Jan Vertonghen

He was disgraceful yesterday diving in rather than running back, my missus not known for his spotting of players, pointed to vertonghen and said he doesnt want to play today.
2hrs of my life sat in the geordies end getting stick when they realised early i was spurs...

Would not be massively disappointed if verts was made an example of, too many times he plays when it suits him. Class on his day but Wimmer showed over a sustained period that he isnt replaceable

For some reason Vertonghen is a virtual undroppable. Get rid for fecks sake. Third season in a row I'm saying that though.

Whole back four is shaky as hell. As soon as a cross comes in or someone makes a run from midfield we collapse. Everyone standing behind their man.
Ha-ha, classic knee-jerk if ever there was one.:p

Until yesterday's collapse they were still the best defensive four in the PL - and by some distance. Yesterday Rose was absent and three of the goals were conceded after we'd gone down to a just three at the back. On top of that their pen was as clear a dive as you'll ever see.

Diabolical defending for sure, but hardly typical of how we normally perform.

But thanks for the laugh anyway, just what I needed.

I feel Poch will start with Wimmer next season in most league games and Jan in the champs league. I like Jan but sometimes he gives the impression he be the last to climb over trenches when needed, but i'm glad we've found a quality replacement in Wimmer anyway.

I think Toby "forces" Jan to play well.

Toby seems more mate-y and passionate, they are Belgian team mates, probably know an enormous amount of people/past coaches etc in common and Toby seems the type to offer a clip around the ear to anyone he thinks isn't pulling their weight or is overly moody.
Whilst I partially agree... Toby was badly at fault again yesterday, just like previous weeks, his performances have dropped off hugely recently.

We usually don't concede many chances, but when we do they are huge. All you have to do is bypass our midfield.

Wouldn't disagree with that. Verthonghen and that ridiculously high line was horribly reminiscent of how we used to play under AVB post-Bale. Yes Verts does have that very dodgy side to his game but that was the first time we've seen it under Poch.

He was dodgy as hell at times last season too. Imo, keep him on a tight leash at the start of next season - one mistake, drop him for Wimmer and don't look back . It was harsh on Kevin to be dropped the way he was, but it's harsher still to be benched for Verts given his recent form. The two have to battle for that CB spot, and we need to give Verts another bit of a boost in competitiveness, which I feel he occasionally needs to play at his best.

There have been times, especially from set-pieces, where it appears he confuses the matter. Quality player but one whose psych needs tweaking IMO...

2 sides to his game I don't like. The first is the most serious- that he fails to dominate aerially. Secondly his petty gamesmanship. Going down like a girl feigning injury. It looks pathetic.I would rather he was properly schooled in the so called "dark arts."

The thing is we were the worst team at holding on to winning positions. Something is not quite right. Contrast this to 1-0 Leicester and you will see why they are champions and we are not. I still believe we should upgrade our defensive midfield options. For me that is a priority as well as a striker.

I think it is because this season we pretty much only played the game one way. In the last two games all we actually needed was 1 win (and even 1 draw would've ended up getting us over the line). At the Emirates early last season Pochettino set us up to play deep, invite the opposition on and play on the counter. I haven't really seen that from us this season, perhaps it is a tactic we need to look at again, either when leading a game late on, or perhaps on occasions from the start?

That's a very good point. However are we set up to sit back and let teams come onto us without conceding as Leicester can? I didn't post it on the match thread but I was thinking before the match about setting us up as 4-3-3 against Saudi Sportswashing Machine to give us more solidity in our defensive midfield position with dembele out.

We were linked to the Icelandic CB Siggurdsson yesterday in the Guardian. He looked good, of course it was only one game.
