Eric Dier

On the confidence thing is it possible that Romero makes players around him better and more confident.

Sure, he's caught "out of position" at times, though the job for the others is rather basic in theory at least, cover for him, we have a back three, should be doable most of the time.

On the other hand he rather frequently just wins the ball in situations where others wouldn't. Must be a confidence boost for the others. "Here's a danger situation, scanning, moving, oh never mind Romero just won the ball".

On the ball he's very composed and has real quality. Must be a boost for the others knowing that they can pass to him under pressure, he can and will get out of pressure most of the time. He will do a lot of the heavy lifting on the ball so others can do a bit less, less pressure, can keep it simple more of the time. And of course he makes us a lot harder to press against.

Will be interesting to see if the return of Romero can help Dier return to his best.

I think it’s a lot more than that
It’s the team having confidence in each other
We never play the same side game to game currently which is not how we played the second half of last season
The teams that are doing well this season you can predict the line up ….
That stability backed up with a win or two elevates the confidence and belief in the system

Those are definitely also important factors. Just wondering if having Romero next to you is also a confidence boost.

Those players who you mentioned for arsenal crumbled last year don’t forget
The key is time… they have all been given time along with the coach.

They now have confidence and know the system he wants to play

We can’t give conte time as his contract doesn’t work like that, so it has to be instant

Conte will have time as long as the short term results are good enough, he will be happy to stay as long as the progression is there.

But yeah, there's a real need for a rather quick uptick in performances and results for both the club and Conte to be happy. For Conte to get/take that time.

For me at least signings will almost certainly have to be a part of that, unless we get very lucky with injuries. And there probably needs to be a real positive impact this season from one or two signings.

Is he? Couldn't see him getting into any of the current three ahead of us or a few below either.

My point was that he has been a top 4 defender for well over half his career. He may yet end the season as one again. However I agree that if silverware/final yard is the aim, an upgrade will be needed.

Is that true? As a starting CB hes finished in the Top 4 once (last season). He has otherwise played DM or filled in at times as a sub option CB/RB. He is yet to be a proven top 4 quality CB as we've finished outside the top 4 with him as a CB more times than we have in it.

He played starting CB under Poch in a 3. Weren’t we CL that year?

We have finished in the top 4 when Dier has had better CB’s next to him; Toby, Jan and now Romero. He’s akin to Dawson and Bassong, looks ok next to a world class CB but not good enough to be the main man in the defensive unit. Still tickles me that people have been touting him as our future captain for years. The fact that he has become a mainstay in the defence is more a failure of the club to adequately replace the Belgians rather than Dier rising up and becoming a top player.

I think thats fair TBH.

Last season he was good but as a collective, him, Davies and Romero were and played alot together, its not ideal that we don't have that continuity this season but the mark of a top player is one that lifts others or at least maintains his own standard, unfortunately he seems to lack confidence now.

At the end of the day, regardless what people think or say, no one really wants to hate on players or be critical, if you aint you are playing well and we all want that, but we have to be fair also in that we have to improve to win things and personally I want to win things, sick of not and years of underachieving, to do that as @thfcsteff says we would need to improve.

He would however be a good squad player for me and the nature of the seasons mean that would be alot of playing time, we just need to improve the quality of our backline overall

Totally agree. Fine with him as a squad player but too inconsistent to be a regular. More mediocre seasons that good IMO.

I believe we will see an uplift in the team's general play when we get our CBs playing to the level of verts and Toby. Not just defence, but the confidence and support through midfield and attack

In the 16/17 season when we finished 2nd we played a mixture of 4231 with Dier in CM & 3atb with Dier in the 3 - he played almost every game, 4231 was the most used formation but a significant number of games were played with 3atb.

However it has to be noted that we had a much stronger unit of defensive players around him that season.

I think it's also fair to say he hasn't continied his development since those early years, possibly/probably due to the subsequent seasons where he had a lot of time off through illness/injury.

Yep. He has said many times that CB is his position. This is his 4th season of being 1st/2nd choice for the position in which he has been given plenty of backing and support, don’t recall him being dropped or rested for more than 1 or 2 games. As you say, hasn’t kicked on. He’s not even better than he was 2-3 years ago when he was given the nod to take over from Vertonghen.

100%
I think it’s key that he can play in a top 4 side, but the confusions need to be right

In the right role and system, with the right players around him I believe he's good enough to be a starter in a top four side.

But I don't think he's good enough to be the best centre back for a team that wants to get regular top four finishes. We need better players next to him for him to be "good enough". We have that in Romero at the very least.

If he could cut down on the mistakes he would be a much better player (like every other defender). If he can do that with consistency I'm not convinced.

I think it is important that we remember the majority of their great work was in a four with two of the fastest and best full-backs in Britain. We should afford Dier the fact that he has never had either FBs or WBs of that quality alongside him. Toby and Jan also enjoyed an incredibly well-balanced and consistent midfield and team overall; with Eriksen, Dembele, Wanyama and sometimes a DM Dier in front of them, Jan and Toby's jobs were much much easier. Again, to be clear, I am not excusing mistakes, but with the likes if Tanganga, Royal, Sanchez and under-par Bissoumas around you, it can get a little tougher to build both performances and consistent relationships. When he had a steady diet of Romero, Royal, Davies and Deccy, despite the relative inferiority of some, he was very very good. I would love an upgrade, but a proper upgrade, not a side grade or retrograde.

Thought he was really good today ( they all were!), but the tactic of allowing him to move in to CM when City had the ball deep worked really well I thought. Hopefully that’s a bit of flexibility in the system that translates to other games as well.
