*** Tottenham Hotspur vs Liverpool OMT ***

I'd be interested to see how many times Defoe touched the ball and compare to Ade v West Ham, and other recent games. My original comment was a bit of tongue in cheek, I think it's no secret that both have been poor for a while now.

I honestly don't think either of them are good enough. I'm not making excuses for Defoe, but I also don't see how Bale's great form has anything to do with anyone except Bale and AVB.

i wouldn't say i was a 'big fan of his' and im fully aware he has been a disappointment this season, but that doesn't mean he doesn't contribute anything at all and as others have tried to convey during these recent games - his work off the ball AND what appears to be specific instruction to drop off and allow Bale the space to attack through the middle is one something which he does do well.

it'll be interesting to see how he performs through the middle if Defoe has an extended run in the side, i seem to recall during the opening part of the season he was often criticized for being rather anonymous . . .

Ive got to say to the guys who are saying its harsh etc on Walker and Defoe and its only a game. Well, its not a game anymore, its a business. At Premier League level decisions cost games. IF you are on 40k a week then unfortunately, you have to take to flak when you play a 'Hollywood' ball from the halfway line to your keeper but doesnt even get to the box.

Stayed away for two hours. Had a feeling this thread might be bedlam.

Just heard Rodgers saying his team showed characther..they didnt need too, quite frankly we handed them all 3 points. I didnt expect us to get anything today pre-kick-off, but to lose from the position we were in was heartbreaking.
Next 2 games are season-defining, get through v Milan will give the club a boost and then we need to go into the break with a win v Fulham to restore confidence.
Blow up v Inter and the season could fall apart quite quickly.

Very pleased we didnt appear to tire as much as I felt we might bearing in mind the intensity of the performance on Thursday night. That was a plus.
Failure to secure a Lennon-replacement and another striker in Jan cost us dear today. Defoe is getting a lot of stick, but I honestly believe we are being forced to play him when he is not 100% fit because of our striker situation.

We've given Arsenal,Everton and Liverpool a big boost today. Really think we need to win at Swansea now to take some pressure off the run-in

Vexing result today, as we had the upper hand and could have easily come away from Anfield with all three points if it wasn't for some truly horrendous defensive errors.

No need to apportion blame - those who made the mistakes will be well aware of them and they will hopefully learn their lessons.

Big week ahead of us with a trip to the San Siro on Thursday followed by Fulham at the Lane on Sunday.

Absolutely 100% this.

Full-backing from the fans required next Sunday.

*sigh* Could we borrow Hernandez for a season, please? Christ, it feels like any other striker in the PL could do better for us atm. :(

Whew. Okay. Positive cap on. Like everyone's said this was an awful way to lose considering how well we were doing for much of the match and I am just SEETHING at Walker and Defoe atm, but.... BUT I have to say that it doesn't feel like the start of a Spurs Implosion either - you know, the kind of bottle job that sees everyone in the whole team choke, concede five goals in one half, and then promptly never regain their mojo for the rest of the season as we lose in miserable fashion to the likes of Wigan and QPR.

Instead, this was much more of an Arsenal sort of collapse, where the team cruise controls for 85 minutes and then someone makes one hilarious error to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory, and then everyone in the media wrings their hands and says Wenger is losing it but really in the end Arse comfortably finish 3rd because they do 90% of the stuff right but some idiot loses concentration and Wenger stomps on his water bottle and looks like he's swallowed a lemon.

And that? Is actually kinda encouraging.

I'll have to go back and rewatch the match with more attention, but my impression is that despite those very, very poor goals we handed to them on a silver plate with a cherry on top, this game showed that we have truly progressed as a team from the last time we met. We played poorly against them at the Lane and have picked up a good run of results since, but it was not really clear - unconditionally clear, without-reservations clear - until today that we have made substantial strides since that match in the early days of AVB's reign, not when we've been playing mostly mediocre or out-of-form teams including Inter, with the one very good team in Arse we could hardly say we dominated.

However, today there could be no caveats. Today we faced a side in absolute scintillating form at their home ground three days after squeezing the life out of Inter for 90 minutes, and looked far more in control this time around despite the tiredness. Liverpool could've just had a meh day at the office, but I really don't think so - they may lose thanks to comedy defensive errors or good counterattacks but they almost never concede midfield and the possession stats, especially not at home. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying we were rampant by any means and they arguably could've had more penalties, but the signs of us genuinely gelling as a team are starting to show (even with players out of position) and I think that is so, so important at this stage with many more difficult games to play. The "cracks" are starting to fill themselves in, not just get slapped over with a Bale(tm) Bandaid Special. Results give you momentum, but I think it's the overall performances that are the real harbinger of where you end up in the end. And this performance was not bad, blots and all.

Keep our chins up, keep plugging away. We will make it.

yeah ref was poor, they were filth at times Liverpool

Suarez committed at least 3 yellow card offences yet all he got was a talking to, Gerrard basically took Bale's head off too

Yeh Suarez was grabbed by Benny but fudge me he went down like he had been snipered as did Sturridge, scum bags

Good positive post Skyfarer, thats the spirit.

Spot on. Next weekend could be very interesting.
Everton v City City are getting their mojo back, can see Everton dropping points and falling out of the picture
Southampton v Liverpool Liverpool look to have some potential banana-skin games against teams fighting for their lives could be a draw this one
Swansea v Arsenal Swansea have Arsenal and us in consecutive home games, tough call

Batting last on the Sunday,at least we will know where we stand

I've stayed away due to fear of carnage.

Details cost us. Gameplan was excellent and we were in control. Gylfi should've buried one of his two chances at least, buried, and I felt we really really missed Lennon on the cover (first goal and second where Walker didn't have his natural cover) and Ade. Ade holds the ball up better than JD, especially against two big defenders like that, he's a constant presence and he defends well too. The mistakes are obvious, Walker and JD will hold their hands up and know this. It's a game we should've won, but there we go, it was bound to happen sometime, just a shame we gave it to them. I think AVB needs to find a way to play a strong side Thursday but rest a couple. I'd have Walker rested (he has to be tired) and Verts too...Dembele if possible on the bench...Gerrard should've gone IMO for the elbow (terrible) and as for Suarez, well Benny's not getting the ball so he has to avoid contact as Suarez is going to go down under the slightest contact. Which he did. Cannot give the ref a decision to make there, because the attacker should get the benefit of the doubt...unless it's Bale of course, in which case it has to be a dive! so I won't complain about that one.
