not the absence of Adebayor or Defoe that cost us CL - it was Lennon, Bale, Sandro and Dembele at different periods without adequate replacement.

Of course it was because he was asked to play that way. He can't help the manager deciding to use him in a role he's not especially good at, he just does his job.

don't get me wrong - i thought he was fantastic for the most part that season under Redknapp and was actually pretty happy to see him come in when Sandro got injured, however he never returned to his early form for us

This is what i don't get. I agree that AVB is manager that has implemented tactical discipline in our team but he's also the one that has decided to play Dembele as the deeper CM and parker as the box to box cm which we can all clearly see was the wrong thing to do (and he persisted with it throughout). There's no way you can tell me Parker can't play the sitting role if told to do so (much like he did in his appearances for England). You can't lose the ability to play a role you've played for large chunks of your footballing career.
you say Capoue is best at sitting infront of the back 4, ok so lets wait and see if he actually plays that role for us. If he starts bombing forward it's not because he's suddenly forgot how to play the sitting role or his decided to change the way he plays.

I was watching him on YouTube as you do and there was one vid showing all his touches in the match versus Lyon last year, I think. I find these types of vids are better than the highlights reels as they show the good and bad. He looked superb and the Malteser has described his characteristics accurately if that vid was anything to go by.
He played deep in front of the back two mostly, and came looking for the ball off the defenders a lot. Mostly quick recycling of possession but was not adverse to the Hollywood ping every now and then. He had a bit of everything really but mostly he played with the discipline you would like your DM to have, something which has deserted parker now. I'll try and find the link.

Do you think Dembele is a box to box player? Never really saw this as his forte. He ends up dribbling himself into too many blind alleys without releasing the final clinical pass. How many assists did he get last year? Can't remember too many. I think that AVB saw this and understood that - for all his limitations - Parker was the best we had. Which is why we have moved for Paulinho...
TBH, if Capoue comes in, I think Dembele will be the one who will be under most pressure...

Dembele is far more a box to box player than he is a deep lying playmaker imo. He didn't get many assists last season because he played much deeper than his partner and there's no way Scott Parker is more suited to a box to box role.

I think AVB's tactical thinking in terms of what to do with our midfield goes way beyond any of us 'clearly seeing' that it was the wrong thing to do to play them the way he did.

Parker has been a box-box player for most of his career 1st at Charlton then latterly at West Ham. He is not a traditional holding player a la Carrick. That said I agree that Dembele is also box-box - I mean he started off as a striker so playing deep is not his natural position in my opinion. But the other than Sandro or Hudd we do not have holding midfielders.

I think he's lost a bit of pace since the start of his first season with us, if so perhaps because of his injury perhaps just because he's a bit older. Might just be my perception of things, but to me he seems slower to get into pressure and close to situations and as a result he's not as effective at winning the ball as he was.
I'm in no way confident that he could have the same impact on the pitch this season as he did two years ago.
