hold on, just a minute a go you said goals and expectations change over a season - so why does it matter what people thought at the beginning of last season?

This I do agree with. People are crazy to change their expectations on goals. Stick with your opinions from day one I say and if they are exceeded then great, if not then sad. But don't change the opinion like the weather based on a run of a results within a season. Crazy to do that!

I dont know. I have no idea what went on and why we ended up in this state.

Doesn't change the fact that we were stronger last season and weaker this.

What I'm getting at is people on here seem to want to blame everything on the last manager but no one wants to ask questions about the guy running the club.

Well who's fault is it then that we are weaker?

Who's fault is it that we still don't have a component striker?

why does there need to be someone at fault?

we lost the heart beat and engine room of our team last season and have taken on a new manager and brought in several new faces - it's an ongoing project - do you not think that we should give the new set up a couple of season to get things how they want it?

Redknapp had 3.5 years to build his team, judging by the signings of Lloris, Vertonghen, Dembele as well as the likes of Sandro Bale and Lennon already here then id say there is reason to think we can build a team on a par to that of last season. just because it hasn't happened instantly is no need to get irate and start looking for people to blame.

jeez

Ok. I'm not blaming anyone for anything: i just think last season we underachieved, this season we are overachieving.

I think Levy is doing a brilliant job. Turned from absolute dross into credible top four challengers, whilst trying to secure a financial package worth 100's of millions to build a new stadium.

We're also at a point where its harder to buy better than what we have, and we cant be wasting 10-15 million on players who wont have the desired impact. We do have glaring defeciencies in the squad, but they are not easy to plug.

But that is a completely different topic isnt it?

If good players don't play to their ability, you don't regard that as underachieving?

Thats called good players playing poorly. It happens in football sometimes, otherwise you could hand out the titles and finishing spots in august before the season kicks off.

winning a cup competition is no measure of a sides overall quality

Wigan & Emirates Marketing Project the two best sides in England in 2012/13

Exactly the reason many managers get way over rated. Cup football is a terrible way to judge a manager or team.

We ended up with Ramos as he was judged on cup football. Our chairman, with a 1st class degree from Cambridge, didn't even seem to check who they drew each round of the competitions. 2 UEFA Cup and a Spanish cup seem great until you look more closely. Sevilla built a reputation beating second tier opposition, but Ramos got judged on the big shinning trophies you get for doing so. I think I'm right in saying they won the UEFA Cup without beating a single top 4 side from any of the major leagues. Even Zenit didn't finish in the top 4 in Russia that season.

Because nobody expected us to finish above Chelsea, which we did. It was only a technicality and outrageous bad luck that cost us a place in the CL. As the season went on it was clear that despite being inferior to Chelsea, we were playing better than they were.

I didn't expect us finish above Arsenal at the start of the season purely because I thought we were still weak mentally, but I honestly thought AVB had cracked it and the win over Arsenal should just about see us over the line to get above them.

To be fair he had Sevilla competing against Barca and REal for acouple of seasons running, didn't he?
