I liked Erik Lamela before it was cool

At least he's back on the pitch, outside chance of being on the bench next week but he's been out so long that he won't be fully fit until the new year realistically.

He must actually be pretty physically fit by now. Just about getting the confidence to play his game at a high tempo which he needs.

Physically fit and match fit are very different things though, very few players can come back and the touch and feel of the ball is still there particularly after so long out. I would say that he at least looks like the type of person who looks after himself and hasn't come back overweight etc like many players do after a long injury.

The Argentine international, not seen in a Spurs shirt since a League Cup tie at Liverpool on October 25 last year, took another step on his road to recovery following hip problems with a good shift in a Premier League 2 London derby at Hotspur Way that saw both sides have spells in the ascendency before reaching a crescendo with two dramatic goals in stoppage time.

Martell Taylor-Crossdale's brace had the Blues 2-1 in front, Shayon Harrison having replied earlier, before goalkeeper Alfie Whiteman was adjudged to have fouled the rapid Luke McCormick, allowing Callum Hudson-Odoi to seemingly put the match out of reach with a penalty in the 92nd minute.

We came back, though, and Kazaiah Sterling's 94th-minute header meant it was game on for the last couple of moments, but sadly a last-gasp opening eluded us.

Lamela was replaced by Joe Pritchard on the hour mark in a planned change, with Christian Maghoma also introduced moments later to bolster our defence.

Erik Lamela impresses on comeback in new position alongside Marcus Edwards in Spurs U23s game vs Chelsea

The Argentine was finally back in a Tottenham shirt on Saturday

Midfielder Erik Lamela made his long-awaited return in a Tottenham Hotspur shirt and got an hour under his belt as the club's U23s took on Chelsea.

The 25-year-old Argentina international has spent more than a year out of the game with hip problems - his last game coming on October 25, 2016 in a League Cup match at Liverpool.

While the rest of the first team were losing 2-0 to Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium in the Premier League, Lamela was taking part in his first competitive action for almost 13 months, against the Blues in a Premier League 2 match.

The Argentine impressed in a more central role to normal. Under Pochettino Lamela often plays out wide and drifts inside, however for Wayne Burnett's U23s side he was employed in a more central attacking midfield role, dropping deep to help out in the middle of the pitch before popping up on the edge of the Chelsea box during attacks.

Erik Lamela returns to competitive action

It is a role that Lamela is not unfamiliar with, having played as a number 10 for former clubs Roma and River Plate on occasions. Playing in that position in the U23s match ensured he got plenty of touches of the ball to get him back into the feel of a competitive encounter.

He had highly-rated academy youngster Marcus Edwards to his right, cutting inside frequently.

Edwards had a curling free-kick well saved by Chelsea goalkeeper Jamie Cumming before Lamela tested the young Blues stopper with a powerful effort from distance.

Lamela then played through Shilow Tracey, but his effort was blocked by a lunging tackle.

In the second half, Taylor-Crossdale headed home on 53 minutes to put the visitors back into the lead.

Lamela was taken off on the hour mark in a pre-planned change and Chelsea doubled their advantage in added time at the end of the game when Callum Hudson-Odoi converted a penalty. There was still time for Kazaiah Sterling to head home a goal for Spurs, but it was too little, too late.

Nice to see him having a good match after being out injured for more than 1 year. We have badly missed him against the big teams like Chelsea, ManU and Arsenal. Let's hope he will come back soon for the senior team as well.

Will definitely help with our pressing which seems to have disappeared of late, can also free Alli to play a little deeper as well.

Whoa! Doubt the likes of Kane, Dele, Winks and Son will be too happy reading that. They run their fudging socks off chasing lost causes up top every game. And if you watched the BVB game you surely cannot have failed to notice the number of times opponents were harried off the ball in the middle of the park after being surrounded and hounded by two or three in white shirts? It's one big reason why we managed to turn the tide back in our favour.

Saying that, I'll readily acknowledge that Lamela as the arch presser so no doubt he would give the whole side a boost on that front.

Like signing a 30m + player and the rest of it. He will adapt to the system and formation .... would not be surprised to see him initially rotated for Sissoko.

Change of formation to accommodate?

Always looks hungry for the ball and gets involved .... one of my favourite player's.... got some real cojones to convince the media, rival fans, our own fans that he is one heck of a payer.

No chance. Will be good to have him back but let’s not overstate his importance to us. Poch would be a fool to change the formation to accommodate Lamela. He’s needs to show he can fit into the formations Poch employs. Alli, Son and Eriksen are all far more important than Lamela.
