OMT: Tottenham Hotspur v Sunderland Match History 1898-2013 (Asia Trophy)

I don't agree with "absolutely nothing" if we're talking about the entire pre-season as a whole, but results in a single game mean absolutely nothing.

The players that played today aren't the players that will play whatever way we try come the start of the season as we were missing at least 8-9, possibly 10 of the players that will (hopefully) be available come the first game of the season.

Not sure which part of my post you were referring to as nonsense, but I'll just ask the same question again. Were you expecting us to be tactically solid in this game all things considered?

I see pre-season games as a means of implementing things that you wish to do when the season starts proper also to bed in new players, the way we tried to play today I would have been happy to see Carrol start with Townsend up front in one of the wide positions, then we would be learning something instead of seeing the same old players struggling in their new roles, tactics, what tactics I never see any, also I hope to GHod that Kaboul is fit for next season, no offence meant with the nonsense bit.

Some people are unbelievable. In what way will that team that played to day in anyway resemble the team or even second team that will play for us in the coming season.

Thudd and Parker started in midfield and both are likely to leave this summer. None of the front 3 will probably start and the defence would be described as shadow or make-shift at best!

Chill out this game was about putting some players in the shop window and gaining fitness - nothing else.

lack of goals is....Swindon, Colchester, Sunderland.....2 goals scored

just a continuation from last seasons run in....no Bale, no threat

This. Even with our B team, it would be nice to see some tactical cohesion and defensive solidity. Our goal threat is still minimal minus Bale.

So we play in pre-season with players that are going to leave, in midfield? Is that what you are telling me here? Are we getting them some game time so they are fit when they play with another team?

Dear oh Dear... What a mess

We could play Sandro.. Oh wait he's just back from injury.. Paulinho? Oh wait he's on holiday as he played in the confederations cup (or w/e).. Dembele? Oh wait he's suffering from a sinus issue..

We play in pre-season with players who are available at the time. You might say Carroll, i don't think he's going to be effective on a pitch like that in any way.

Holtby? He wasn't in the squad either, but nobody ever mentioned what was the issue with him.

Play who you want, but don't play players who are going to leave while yours are not getting match fit.

To see Livermore still at this club who probably wouldn't make it in the championship is beyond belief.

So you'd rather we played without a Central midfield?

That would have been a useful pre-season match.

You cant call this knee jerk as I have been saying it for ten years now.

We need quality, and apart from Bale, going forward and in midfield we haven't got any.

Look at the Spanish team, all about technique and quality.

Look at Arsenal they have players who can play, arteta, whilshere, Cazorla.

And us we are here, wondering why we lost with the likes of Dempsey, aaron Lennon and Adebayor... We need to sell them and buy players who can play. Its as simple as that. You can add to that list, Parker, Livermore, Huddlestone (He can pass but not a professional, so unfit), Sigurdsson, Assou ekotto, and the list goes on.

Who said that? If you haven't got enough players, you buy some. If they are all injured, you play the kids, not players who are on their way out. If they are that is. I don't think we`ll sell them. My bet is they`ll be around for years failing and bottling.

So we should have gone out and bought midfielders for a pre-season friendly tournament because some of ours were not available for a game or two?

:ross:

Ask the players that.

And what do you want, go into the first game of the season in no form whatsoever, and start off with brick results like last year?

We HAVE to breed a winning mentality, and this type of result does the opposite.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not shouting for AVBs head, and brick like that.

I just want us to be more clinical

From what I remember from about the last 20 odd years, our pre-season performances have been inversely proportional to our in season performances.

Loads of times in the 90s/early 00s we beat all comers in pre-season, then went and had crap years. More recently we've looked stuttering and disjointed, then gone on to have our best seasons.

I think in sports science its called peaking - at a time like this you want players to be pretty much at the bottom of their curve.

how many times have we said over the years that we need the players in early so they have a full pre-season so we don't lose our first games? How many times have we said that?

Here we are again, with the same squad, playing transfer listed players.

If you don't mind that then I cant help you.

Even though Ade was MOTM - head and shoulders above anyone bar maybe Dawson.

Speaking after the match, manager Andre Villas-Boas said this about Vertonghen:

“He might have sprained the ligaments in his left ankle.

“We need to have an MRI to see the full extent. But there is some range of movement in the ankle so we hope that it won’t be that long. We hope he will be back for the first game of the season.

“I was concerned [about the conditions] but what can you do? It isn’t great. The pitch is what it is, it’s always like that at this tournament. You can’t change the conditions. They are extremely poor.”

you are right...its not about this pre season game, its longer than that weve had this issue. we need players who can pass and move, show some intelligence, some creative spark

We do already have the players in the team. They were just not available for multiple reasons. that i have already given, but lets go through it again. For a 4-3-3 you want 6 midfielders.

Paulinho - On holiday as he played the confederations cup.
Sandro - Just returning from injury.
Dembele - Has sinus issues.
Carroll - Passes it along the ground, on a waterlogged pitch he would suffer immensely.
Holtby - Not sure.
Siggurddsson - Played on the left because Chandli couldn't be registered.

The kids could not be registered either. So where is this mysterious central midfield pair that you would have played?
