OMT - Tottenham vs. Lyon

I'd like to see Holtby in his position. Seems to have the required aggression, probably not quite as good in a tackle but he can pass and move.

Hopefully we will do soon.

Even Bale pointed out we looked a bit tired, obviously I don't want us to see us disrupt the team balance but some players are starting to look a bit jaded and the options are there to change it up a bit. Holtby and Siggy in for Parker and Dempsey perhaps...

We have to rely on individual goals because we're not very fluid and clever at this whole pass-and-move business. Dribbling is a great skill to have in your locker, but we can't mindlessly dribble everywhere or take three touches just to control the ball and figure out where to pass to. Don't get me started on how static we are once we've offloaded the ball to a teammate too...we've gotten much better at our off-the-ball work as a team, but we start walking once we've gotten the ball. That's a pretty damning difference between us and United, forget about just the striker business. It's not about the like-for-like differences in individual quality, it's about the cohesion and intelligence of the team as a whole.

We have to get cleverer in the transfer market if we want to get somewhere. Even though I actually like most of our players, passing technique and vision are very, very difficult to improve once in your twenties.

OK, OK..I thought there were signs tonight of the quick release, especially from Holtby. Dembele is so good at going past players but time after time i am screaming at him to make an obvious pass.
But I think it is only fine tuning needed..Holtby may well turn out to be the catalyst.

From what I've read he played there pretty well in Germany a few times.

If that's true, I'd rather see Holtby and Dempsey (even out of form) on the pitch than Holtby and Parker. Obviously Holtby and Sandro would be far better when it's an option.

I've read that he has played there too but I think that most of his performances this season have been in a more advanced role. I think that with a new player, coming into a new club, in a new league, in a new country, it is best to play them in their strongest position whilst they settle.

I also think that whilst Parker is not in the best form at the moment (and I know that you are not his biggest fan even when he is on form) we will need him in the run him and we need to give him a chance to play himself back into form.

Is it not obvious that my frustration is such because I DONT want us to fail ? Missing out on the CL last season was heartbreaking but it was the way we threw it away that hurt most. The same could (and almost certainly will) happen again if we dont improve as a team overall. Wonder goals wont be enough to keep us winning if the others dont step up to the plate.

I do apologise if I seem negative to some, but its only because we are so close to realy getting somewhere but could ultimately end up with nothing again.

Im a realist and do not cover my ears and ears to the obvious. I remember last season when things started going pear shaped lots of people buried their heads in the sand and thought the unthinkable couldnt happen. But it did. I dont think I could take it again this year.

A fair post and appreciate you explaining our pessimism. Given your comments on last season (ones I echoed after 'that' derby) I would ask you to may e take a step back and evaluate the overall health of he club versus this time last year. I 'think' you will see that right now, the glass is not only half full but promising an overflow in the next 12 months.

We can be both deliriously happy and realistically worried at the same time :) Might be my Asian parents, but as soon as I/anything I support do something well, I immediately start looking for ways to pick it apart and see if we can do better!

I'd thus advise a nice fresh cuppa and the deep knowledge that we are in the right long-term direction and the potentially right short-term direction. Take RVP from Man Yoo and its the same...

You have to allow for mitigating circumstances. Right now we are missing Defoe's speed of movement and Sandro's simplicity. Parker, as much as he brings, slows the team down. Dembele is adapting to him but slowly. When you lose players like that, you are going to lose fluidity. Lyon shaped up very very well and took advantage of our sluggishness. This is a passage of time in our season which are riding out well considering. It is very clear by AVBs lack of window movement that he is gearing up his changes for the summer. Right now our squad spirit and having GHod on our side, is proving a saviour. If it continues this way through to the end of May, I will take it in the knowledge that the manager knows hat needs doing...

Nothing to do with GHod, Bale did it tonight and in recent weeks but Dempsey and Ade have done it in the past and I have a good feeling about the new guy.
So many miskicks and deflections did not go our way this evening.
I think a draw was probably a fair result..but who said life was fair? Loads and loads of good points about tonight. Can't think of any bad ones.

You have a very very good long term memory.

We have players who just want too many touches of the ball. As skyfarer points out, we need some quicker thought one touch players, much like Holtby. Lennon and Ade are capable of it when playing well. But we let teams settle too quickly, Luka and VDV were huge in this respect

A agree with a lot of the comments about our lack of quick passing etc, but we have to remember we were playing a team 2nd in their league and who arte season European competition competitors.

All considering, I thought we were very solid overall; we were made to look ponderous because Lyon approached us with asimilar attitude wily teams approach Real Madrid now: 'Let them have the ball and make them break us down.'

I would have been more worried if we had looked very shaky at the back.

That second glorious goal by Bale now means they have to atack at some point and as long as defensively we keep our shape that could leave space for us to hit (which wont be easy, but we don't have a game until the second leg and we have our weapons on the break..oh..and BALE!!!!)

Siggurdsson and Holty could be crucial in the away leg to allow us to keep posession for longer periods.

I'm actually quite confident we'll go through

Superb save from Brad when required and one other easy save.
I think we are pretty much unbeatable now with a rotated defence. Good on AVB.
