OMT - Tottenham vs. Lyon

He should be nowhere near the starting line-up considering his form, as well as Holtby's impact in his last 3 games

cliché i know, but it really seemed we were playing with 10 men until Holtby came on. Our attacking play overall was the poorest ive seen for a long time

Question for Statto: How many times have we played the home and away leg of a cup tine without any other games in between?

Seeing as the OP doesn't include any specifics about this game, do we need a new OMT for the away game? This is uncharted territory.

Start a new one, it'd have to go some to be worse than this effort.

Delighted we won but disappointed by the narrow win. Wish we had stopped them scoring or atleast get another goal. It is going to be a really tense second leg in Lyon. We should have made more use of our home advantage to get a bigger win. It is now like holding a 2-1 lead at half time. We need to get atleast another goal as cannot see us keeping a clean sheet there.

Bale has again turned out to be our saviour. It is amazing how much we rely on him now. Both his 2 goals were well-taken and well-practised freekicks. Shows you what practising freekicks can do for you. Bale came to Spurs as a freekick specialist but lost his skills after that, maybe due to lack of practise in training. Due credit to AVB for letting Bale practise to get back his skills as a freekick specialist. Just can't remember us scoring 2 freekicks in the same match before, especially by the same player. Maybe THFC6061 can confirm this. Hope Bale will score more freekicks for us like that. It is amazing to see him scoring 6 goals in 4 matches for us now. Hope he will continue his goal scoring run.

Other than Bale's goals, there was nothing to shout about in this match. Felt too many players didn't turn up for this match, especially Lennon, Dempsey and Dembele. Cannot even remember Dempsey doing anything of note in this match. Well, atleast Adebayor turned up as his old self, wasting yet another one-on-one chance in the first half. It is unforgivable the way Adebayor wastes those chances time and time again. Bale also wasted an open sitter but atleast he made up for that with 2 goals. Adebayor has no such excuses. If Adebayor had scored that, we probably would have won with a bigger scoreline.

Really annoyed with our defending for the goal we conceded. We were too slow to close down the Lyon player from shooting. Friedel too should have done better as he was out of position and too slow to react. A young goalie like Lloris would have atleast tried to save it instead of ball-watching. That goal has given Lyon significant advantage in the second leg. With us just cannot stop conceding goals, we have to score atleast one goal to progress.

Beating an experienced European team like Lyon is always sweet. Just wish we had win with a bigger score to take into the second leg. Hope we will turn up with a better mentality than this in the second leg.

There didnt seem to be much trust amongst the front players in that each time a through ball could be played it was held on to as the midfielder didnt have any confidence in his team mate reading the situation. To be honest, we have lacked fluidity in ths way all season.

However, if we can just make it through this season and make CL then i think this issue will be seeiously addressed in he summer.

What is it with some of you? Dempsey has scored 4 goals this year and scored for the USA as well. We only scored 1 goal a game while Ade was away but that is now 2 goals in each of the 2 games since his return.

Holtby certainly had an impact but he is now goal-less in 4 games. Oops, inconvenient stat.

Correction make that 5 goals Deuce has scored for us this year.

His recent form has been poor - his last 3-4 games escpecially - team should be picked on form, not past stats, imv. And at this point in time, I feel Holtby offers exponentially more as an outlet than him.

Seriously, this is the second post I've seen like this. No goalkeeper would have gotten anywhere near it. To lay even the slightest hint of blame at the door of Friedel is beyond ridiculous.

I love Lloris, think he's a great keeper and rightfully our number one, but he would have gotten nowhere near that effort last night. Look at some of the goals he has conceded, none have been of the quality of that strike last night.

Maybe we could have defended it better but sometimes you just gotta take your hat off and say that it's a fantastic hit and a fantastic goal - one of the best I've seen. If you went through any game and that was the only 'chance' you gave up, then you keep a clean sheet 99 times out of 100 at least.

Wasn't a great performance but it's a good result against a good team. Not used to saying that as a Spurs fan to be honest.

I don't personally think that choice would be based on Brad's performance last night per se (rated him at 6/10) - simply 'insuring' our progress

As for the goal - I think he would have 'moved' part of his body at least or made some attempt to stretch an arm, etc. - it was a good +/- 25 metres out, mate - corner of the box.

I was rather hoping you would say that Dempsey has not scored in his last 4 and you want to replace him with Holtby who has not scored in the last 4.

In fact Holtby has not scored for us all season. I think we should get rid of him.

The scoring numbers in this particular instance mean very little, not sure why you insist on bringing those up - what is important refers to their overall form, contribution, impact, movement, technical ability, attacking / goal threat, performance as an outlet, etc. - all aspects in which Holtby has been been superior, imv in the last 3 games.

I give up.

Dont see how anyone can describe that as a good game. Thought we were pretty poor tbh. Most players well below their best.

A good contest - yes, a good game - hardly.

Good game, as in exciting and drama right to the end. I found it entertaining at least, perhaps not great for the neutral, but 3 fantastic goals and some neat play at times.

First half was better than the second I suppose.

---------------------------------

Thought we were alright, but we struggled again when they sat back. Holtby helped a little with this, but perhaps not enough. Delighted to see Assou-Ekotto back to his best. If that long ball to Ade had turned into an assist it would have been one of the best assists of the season.

Our reliance on Bale is becoming slightly worrying, but he missed one glorious chance, Ade was one on one and we had some other decent chances.

Sorry mate, you are having a laugh! That shot was hit at about 90miles an hour and was in the back of the net before anyone in the stadium moved. Mr Tickle woyuldn't have saved that shot... not Brad's fault at all... and he saved our bacon with the other save which he tipped over the bar. Half the stadium only knew that was a goal when they saw the Lyon players huddled around the corner flag haveing a love-in!

I am confidently predicting a win on Thursday. I am taking my eldest son (aka Lucky Luke) to his 9th game and his record is now 8 wins and 1 draw (and that draw was away at Middlesborough), and my youngest to his first ever Spurs game. They are both desperate to see Bale play, and Benny (for Luke) and Hugo for Josh. Me, I just want a good game, and a win please by two goals at least. If you are in the North stand lower, please mind the language... it's quite difficult to explain to a 7 year old who the clown shoe in the black is!

Can you bring him to the Arsenal match please

Right... that's now 9 wins, 1 draw! Anyone fancy buying him a ticket for the remaining games this season.... he even had the cheek to turn to me before the second free kick and tell me not to worry, Bale was going to score!

It was a superb hit. I thought it was going wide from my position to one side of the goal, but that might be because I'm used to watching our lot. You could sense there was danger as soon as the ball came off Gallas's head though, and Walker might have reacted a tad faster to try and close Umtiti down, although I reckon it's unlikely he would have prevented the goal.

even if someone had been able to close him down you'd always encourage a shot from there rather than a cross as statically thats the better choice

its one of those where you just have to say fair play, good hit

what does annoy me though is the lazy commentator cliche of "two keepers wouldn't have stopped that" when they clearly would as one of them would have been stood in that side of the goal

Right, so you reckon take Dempsey out of the team - even if he is on poor form, which I disagree with, who is going to score our goals as it's only him and Bale that seem capable at the moment and you can't rely on Bale to get us out of trouble every week...

I can think of two goals that Dempsey have scored that have won us 4 points - both against Manure. And there might be more points. While Clint is not a set-the-world-alight type of player he generally 'does a job' that is unflashy and important to the team. Could we get better than him? Yes, definitely. At the moment we have him and he clearly does something that AVB likes and appreciates.
