Kyle Naughton ***official sold to Swansea***

Re: The Official Kyle Naughton Thead

Ok so IF Walker DID get injured on 1st September, who would YOU play at right-back then??

Right now you'd have to play Naughton there's no other option. Hopefully Poch will address this with an upgrade on him before the season starts.

Re: The Official Kyle Naughton Thead

It'll be Fredericks or a utility player like Richards

I'm sure Naughton wants first team football too. Swansea would be a good move.

Re: The Official Kyle Naughton Thead

Apparently Millwall have been told they can't have Fredericks on loan as he's going to be part of the first team squad at Spurs. That was "ITK" from someone on another forum whose mate who is a Millwall fan.

Re: The Official Kyle Naughton Thead

So far in pre season Naughton has looked a better RB than Walker. At least more comfortable on the ball.

I think so too . He seems to me to be a better student of the game than Walker and as you say , he seems far more comfortable on the ball , especially in those tight situations up against the sidelines where the full-backs are being instructed to position themselves by Poch.

The Davies/Naughton full-back pairing has seemed far more tidier and self-controlled than the Rose/Walker one. Walker has been injured that's true but his game at times, like Rose's, is impetuous and unpredictable, prone to brainfarts. IMO, Dawson looks far more assured playing alongside Naughton.

Swansea would be a good move for him if he wants to leave . I read that the Swans are also looking at the Goon Jenkinson too .

Re: The Official Kyle Naughton Thead

Naughton had a good preseason, I actually thought he was terrible for the first half of last season, but at some point he started improving slowly.

Walker I saw in person for the Toronto game, actually was good defensively, and played a couple of very interesting flat passes (that I've never seen him try), the issue seemed he was, as I mentioned in preseason thread, quite obviously playing within himself, seemed extra cautious and not the pacy/physical style he normally plays. I expect that will come back with game time.

In the interim Naughton seems a decent option, certainly more comfortably with Naughton at RB than I am with Rose at LB.

Re: The Official Kyle Naughton Thead

I think we'd be silly letting Naughton go, unless he's actively agitating for a move.

Look how the departure of BAE last summer ended up costing us. It's better to have a mediocre specialist than a square peg. I don't want to see Chiriches or Capoue at RB any time Walker is injured.

I'd let Rose go because I think Fryers is already much better than him. But we don't have a better #2 RB than Naughton. Plus he's homegrown and I'm sure on pretty low wages.

linked with rb Miguel Lopes on loan from Sporting

Re: The Official Kyle Naughton Thead

I actually don't think Naughton is all that bad to be honest. He has had dreadful games (Southampton at home, Liverpool at home), but on the whole he's fairly solid if not spectacular. As a backup option he's good. Problem is he played a lot of the season last year.

Re: The Official Kyle Naughton Thead

A club of our standing isnt going to have a better RB back up than Naughton - he's solid....

This is exactly it. We need to realise that if we're going to change players, and risk unsettling the squad, there needs to be a sufficient risk/reward. Here, there isn't.

We need 'game changers', not messing about with perfectly adequate back up right backs.

I'm sorry but this makes me angry, sad and laugh all at the same time. For one I completely disagree that he's sold. Secondly, a club of our 'stature' by which I take to mean 4th-7th needs a better back-up than Naughton.

Im sorry that my statement has bought out such emotions. But please tell me of all these quality RBs that are going to a club who only offer top wages to genuine star talent and dont compete in the CL and happily play second fiddle to Walker? Naughton is unspectacular but decent and intelligent on the ball, and I cant think of many wingers who have roasted him in a game. Sure he's made the odd mistake, but not unforgiveable considering he only plays when Walker is injured and not in a settled back 4.....

what other clubs between 4th-7th have better backup?

Re: The Official Kyle Naughton Thead

Walker's age, fitness, current level (arguably our player of the year last season) and potential mean being his back-up is a pretty dead end job. I don't think we'll find many players more suitable than Naughton.

Re: The Official Kyle Naughton Thead

Ignoring the question for a moment we should be aspiring to be better than 4-7th for a start. We shouldn't have this mentality that we accept a 'Kyle Naughton' because hemismthe best we can get. We should be looking to strengthen constantly. Would Naughton get in as covering RB at any of the presumed top 4 this coming season? No he wouldn't. Therefore, if we're aspiring to be up there with him we should be upgrading on him too.

Going back to your question you've got Serge Aurier who scum don't want now he's an option. Nathaniel Clyne from Southampton. I'm not a football scout so I'd hope they'd have a few more targets.

I don't agree he is decent and intelligent on he ball. He looks clumsy and hurried IMO. He's no Paolo Tramezzani I grant you but if we needed him to play week in week out I'd be worried that's all.

If he played week in week out he'd get better, but fair enough if you dont rate him thats up to you. I dont think wed be able to get better back up really but we shall see....

The 2 you have mentioned are not going to come here to play second fiddle, this is not football manager.
