Covid outbreak at Spurs

That’s a given. It’s less than 10 days after we had people testing positive. I’d surprised if the Liverpool game goes ahead.
I'd be really surprised if the Liverpool game doesn't go ahead. Any other team, It would be a certainty to get postponed, but since its the bin dippers, FA will make us play, even with a Covid depleted squad, and maybe 1 day of training. We all know it.

Yeah, coz Liverpool already have been the source of a UEFA match super-spreader event (vs. Atletico Madrid) so the risks of a present-day Premier League match must now pale in comparison. And most of the victims are likely to be Liverpudlians and Liverpool fans. They're nails, baby. Coffin nails.

Agreed

I'm sure the Liverpool game will happen - our players who are covid-free will be back in training from Monday. And will feel better for the break

Plus those covid impacted players who have the virus but are symptomless will, I'm guessing, at least be keeping their fitness levels up at home. They too will have had a break

Then even those who tested positive and were will for a period, even if they were will for a week from the Tues of the positive tests, they'll have had 5 days post that

So, yes, there might be 1 or 2 from the 8 who tested positive who were ill for a longer period, or with worse effects, and they might not be back or ready, but I dont see why we sholdnt play against Liverpool

Could be.

I wonder what our approach will be. Most likely 3 PL games already postponed, even if we're out of the Conference we could be seeing some serious fixture congestion at some point, particularly if we go far in the domestic cups.

May be that we want to get back to playing. Liverpool game would be very difficult regardless. Perhaps we just want to get it out of the way? 4 games to make up, other teams will have other competing fixtures so difficult to know when they can be played, that's a lot.

Hopefully good work is being done behind the scenes. Fitness work, video work, but hard to make up for a lack of time on the training ground though.

Will be very interesting to see how we look when we're back playing.

You’re underestimating the power of me already having booked my non-refundable train ticket. Guaranteed postponement. :D

I think people are over-stating this. If we're out of Europe then there are plenty of free weeks. We might only have problem if we got to the finals of the domestic cups and ECL....otherwise getting knocked out of those frees up dates too

Sure, we might be playing 2 games per week for a large portion of 2022, but if we bring in 2-3 new faces, we'll be ok. I dont see that we'll ever get to the territory of playing say Sat-Mon-Thurs, unless we do make the finals of each competition

A couple of good strong loans would not go amiss either.

Wouldn't put it past me to overstate a point.

I agree that 3 games a week (two midweek games) seems unlikely. And depending on the cups there will be room. But yes, two games a week. Unless we somehow progress in the Conference.

Difference being two games a week with PL level opposition compared to quite a few games against smaller teams mixed in. No two leg cup ties with the chance to fix a poor result in the second leg. Crucial league games where dropped points are permantly dropped.

Most players can handle "three games in a week" (usually two games in an actual week, but three games in 8 days). It's the cumulative effect of repeated weeks with important and difficult midweek and weekend games. Injuries, fatigue, little time on the training ground.

2-3 new faces would go a long way to sorting that out. If we can sign the right 2-3 players that start playing well quickly, are a good fit and good enough. New faces on the bench, not ready or not good enough or not really trusted does very little.

I think perhaps you understate somewhat how much of a challenge signing those 2-3 players is. In January, with no preseason to get going. But perhaps I underestimate Paratici and our transfer work to come.

Good, put out some kids with something to prove. Let them fight for a place, put a challenge or five in, show salah and mane some proper tackling.
Lets see how robust they are.

I think I’ve referenced this - I’m fairly sure there are rules about not playing domestic games the same day as European games, which narrows the amount of ‘free’ match days during the week very significantly.

I think that's just to avoid big domestic matches being scheduled on dedicated European match days.

Not sure; perhaps there might be but even if there is such a role, these covid-times mean that rules are rightly being bent/adapted

I think UEFA might even have waived the rule for us once in recentish years, when fixture congestion meant we needed to play on a european night. Can't recall the details however.

United have now recorded a number of positive cases after playing Norwich and their game at Brentford is now in doubt.

Now let's see if those United fans who were saying we should be docked points for not playing v Brighton, think the same, now it's happened to them...i think not

I hate to say it but I agree with Arteta in that the PL needs to set a rule on this and adhere to it. At the most basic level, they should set a number of positive PCRs from senior players such that a game can be postponed. I'm not saying what that number should be, but at least with a rule people would know where they stood
