Davinson Sanchez

I guess he thought it was a big game and Harry would get through it, knowing he didn't need him for the Zagreb game. Didnt pay off though, Harry was poor/not as fit as maybe he thought, who knows.
He could have bought him on for the last 30. Minutes!
I don’t get Mourinho I really don’t! After watching that game you think he would have been incandescent with rage!

Last 30 of thsi game?
tbe ball couldn’t stick up too with Kane
Without him it would have been worse

Gutted for Sanchez today. Thought he was tremendous and his "mistake" wasn't really a mistake. He had to make the challenge and it's very debatable if it was a penalty. Lloris is the most culpable for that goal in my view. Well, Lloris, the ref and the VAR official.

The last few weeks has been more like it for him. I'd have gladly never had him in the side again but he's turning a corner hopefully. Still a mistake in him but he's getting better and given our lack of options at CB, he's worth his place at the moment.

Thought JJ on match of the day 2 did a pretty good analysis of the incident. Lacazette did an air kick then kicked Sanchez on his follow through. Even Keown agreed it wasn't a penalty which was my first thought.

Taking off Kane when we need a goal, even if he's not playing that well, will very rarely be the right decision.

Kane showed why yesterday. He came very close to creating or scoring an equaliser.

Our lack of rotation in previous games though, that's up for debate.

But his mistake was that he put himself in the position to have to make a desperate challenge, due to poor positioning / awareness / reading of the game.

Let’s not blame Sanchez for not being in the perfect position because Lloris kicked it straight to their player....

Oh Lloris was absolutely at fault too for his poor kick. But I still think Sanchez should then be more than capable of defending what happens next. Here's the clip that shows Sanchez' reaction - do you honestly not think it shows poor awareness from him? He doesn't take any notice of Lacazette whatsoever until the pass is already on its way, and so has to lunge desperately to make the challenge (and is only able to do even that thanks to his pace). I'm not trying to dig the guy out - I like him and really want him to succeed. I'm just disagreeing with those who say that he didn't make a mistake for the goal.

I think you have to give credit to a brilliant pass there. That is a fantastic ball. I think that puts an attacker in on goal against almost anyone.

Sanchez actually recovers brilliantly and is perfectly placed to block Lacazette’s shot. I really can’t see how the ref can decide that is a penalty.

Funny how different people can watch the exact same clip and have different assessments! I agree it was a great ball, but I still think Sanchez is poor due to his total lack of awareness / positioning. I agree he recovers well thanks to his pace and effort. But he's certainly not perfectly placed to block the shot, otherwise he wouldn't have to be throwing himself through the air like that! And even then, he gets there late - you can see in the paused image below that even if Lacazette had connected properly, the ball would still have been gone by the time Sanchez got there:

Anyway seems we're not going to agree on Sanchez's play leading up to the pass, so happy to move on!

Sanchez was one of our better players yesterday and the penalty decision was a joke. Harsh those who are slagging him off again imo.

Am I right in thinking you’ve done a lot of coaching in your time parklane? If so I’m particularly interested in your view - what do you think of what Sanchez does in the video clip I posted above? (I.e. jogging forward and ignoring Lacazette until the pass is played). Standard for what any defender would / should do in that situation, or poor for lacking awareness of Lacazette? Seems the latter to me, but maybe I’m being harsh.

I thought Toby was worse today. Every time he got the ball he looked nervous and went backwards. I dont mind going back to the keeper every now and then but he was doing it without even looking up/in front of him today. Was driving me crazy. Normally he is quite progressive but today something was a bit off. Maybe PEH and N'Dombele weren't showing for it like normal I dont know.

The press was designed to precent him and Reggie getting any time.

Yes i have for most of my adult life, If i was being really critical i would say Sanchez could have been nearer but you could say the same about Doherty who could have come in more. As a coach i would have said maybe Sanchez could have cut the ball out if he had been quicker. The truth is you could point out mistakes for nearly every goal scored in a game, but as others have said it was a great ball and at the end of the day you have to accept it and move on. Sanchez has been playing well over the last few games, he is still only 24 and and most CB"s do not get to their best until later in age.

Is Sanchez not pushing up to stay in line with the rest of the defence? So when he sees the pass, he has to run the opposite way his momentum is taking him, Lacazette gets a head start on him, and he still gets back in time to attempt a block?
