Watched this game and as it progressed (regressed) a little tune kept popping into my head:

'Deep inside there's something lacking
What they need's'a dash good whacking'

Don't mean that about the young ones - Sessegnon, Gil, Nile, Scarlett. But if you're CCV, Winks, Doherty? Alarm bells are ringing, Willies.

Romero clearly showed the rusty side of his game but expect much, much better and soon.

Yeah, because we've won so much in the last 20 years, that actually caring about a competition we can and should win, would be ridiculous. With all the glory we've had, this is so beneath us. Pfft!
There is no glory in winning this.

Only if you're that desperate to win virtually anything could you possibly want this thing. The level of opposition is so low there is no kudos to be gained.

I am. It is a trophy and one that we should target winning.

So is the the EFL Trophy.
We are in it again this year.
Should be go all out to win the Papa John’s Trophy or treat it with the respect it deserves as usual.

We're in a group with Cambridge, Oxford and Stevenage.

I can’t believe anyone is actually interested in this competition lol.

They aren't

1. Coefficient points. Keeping these high could be very beneficial when the coefficient places come into play in the CL in a couple of years time.
2. Europa League qualification. Quite likely that only 5th and 6th get Europa League from now on, winning this is another avenue in.

The logic makes sense from the perspective of a mere mortal. How does Ronaldo approach a game like this? And how should players getting a rare oppotunity to wear the shirt? This is Tottenham Hotspur, you don't get to pick and choose. Unacceptable.

But 4th place in England go directly into the CL groups now.
The thing coefficient points was good for was getting a handy draw in the play off round.

Since they brought they changed the seeding for the groups in 2015 coefficient has become way less important.

Pot 1 now contains the title holders and the champions of the top seven associations.
So this year Villareal, Lille, Sporting and Inter are in the Pot1. You would be happy to get any of them.

Before you were in trouble if you ended up in pot 3, now you can still get a nice draw.

Last year, a 4th seed and three 3rd seeds got through the groups.

Regardless even if we missed on europe for a year we will still have enough coefficient points in the bank to be second seeds as usual.

There is glory in winning this. One would think Spurs have won two trophies every year reading some posts. We have not won a trophy in 13 years. 13 years!! This is the maiden edition of this trophy.
Absolutely! And just as important, it gives almost as many coefficient points as the CL! We need those coefficient points, as they might be our only way into the CL!
How people fail to understand this, is beyond me.
Also, if we get to the final, those who have openly said they think this competition is beneath us, I don't expect ANYONE of you in the match thread, and I will keep an eye of who says they'll try to get tickets. But of course you won't do that, right? Because you're not interested!

Winning breeds winning

Absolute myth. Taken from hugely successful teams saying the first trophy was the hardest.
Their tales dominate the narrative. They are the pundits on TV talking about trophies.

There are plenty of sides that won one trophy and then nothing.

The last Spurs team to win a trophy then went on to win 2 point in 8 games a few months later.

The point with the coefficients is that there's a backdoor in to the CL by being the highest ranked team not to have qualified- 2 slots across europe iirc

It's not about seeding, it's about the new rule where the two teams with the highest coefficients who do not qualify for the CL through the league get a spot because of past performances in Europe, for example in the ECL.

The two clubs with most coefficient points, who fail to qualify for the CL through their domestic league, get free entry to the CL.
THAT'S THE POINT OF GETTING COEFFICIENT POINTS!

Don't get me wrong, I never want to lose but I would have just preferred to not be it as I think it will hamper our premier league season without any great benefits imo.

We are in it so we should do our best of course. Today's approach was the best to go about it. Run outs and experience for the younger lads even in a difficult match they will have learned as will have Nuno. Gotta the positives.

You can't win multiple things without winning the first one though - then you get a taste for it.
It's not a guarantee of course - but you can't win without winning
