****Tottenham Hotspur v Wolverhampton Wanderers****OMT

Conte is inadvertently making the same mistake Mourinho did by letting the opposition have possession/control too high up the pitch - Bentancur is a step in the right direction and maybe alongside Skipp, whose absence seems to have coincided with our downturn in form, thry could mske a midfield 2 work but atm it seems we need numbers in there to compensate for quality.

Would Kulusevski work in a deeper no.10 position?
Bentancur Skipp
Kulusevski
Kane Son

I think thats precisely what we'll see soon. Feel the most solid and balanced option to me. TBD whether Kulu would be more a 3rd CM or no 10 (or one in possession and one out of it)

Kulu has some neat tricks and technique coming in off the wing. But right now, he's not got enough to start in the attacking 3. Which is why playing at wingback would be ideal. Provided he can defend well, then he can add heaps more to attacks than Royal, and ease his way in. Hopefully get some goals and assist - which he's more than capable of. You can see he has ability but needs to settle and find confidence.

Kulu plays like an AM you can see it from the touches he makes. I can't see him as an effective RWB. Theres nothing in his game that suggests he would excel there. Added to him being fairly one footed, youre not going to get first time crosses from him (one of the main criticisms of Royal), hes going to check back onto his left foot. Like you noted he doesn't really have blistering pace or acceleration. I just can't see it working. Love to be proved wrong but I just can't see anything about his game that suits playing WB on the wrong side to boot.

The 3 attackers is quite a subtle distinction anyway. You can ask Moura and Son to be a little deeper for example. Then you have more in midfield. In other words I don't think it is about whether its 523 or 343 or 352, it is about getting the team settled, familiar and condifent.

Well yes if we done things differently and asked our players to play another way to what we have neen the distinction becomes more subtle - but you know, that's not how we're currently setting up and using those players so the differences between 343 & 532 are stark and currently costing us

Hold on. How did Kulusevski get goals and assists for Atalanta? Wasn't he playing on the wing?

I'm with you. It surprises me when people talk of him as a RWB as I dont see him as having some of the basics for the position as you say

Since Poch each coach has had an aversion to midfield control. Its so strange when the majority of their successful teams have been that while controlling the midfield. I do wonder if its because the midfields they've inherited here have been so far from what they had been used to in terms of quality and personnel that they haven't thought it possible to play that way? Whatever the reason, i think its been the wrong approach to be taking as evidenced by the results.

The 3 attackers is quite a subtle distinction anyway. You can ask Moura and Son to be a little deeper for example. Then you have more in midfield. In other words I don't think it is about whether its 523 or 343 or 352, it is about getting the team settled, familiar and condifent.

But neither Son or Moura have the game to play in midfield, they wouldn't be effective playing deeper in CM. We would still have the same lack of presence in the middle just with two extra attackers clogging up the way. Theres a reason you play specialists in specific roles. Its not for some nominal reason, its because the roles and requirements suit their natural attributes. Of course sometimes you get players who have either a wide spread of attributes or a tight set in diverse areas so those players can be used in more than one position but thats not really Moura and certainly not Son. They just dont have the instincts of a CM or even an AM. If we want more quality and presence in midfield we need to play players suited to that task, Kulu looks a prime candidate or even just add an additional CM.

Wouldn’t work with son and Moura as their control and passing is so poor
You need players who value the ball and can use it well
Son this season is scoring but his touch has been awful, truly awful
Moura controls the ball like a bomb sometimes
You need a midfield that wins the ball in the right place
You play someone like Bentacur or winks behind two other CMs who play further forward in a V - you have a spoiler in there (skipp or PEH) and a creative type who may score a few like Kulu (need another and I’d bring in scarlet if need be)

Then Kane and son can play in partnership higher up where they can hurt teams

I am by nature an optimist, season after season following our club is draining my glass from half full to half empty.
You are lucky being an optimist supporting Spurs. I`m a pessimist by nature. Even my blood group is B negative. Its a miracle supporting Spurs hasn`t given me a heart attack.
Strange thing is I just love the club and nothing beats the feeling walking up to the ground and seeing it looming large in front of me. These days I`m not too miserable for long after a defeat. It used to properly get me for days when I was younger

Second half was better than the first. Was worried after seeing us line up with 2 in the middle.

Wolves are a very difficult side to beat and don’t let in many so even at 1-0 we were in trouble.

Lloris today never gave us the opportunity to set our stall out after his act of self sabotage so early in to the game . Not once but twice. That second goal starts with his awful pass.

Son was awful today and has been for some time. Sad sight to see . Looks utterly lacking in confidence.

Skipp and Dier are needed back lively if we are to salvage anything in this disaster of a season.

Conte must play with 3 in the middle moving forward.Especially at City or it could be a very bleak afternoon

When we played pool and Lestah

we had one deeper CB. Two played further forward with freedom and more alongside the deeper midfielder (was winks those games) who had 2 CMs in front of him (not by his side) pressing and running
It meant the wing backs could align with those players attacking more and support the two strikers

The distinction between an AM and RWF can be fairly small so it makes sense he could play the role well if his attributes match both roles. WB is quite a different proposition. The thing you notice first with most top quality WBs is pace, they almost always possess very decent pace. They also usually play on the same side as their favoured foot, it allows them to play quick combining play with the player ahead of them. Their defensive positioning is very key as well as their reading of the play and their use of recovery pace. None of which seems to match Kulu, admittedly I haven't watched a great deal but as yet nothing screams WB to me. The left foot being the biggest barrier to my eyes.

From what we've seen of Kulu, I am surprised people think he's good enough to play up top. I think he could be, in time. But I see a player who's lacking a bit of confidence, who needs regular games without massive pressure to score goals and assist. But who is very capable of doing that with a run of games and a little less pressure. You can see he's used to cutting in off the wing, and has talent. We need more down the right wing, and I'd be happy to give him a run of games at wingback - as Conte and Mr @Gazza Dazzla said. A lot of good attacking players ease their way in from fullback or wingback.

Watch this (turn the volume off)
Thsi was Kulu at Parma playing basically Eriksena role

Don't forget that he's coming back from an injury (even though his form was way below best before then), and seems like he's slower and taking extra touches.
